General Notes (Husband)
Buried in the Bethel Cemetery, Sanger, Fresno Co., CA.
Served in the CSA as a private (named William T. Richey, sic) in Captain
Perry Clayton's Company, 30-Day Volunteers. This company was raised in
response to Colonel Borland's call of November 5, 1861, mustered into the
Confederate service on November 9, 1861, for 30 days, and discharged on
December 9, 1861, at Pitman's Ferry, Arkansas. This information obtained
from Bryan R. Howerton, found at
ww.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/clayton.html. Also on this roster were
Isaac W. Armstrong, First Lieutenant; Richard DeKalb Armstrong; Thomas J.
Turner; and Robert G. Richey (sic).
Tommy Ritchie next enlisted as a private on 1 November 1862 at Evening
Shade, Arkansas in Co. D of the 8th Arkansas Cavalry (listed as "W.T.
Richey"). At the time of enlistment his age was 37 and states he had
been born in Virginia. He was detailed as butcher in this company on 1
Jul 1863. He was paroled 5 Jun 1865 at Jacksonport, Arkansas. Also in
the 8th Arkansas Cavalry were David Mastin Armstrong (future son-in-law);
John G. Gibbins (future son-in-law to his brother Isaac Ritchie); David's
father Richard Dickson and brother Isaac Huntley Armstrong; and Thomas
Joseph Turner (future father-in-law to Tommy's future granddaughter Sarah
Lee Armstrong).
William Thomas "Tommy" Ritchie is my great-great-grandfather. He moved to
Stoneburg in Montague County, Texas as part of a wave of Sharp County
immigrants during the 1870s and 1880s to Texas, including the Ritchies,
Turners, Sandefers, Levertons, Armstrongs, and Padens (who all were or
became interrelated by marriage). The Padens went to Denton ca. 1870,
which is about an hour's modern-day drive from Stoneburg. The Ritchies
went first to Grapevine, in Tarrant County, Texas, also about an hour's
drive from Stoneburg. They were part of a wagon train, and included in
that number was David Mastin Armstrong, a heartbroken young man who was
recently released from having been a Confederate soldier captive in a
Union prison. His father (Richard Dickson Armstrong from Sharp Co.) died
in that Union army prison right at the end of the war. David left his
family behind to go for cheap land and, more importantly, removal from
all signs of the war in what was then the frontier of Texas. On the long
ride from Sharp County to Texas, David struck up a relationship with
Tommy Ritchie's young teenage daughter, Margaret, that led quickly to
marriage in 1874. They both often told the story of how they fell in love
during this wagon train journey.
Margaret Ritchie is an iconic figure in our family. Despite being a shade
under 5' tall, with kind blue eyes, she was made of steel and is likely
the reason me and my generation are here today. The Ritchies and
Armstrongs stayed in Tarrant County only a few years. They heard of free
land, lots of it, available to settlers in the Crosstimbers region of
Texas, which was then and still is wonderful cattle and farming land
(blackland prairie). Texas had been depopulated during the Civil War,
particularly in the counties that were the border between older white
settlements and the regions claimed for millenia by Comanche, Kiowa and
Apache. Montague County (Stoneburg) was such a border zone, and had lost
much of its white settlement during the Civil War because there was no
around to prevent Comanche raids. Texas was offering free or extremely
cheap land in Montague County, the proceeds of which would go to fund
schools in Limestone County, Texas -- hence, it was known at Limestone
County School Land. Tommy Ritchie and David Armstrong moved their
families to homesteads just east of Stoneburg, David by 1880, Tommy a few
years later. David, having virtually nothing in the way of start-up
money, built a "soddie" or sod house in the side of a small hill for
himself, Margaret, and their young daughter Sarah Lee. Tommy and Joanah
Ritchie were able to afford a house. But they all did well economically,
surviving the difficulties of new settlement. David was able to buy a
stud horse and earn extra income from this endeavor. They all farmed
cotton, in addition to raising most of their own food and farm stock.
Stoneburg grew enormously between 1880 and 1915, and reached the height
of its population during this time. This is when the Turners, Levertons,
and Sandefers joined their Sharp County friends and relatives in the area.
