General Notes for Child Jane Mendenhall
Notes in Dr. Potter's collection. William H. McCormick gives this description of his mother, Jane Mendenhall McCormick. "She was of slender build, above the average in height, and weighed about 120 to 130 pounds -- dark hair and eyes, and a little nervous, self-willed, enjoyed good health until past 50 years of age. After the Civil War broke out Charles, the 3rd child, died of the measels. Mother took the measels and left her with a cough from which she never fully recovered. But she held on to life until she was near 70 years of age. She was a woman of great endurance and never knew what it was to take a rest. . . . The care of the family depended on her. Her husband was an itinerant minister and often away from home for weeks at a time." [This may have been taken from "Jesse A. Duncan of Decatur, Illinois, prepared a history of the descendants of Elizabeth Mendenhall and Samuel a Hufferd." ]

Noted events in her life were:

Press Democrat, The (Santa Rosa, CA) - October 7, 2004
Deceased Name: CAROLYN VANTINE
Whether she was serving as president of the Assistance League of Sonoma County or performing duties as an officer of the Children's Home Society of California or being an activist for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Carolyn Vantine was an outgoing, positive, upbeat woman who loved her family and her community.
She died Sunday in Santa Rosa of heart failure. She was 64.
''She was always upbeat,'' said her husband of 35 years, James Vantine of Windsor. ''She made friends very readily. I met her at a meeting of Parents Without Partners, and she was really a standout in the group.''
Born Carolyn Jane Cook on July 27, 1940, in Los Banos, she lived in Sonoma County 28 years. She was the daughter of Doris Beaver Cook, after whose family Beaver Street in Santa Rosa was named.
She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed entertaining guests in her home. She was known as an accomplished extemporaneous public speaker.
She also enjoyed travel, visiting 74 countries and taking 40 cruises with her husband.
''A close-knit family was very important to her,'' said her son, Terry Vantine of Windsor. ''She was a gem of a person.''
In addition to her husband and son, she is survived by four other sons, Gregory Zellmer of Grass Lake, Mich.; Richard Vantine and William Vantine, both of Sacramento; and Steven Vantine of Windsor; a brother, Walter Cook of Sacramento; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Santa Rosa Memorial Park and Mortuary, 1900 Franklin Ave., Santa Rosa. Services are at 1 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 1551 Montgomery Drive, Santa Rosa. Interment will be private.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Children's Home Society of California, 180 Grand Ave., Suite 1030, Oakland 94612, or to the Assistance League of Sonoma County, 5 W. Sixth St., Santa Rosa 95401
