Capt. M. E. Burnton Dies of Stroke at 82
Veteran of War with Spain Overcome While Saluting the Colors on Memorial Day.
Captain Maurice E. Burnton, 82-year-old veteran of the war with Spain, died yesterday morning in the Knickerbocker Hospital of a cerebral hemorrhage which overcame him on Memorial Day while he was saluting the colors of his old regiment, the Twenty-second Infantry, N.Y.N.G., now the 102d Engineers. He was standing in the doorway of a drug store at Ninety-second Street and Broadway, the rain having prevented his occupying his usual seat in the reviewing stand. He never regained consciousness.
Captain Burnton, who lived in Butler Hall, 80 Morningside Drive, with his wife, Ellen Mark {sic} Vantine Burnton, served in the Twenty-second Regiment from 1872 until his retirement in 1914 as a Captain. A crack shot, he won the State rifle and pistol championships several times.
Until 1923 he was the proprietor of a stationery store at Broadway and Tenth Street which had been owned by his family for more than a hundred years. He was a member of the Old Guard of the City of New York and one of the founders of the New York Athletic Club.• Funeral Notice, New York Times (New York, New York), 7 Jun 1933 - , New York City, New York, New York
7 Jun 1933
Service Held for Captain Burnton.
Funeral services for Captain Maurice E. Burnton were held at the armory of the 102d Engineers last evening. The Rev. Dr. A. E. Ribourg, assisted by the Rev. Dr. G. A. Carstensen, chaplain of the veterans' organization, officiated. The regimental flag of that he saluted on Memorial Day, just before he died, was displayed.

Biog./Hist. Note Dunmore' War was a conflict between the Colony of Virginia and the Native Americans of the Ohio Valley. Following increased raids and attacks on frontiersmen in this region, the Royal Governor of Virginia, Lord Dunmore, organized a large force of militia and marched to Fort Pitt arriving at the end of August 1774. Dunmore also ordered Colonel Andrew Lewis, commander ofthe southwestern Virginia militia, to raise an army in the south and meet Dunmore's force along the Ohio River. Lewis formed militia companies from Augusta, Bedford, Botetourt, Culpeper, Dunmore, Fincastle, and Kentucky counties. After Colonel Lewis' victory at the Battle of Point Pleasant, Dunmore successfully negotiated a peace treaty with the Delaware, Mingo, and Shawnee chiefs that prevented them from settling or hunting south of the Ohio River.
Related Work Part of the index to the names of Virginia citizens or soldiers from the counties of Augusta, Bedford, Botetourt, Culpeper, and Fincastle who were compensatedin 1775 for supplies and service during Dunmore's Expedition in 1774. This index covers individuals from the counties of Augusta, Bedford, Botetourt, and Fincastle only. These records are now part of the Virginia Colonial Government records group (RG#1) and are housed in the Archives at the Library of Virginia.

BUTLER CEMETERY, Bracken County, Ky.
This cemetery was recorded in the summer of 1998. To our knowledge the cemetery has never been recorded before. The cemetery is in poor condition. It is overgrown with weeds & trees and easy to miss when you are driving down the road, even though it is just off the road. There are only a few stones in this small cemetery In addition to the stone we found, we also found 12 fieldstones.