David and Margaret Armstrong donated a hilltop section of their land for
the only cemetery in particular area, known as Oak Hill. This is my
family cemetery and is still in active use for the residents of Stoneburg
-- it is where I've asked to be buried when I die. David and Margaret
used this cemetery right away to bury a pair of male twins who died right
after birth and were never named. Their small, blank double headstone is
something I remember vividly as a child. David and Margaret had no more
children. Tragically, David became one of the next burials in Oak Hill.
He had contracted tuberculosis from nursing his father in the Union
prison camp. No doubt the rigors of breaking new land and living in a sod
house did nothing to hold this terrible disease at bay. The family had
moved into a cabin before his death in March of 1894. A few months after
his death, his daughter Sarah Lee married Samuel Mordecai Turner, and
they moved into the cabin with widowed Margaret, building a second room
across an outdoor breezeway to create a dog-run cabin. This cabin, and
the soddie, are no longer standing, but when I was a teenager in
Stoneburg I often hiked across the fields to the old homestead, where
there was a hollow still marking where the sod house had stood.
As Sam and Sarah Lee Turner started their family, Margaret remained with
them for a while. Eventually she remarried to an elderly widower named
William Hardin Dowdy. The terms of this marriage were very clear: Captain
Dowdy, as he was known, would have his house kept, his meals prepared,
and his old age years tended to by Margaret, and she in turn would have
the security of marriage. They were affectionate, but this was an
economic pairing, not one based on passion. (The love of Margaret's life
had been David Armstrong.) At least in the presence of others, Margaret
referred to her second husband exclusively as "Mr. Dowdy". They had a
peaceful, contented domestic existence. His grown children, who were
close to Margaret in age, were grateful for her presence and remained
close to her the rest of her lilfe. They moved into Stoneburg proper and
bought a mail order house from Sears Roebuck, which was shipped in pieces
by the railroad and assembled by local carpenters. This house held a
pride of place in Stoneburg, with its elaborate gingerbread and wide
front porch framed by lilac bushes. The land on which it stood remained
in the family until just a few years ago. I lived there as a teenager.
But in 1902, tragedy returned. Sarah Lee came down with the same
tuberculosis that had killed her father and grandfather. As she began her
decline, in February 1902 their seven-year-old son Roy V. Turner died, of
causes not currently known. In March, Sarah Lee died. Sam was devastated,
and never quite recovered. He died in July 1903. All three of them are
buried next to David Armstrong and the twins in Oak Hill. The two Turner
girls, Hettie and Effie Lee, went to live in Stoneburg with their
grandmother Margaret and stepgrandfather William Dowdy.
Here's a correcting note: Although Margaret Ritchie accumulated many
names in her lifetime, dying as Margaret Semmerine Ritchie Armstrong
Dowdy, she NEVER was known as Susan. I've seen this name attributed to
her in genealogical records done by others, and she would frankly be
horrified at the idea of being called Susan. Please correct this in any
records; I don't know where it came from, but not from anyone who knew
her. By people who were very close to her, she was sometimes called Sem,
short for her middle name of Semmerine, which is in fact a corrupted
spelling of Cimarron. But no Susan. While I'm correcting names, Joanah
Carter Ritchie's middle initial was G., not C. We think, but cannot yet
document, that this stood for Green, a family name. Her father was
Littleberry (all one word) Carter, and this is why she named her youngest
son Berry. Joanah usually spelled her name with an H at the end, instead
of Joanna. Her only sibling, Elizabeth Zilpha Carter, married Alexander
Wiles and thus Joanah was related to the Wiles of Sharp County. Their
mother was Nancy/Agnes Moore (Nancy is a common Scots nickname for Agnes,
and both names appear in various records), daughter of George Moore and
Elizabeth Moody of Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Littleberry Carter was
also born in Mecklenburg County, VA to Charles T. Carter, a Revolutionary
War veteran, but by 1822 had moved his young family to Maury Co., TN,
which is where the Carter-Ritchie connection first began.
Tommy and Joanah Ritchie remained in Stoneburg, although their daughter
Everlina Alice and her husband Robert Paden moved from Denton, Texas out
to California ca. 1890, settling in Sanger, Fresno County, where some of
their descendants remain. The youngest Ritchie, Berry, married Rokey
(pronounced Rocky -- on her birth record it is Roxie Ann, but it was
never pronounced Roxie) West and began having an extremely large family.
