Note: This album emphasizes the siblings of Thomas W. Russell and their descendants- in other words, the collateral families of my direct line. For Thomas W. Russell, go to his album.

I. First Generation Russell Family

St Bartholomew, Thornley Fig. R-1. St Bartholomew Anglican Church, Thornley, Durham Co, England. Thomas Russell, the elder, was entered into the burial record of Thornley parish- buried 6 Nov 1880, age 56. Thomas married first to Jane McNelley and they had 10 children; and second to Jane McCallum, they had one child. There are, however, discrepancies.
6 siblings of Thomas Russell, the elder Figure R-2. Six of the 11 offspring of Thomas Russell, the elder: Bottom row, from left: Thomas W. Russell, the younger (my great- grandfather), Alma Emma, and David; back row: James Frederick, Robert and John Girabaldi. Photo taken at Kruger Studios, Houtzdale, PA, ca. late 1880's. Offspring not pictured: William, Mary, Jane, Janet, and Sarah Rebecca. The mother of all these offspring, including those not pictured, was Jane McNelley (or McNally), except for James Frederick Russell whose mother was Jane McCallum. The parentage of David Russell is yet to be documented.
Jane McCallum Figure R-3. Jane McCallum, b. 1827- died after 1881, the SECOND wife of Thomas Russell, the elder. She was the mother of Thomas' youngest son, James Frederick Russell. Photo taken probably before 1881 in England.

John Girabaldi Russell Fig. R-4. John Girabaldi Russell (1860-1914). John was a composer and pianist. Reportedly, he performed at the Onandaga Country Club. However, I have a letter written in 1911, by John on stationary with "Century Club of Syracuse" on the letter head. John never married.
Close up of Emma Russell Fig. R-5. Alma Emma Russell (1866-1951). Family tradition indicates that Emma had red hair. She married recent Scottish immigrant, Alexander D. Forsyth, in Houtzdale, Clearfield Co, PA. They moved from Houtzdale to Syracuse, NY, about 1910. Go to family photo.
James F Russell and Mary Ellen Fig R-6. James Frederick Russell (1869-1957), Mary Ellen Hughes (1893-1945), and son, James Owen Russell (1894-1963). Photo taken at Kruger Studios, Houtzdale, PA, about 1895. Three other children were born to this couple: Sarah Rebecca "Sadie", Elizabeth, and James Frederick Russell, Jr. The family moved from Houtzdale, PA, to Sryacuse, NY, about 1910.

Robert Russell and family Fig R-7. Robert Russell (1849-1940), his wife, Jane Ann Burt (1854-1905), and their 3 children: Mary Ann, Garfield, and Andrew. The couple had no more issue. Photo taken mid 1880's in Houtzdale, PA. Image was scanned from a photocopy of original.
Forsyth family Fig. R-8. Emma Russell and Alexander D. Forsyth and their 8 children. Taken about 1910, as judged from estimated age of youngest boy who was born 1906. Photo may have been taken just before family moved to Syracuse, NY, from Houtzdale, PA. Tentatively, from back row, left- Russell, Thomas, Elizabeth, Robert, and Clellan; (front)- Alexander, Jr, Alexander (father), William, Emma (mother), and Lincoln.
Four Russells in Syracuse Fig R-9. Thomas W. Russell (seated left) and Robert Russell (standing left) traveled from Pennsylvania to Syracuse, NY, to visit their brother, James F. Russell (right), and sister, Mrs. Emma Russell Forsyth (front). Photo taken August, 1920. Thomas died 8 years later in 1928. Original hand written caption on margin: "Looking Pleasant".
Fig. R-10. Same visit to Syracuse, August, 1920. Man on left unidentified; Thomas W. Russell (seated), Robert Russell, and Alexander D. Forsyth (husband of Emma Russell). Original caption written on margin: "Out in the field".
