AOL NetFind http://www.aol.com/netfind/ - AOL NetFind (keyword:
NetFind or click on the toolbar) is the most accessible search
engine for AOL Members. It is relatively simple cup a tea search
engine and the default for AOL members. Basically NetFind is really
is EXCITE underneath the covers, but with AOL favors added.

-This search engine stands out from the rest with excellent, customizable
search opinion for advavced queries.
Yahoo! http://www.yahoo.com/
- The largest directory on the Web, YAHOO! has brabded itself
as more then a directory since its 1994 Net debut. Currently,
the Web "portal" offers an online service (with MCI),
chat, news, classifieds, e-mail, and more.
AltaVista: Main Page http://www.altavista.com/
- This search engine one of the most popular search engines on
the web (next to yahoo). WOW, what a search engine it is. Using
spiders (no Halloween joke) some of which crawl the wed daily,
Alta Vista indexes almost every word of every site it visits-
perhaps as many as 50 million sites. DO TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN
IT, however or stick to something less complex like Netfind.
HotBot http://www.hotbot.com/
- Hotbot is from WIRED magazine (AOL Keyword: WIRED), and as you
might expect, it's the most graphical search engine of them all.
A useful feature here lets users search specifically for audio
and video and images online.
Infoseek http://www.infoseek.com/
-Combines a powerful search engine (such as Lycos and Alta Vista)
with a very large Web directory (such as Yahoo!).
Lycos Home Page http://www.lycos.com/ - Lycos offers two powerfyl
engines levels of seaching: basic and custom. An excellant search
engine and very good laid out.

- This is my the same folks who bring you Excite, is yet another
combination site, with both a Web directory and a search engine.
Magellan's special claim to fame is the fact that you can screen

No Place for ARACHNOPHOBIA- SPIDERS- so called named because they
crawl around the World Wide Web (WWW) -are alaborate computer
programs that periodically go out on the web and examine pages.
Most spiders read every word on every site they find and then
index those words, building indices. What search engines do is
search the indexes (not the sites), which is why most search engine
are so fast.
STOPWORDS are terms so common on the Web sites that search engine
developers routinely exclude them. Search AltaVista for the word
"computer", for instance, and you'll get "no documents
match the query" in return . Many engines won't search for
a phase beginning with a NUMBER, and others won't search for phases
that include one-letter words. Don't search for "Vitamin
C," use "ascorbic acid" instead. Words like sex,
free, shareware, web and Windows are Spamdex words - return so
many hits as to be useless.