It was an open secret in Montague County while I lived there that Berry
Ritchie was something of a ladies' man and had several children besides
those he fathered with long-suffering Aunt Rokey. The Berry Ritchies
moved a few mile northeast, to the Belcherville, Texas area. Several of
their descendants live in Nocona, Texas. Tommy and Joanah Ritchie's
second daughter, Sarah "Sallie" Minerva, married George Porter Chilton
and lived in Bowie, Texas, ten miles away from Stoneburg.
When Joanah Ritchie died in December 1904, Tommy's children vied for the
honor of having him come to live with each of them. He was a beloved man,
merry, easygoing, hard-working, a good storyteller. He and Joanah had
been very close, and his heart was broken when he lost her. Eventually,
he opted to move out to California to live with the Padens. He died there
less than a year after Joanah's death and is buried in the Sanger
Cemetery.
Margaret Ritchie Armstrong Dowdy stayed on in Stoneburg, raising her
granddaughters as if they were her own daughters. (They grew up calling
her "Mama".) When Captain Dowdy died in 1916, she struggled on without
his income. She sent her girls to school a year before it was fashionable
for girls to attend school in Stoneburg, making sure they both got
excellent educations. Hettie Turner went on to Texas Normal School (as it
was known then -- now it is North Texas University, my alma mater) and
got her certification as a teacher. Lee Turner obtained her Master's from
Hardin-Simmons, taught English at the Unviersity of Texas and also in
Bryan, Texas, where her husband was a prominent early professor of
history at Texas A&M. It is through Lee Turner Duncan, who got it
firsthand from Margaret Ritchie and the journals of David Armstrong, that
we have our rich and well-documented family history.
Hettie Alberta Turner married William Rusk Atkins, a Stoneburg man who
also came from a family of readers and strong wills. They had three
children, one of them my mother Mary Jo, before Hettie died from
tuberculosis, the family scourge. (Lee Turner also had TB as a child but
recovered.) When Hettie became ill, she and Bill moved their family in
with Margaret Ritchie Armstrong Dowdy, who nursed Hettie in her last
days. Hettie died in 1928 and is buried at Oak Hill. Bill and the two
oldest children remained with Margaret, who was now raising her THIRD
generation of descendants, who called her Granny. Mary Jo, an infant, was
given to her aunt and uncle Zura and Auther Atkins to be nursed, and
remained living with them all her life. Bill Atkins became progressively
ill from having been mustard-gassed in World War I, and eventually had to
go to the V.A. Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where he died in 1933.
By this time, Margaret Ritchie Armstrong Dowdy, or "Granny Dowdy" as she
had become known in the community, was 75 years old. With tremendous
reluctance, she admitted she was no longer up to raising the two Atkins
children, Sarah Margaret and William Rusk II, on her own. Lee Turner
Duncan, who had two children of her own, immediately offered to take
them, along with Mary Jo. But the weather was ferociously bad that year,
and every time she and her husband John Thomas Duncan made arrangements
to drive up to North Texas to bring the children back home, literally
bridges and roads were washed out. In the kind of weird twist of fate
that seems too outlandlish to be true, by the time the roads were
passable, the Atkins children had been claimed by their Atkins aunts and
uncles, separated into three families. Despite a custody effort by Lee
Duncan, the children remained split up. Mary Jo Atkins landed in a good
home. Sarah and Bill Atkins were not so lucky in where they were adopted.
Until her death in 2001, Lee Duncan never stopped regretting having lost
the chance to raise the Atkins children and sidestep the hardship the
elder two endured in their new homes, orphaned during the Depression. Lee
functioned as a surrogate parent and grandparent to her nieces and nephew
and their children the rest of her long and successful life.
Granny Dowdy (Margaret Ritchie) sold the wonderful house in Stoneburg,
where the Atkins children had been born, to someone who moved it to
Bowie, Texas. She went to live with Lee Duncan and her family, who were
struggling to survive as teachers in Depression-era Texas. She died
peacefully while living with them in 1939, in Estelline, Hogg Co., TX.
Somehow they found the money to carry her back to Montague County, where
she is buried next to David and her mother Joanah in Oak Hill Cemetery.
I and my Aunt Sarah Margaret Atkins were named for Margaret Ritchie. She
was quiet, confident, generous, honest, and persevering. We grew up on
stories about her. The one I remember best concerns her great love of
cats. She had an assortment of barn cats living behind the Stoneburg
house. She wanted to keep a constant number in their population;
however, as cats will, they regularly produced litters of kittens.
Margaret had no means of having them spayed -- this was long such things
were available -- and she knew that allowing the kittens to survive would
mean only slow starvation for them, as there was not enough mice to feed
them all and she certainly could not afford to care for them. So, when
she noticed a female cat showing up for the evening bowl of milk she set
out with a suspiciously bulging middle, she kept careful watch of that
cat. When the new mother showed up suddenly thin and obviously nursing,
Margaret fed her along with the rest and then followed her back to
wherever the litter had been hidden. The mother trusted her, as all cats
trusted Margaret. She would admire the kittens and praise them
extravagantly to the proud new mother. Slowly she gathered all the
kittens into her apron, then, just as slowly, made her way out of the
barn, shutting the mother cat in at the last minute. She walked around
the corner of the barn and one by one, pulled the tiny kittens out of her
apron and knocked their heads sharply against the corner of the barn,
killing them instantly. Then she buried them where the mother would not
smell them. In this way, she kept her cat population healthy but not
growing. The point of this story, however, was that during the entire
process of this nasty but necessary chore, Margaret would be weeping
uncontrollably, absolutely anguished over having to kill these beloved
kittens. It was considered extremely odd by her farmer neighbors, for
someone to cry over the death of an animal. But Margaret never hardened
to it, and she never hid her grief.
I find the group migration of so many families from one county in
Arkansas to Montague County a fascinating question. I think the main
answer lies with the Civil War. Texas, while part of the South and a
prominent player in the war, managed to keep the war outside its own
borders and thus was "untainted" soil. It was also considered to be
freer than other parts of the South from the economic devastation of the
war and of Reconstruction. For this reason, it was a popular destination
for families who had suffered through the war in other parts of the
South. A second reason for this particular cluster is that most of the
men in these families -- the Armstrongs, Tommy Ritchie and his brother
Robert Gilliam Ritchie, the Levertons, Thomas Joseph Turner, and some of
the Sandefers -- not only all served in the CSA from Sharp County, but
actually enlisted together at the same time in the same company. I
believe this forged lifelong bonds among them, that encouraged migrating
to the same place.
As I have it, the migrations of the Ritchie/Carter connections are:
Robert Thomas Ritchie, b. ca. 1795, Lunenburg Co., Va
m. Jane Murphey 1817 Pittsylvania Co., VA
moved by 1832 to Maury Co., TN
moved by 1840s to Marshall Co., TN
moved by 1858 to Lawrence/Sharp Co., AR
died 1879, Ash Flat, Sharp Co., AR
His son William Thomas Ritchie, b. 18 July 1827, Pittsylviania Co., VA
moved by 1832 to Maury Co., TN (likely met Joanah G. Carter there)
moved by 1840s to Marshall Co., TN
married Joanah G. Carter 25 July 1848, Marshall Co., TN
moved by 1858 to Sharp Co., AR
moved by 1874 to Tarrant Co., TX
moved by 1894 to Stoneburg, Montague Co., TX
Joanah Carter Ritchie died 28 December 1904, Stoneburg, Montague Co., TX
moved by 1905 to Sanger, Fresno Co., CA
died 20 November 1905, Sanger, Fresno Co., CA
1900 Census, Montague Co., TX, ED 52, Just. Pct. 4, p 26-A -- working as
a landlord. Owned home, no mortgage. Living next door to son Berry and
his family.

Ms. Yocom - I just saw our gedcom which included Bessie McArdle.
My husband's grandfather was Collins T. McArdle, Bessie's brother -- Bessie
was one of 14 children born to Collins & Nancy (Stevens) McArdle who moved
from Vermilion Co, IL to Leavenworth Co, KS ca 1866.
Beth Boydston is Bessie's granddaughter via her second marriage to George
Cassody - in Oklahoma. The family moved to Garfield Co, OK sometime after
1895 where they still live. Kenneth & Stella & their half-brother, Joe, are
all buried there; Joe's widow lives in Enid, & is remarried. Beth (Joe's
dau) lives in OK as well.
If there is anything you might want or could share re: the McArdle family -
I'm more than happy to cooperate. I have all sorts of goodies about the
family up to and including information that Bessie's grandmother was Nancy
Morgan McArdle, great-granddaughter of Morgan Morgan, the first white
settler west of the Potomac in Virginia - a judge, a COL in the Virginia
militia, a member of the House of Burgess, and many many other FIRSTs. Her
grandfather was Zackquill Morgan, founder & proprietor of Morgantown, WV --
and so it goes.
Let me know -- Karin McArdle

Dear Carol,
I recently received information that an ancestor of my sister-in-law's may be a member of the Vantine family and it seems you are the go-to person for information on the Fonteyn/Vantine families of New York and New Jersey, though I haven't found any reference to this particular woman on your website or the various message boards you contribute to.
According to a researcher in the Castle family (who can't remember where she got this information as it's been in her files over 30 years now) my sister-in-law Shelley's 4th great grandfather Seth Castle of Morristown, St. Lawrence County, NY, was born in Grand Isle, Vermont abt. 1789 and married Catherine Vantine of Chazy, NY, b about 1800. They would have married about 1820. Seth and Catherine are found in the censuses in Morristown from then on and Catherine died in Morristown in 1881. The researcher also had information that Catherine's parents were John and Elizabeth Vantine.
AAs Grand Isle is just across Lake Champlain from Chazy, and neither of them is that far from St. Lawrence County, this seems a plausible connection but there is nothing else found so far to back it up. Do you have any information on this couple or on a John and Elizabeth Vantine in Chazy? Thanks for any help you can give - the stuff you already have online is marvelous! Hope to hear from you soon. Len,
This is a great puzzle! The short answer is I don't know who this is.
The long answer is this:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cyocom/iashley.htm
Ashley Abram Vantine is the most distinguished descendant of Abraham and Jane (Merrihew) Vantine of Chazy, New York. They and their descendants moved between Grand Isle and Chazy several times. Additionally, Abraham settled in Canada for several years. There is no proof of Abraham's paternal ancestry beyond that indicated in the "Set 2" of family papers.
According to the Stratton book on South Hero Island, p. 41, 10 March
1789, a Freeman's Oath was taken by James Vantine. This is the only
mention of James Vantine. I don't know who he is or what became of him.
In 1763, according to the

***Willm Vantine****
We have Willm Vantine signing the Charter for land in Berlin, Vermont. There is no indication that he ever moved north from Fishkill and, in 1787, he was noted as delinquent in his taxes.
In 1789-90, there was no Vantine listed on the census for either Clinton county, New York, or Chittenden (Grand Isle), Vermont, but there is an Abraham Ventine listed in South Hero, Chittenden county, Vermont, with a William Venton listed in Mohawk, Montgomery, New York. There is no John Vantine/Vandine/Valentine/Vanline/ Vantien/Fontine/Fantine/and other variations in South Hero or Chazy.
TThere is an interesting possibility with the following John Vantine:
Data: Members First Reformed Dutch Church, New Brunswick, New Jersey
1781-1797
Johannes Vanteyn May 27, 1757
Maria LaFever wife of Johannes Vanteyn May 27, 1757
Data: "Members List 1766: Maria LaFever h.v.v. Johs Vanteyn." "Records of the Reformed Dutch Church of City of New York." NYGBS Record, 1930, volume 61, p 270.
Data: Mary, wife of John Van Tine has eloped from her husband. NY Gazette-Mercury, 1 Aug 1768.
Data: From Doherty's Beekman Patents Vol F Johannes Fountain, widower of Maria LeFevre, residing in Nistigione, married Maria McMicken, widow of Ebenezer McMicken, living in Schenectady. They married at SchenRCh. 20 Feb. 1785. Ebenezer Mc Mikle (sic) was listed on the 1779 tax roll for Schenectady, Albany Co., NY with no real property and personal property worth £20. He paid a tax of £2/8/4. John Vantine was not on the list and was not in the NYS 1790 census under any of the usual spellings.
What became of John married to Maria LaFever and Maria McMicken, I don't know. Neither wife was named Elizabeth. This is the northernmost John Vantine I know of in your time frame.
Abraham and Jane (Merrihew) Vantine DID have a daughter Catharine whose marriage and fate is unknown. I have her born about 1798 (History of Franklin and Grand Isle Counties 974.31/H2a). If it were not for the information about John/Elizabeth, I would probably feel this is your Catharine.
On the 1880 census, Catharin(e) Castle is listed in District 237, Brier Hill, St. Lawrence, New York, living with the U. A. Strough family. She is listed as Mother [in-law]. She's 81 years old and widowed. She was born in Vermont, her father was born in Vermont, and her mother was born in Massachusetts. This is a good piece of information. Abraham Vantine was born in New York and Jane Merrihew was born in Massachusetts!
On the 1870 census, Catherine Castle is living in Morristown with Seth. Uriah Strough is her son-in-law.
There is another researcher who very firmly believes that this family was of German descent from a Ben/Benjamin Vantien but her speculation on this point is remarkably free of factual data.
What to do, what to do!
There is a 1798 taxation census as I recall from years ago which covered this area. I believe I looked at it for Abraham and Jane. I can't recall the name of it or find it in the Family History Library catalog at the moment. All I can remember, for some reason, is that a bridge keeper used the pages for years to start the fire in his office.
There is no probate for Vantine in St. Lawrence records, but perhaps there is for Castle.
I notice that you have a death date of 1881 for Catharine. It's a remote stretch, but have you ordered a death certificate for her from New York State? That was just the beginning of State death certs and the likelihood of her certificate existing is very small but shouldn't be overlooked.
There is a small possibility of locating an obituary for her (again small).
New York took State Censuses in 1855, 1865, and 1875. I don't know if these are extant for St. Lawrence, but I would certainly look at them if they are. They give very detailed information.
Last, I vaguely remember something about a Castle family. You realize that I've been researching for over 30 years and I'm at the point where I forget half of what I ever knew. Still, if I let it float around in my subconscious, sometimes it will pop to the surface. I'll let you know if it does.

Hi Carol,
It was great to hear from you. THANK YOU for your detailed and thoughtful response. I'm afraid I just don't know very much about this family at all yet as I only received the information on Catherine Castle being a member of the Vantine family a few days ago, as I said, from another Castle researcher. Her ancestor Charlotte Catherine Castle married Isaac Bush in Morristown; Charlotte was the daughter of a Hiram and Casendana (Sprague) Castle of Westford, VT but so far Kae is unable to fit Seth Castle into her Castle family at all. What a familiar scenario, eh? though it seems there MUST be some connection. Kae thinks she got the information on Seth and Catherine after writing to St. Lawrence County though whether this was to a library, historical society, county clerk? she just doesn't know. She does have an exact date of death for Catherine, May 18, 1881, which suggests either a death record or a gravestone or cemetery record but I haven't written ANYWHERE (except to you) yet.
AAs to whether Catherine's parents were really John and Elizabeth - the fact you can't find a couple that fits this description anywhere in the records, as well as the fact that Abraham and Jane Vantine had a daughter Catherine the right age, makes me mighty suspicious that the John and Elizabeth information is wrong. Interestingly, though it isn't proof, at least a couple of men in Seth and Catherine's family were storekeepers just as Catherine's POSSIBLE brother Ashley Abraham Vantine was. My sister-in-law's family still has the bible of her gg-grandmother Saloma Coats Warner, granddaughter of Seth and Catherine, and an obituary for Uriah Strough tucked into the pages mentions his several failed attempts at storekeeping in New York, Wisconsin and Illinois. A letter from Lucy Ann Castle Coats, Saloma's mother, is also tucked in there and mentions "Den's" store - this a reference probably either to her brother-in-law or son, both of them named Dennison Coats. It may be evidence that this line of work ran in the family.
II still have to digest everything you have sent and do some more investigating but it does look to me right now like Abraham and Jane Vantine of Chazy are the likeliest candidates for Catherine's parents. Did I read somewhere in your online stuff that the name Saphronia is found in that family? Seth and Catherine had a daughter Sophronia Sarah (or Sarah Sophronia), wife of Uriah Strough.
MMan, I'm still trying to keep everything straight! I'll certainly write again. Thanks so much again, Carol, for all the information you've sent so far, I really appreciate it! Talk to you soon, I hope. Len
