Mr. Ezekiel Rubottom
Your daughter Catharine in now engaged to marry -- Samuel Cane of Fredericktown MO. I presume that Lafayette is acquainted with the family, and of course will acquaint you of his opinion.
I have known Mr. Cane for the last seven or eight years, and can recommend him as a verry worthy young man, whose qualities are good, in fact worthy the hand of any young lady -- I am pleased with the choice Catharine has made, and consider that she has been truly fortunate in gaining the affections of so worthy a man. His habits are good and not addicted to the many follies and vices so prevalent among the young men of the present day.
Juliann is well pleased, and has given her hearty approval of their marriage -- I hope that you also will give your consent to their marriage.
My health since my removal to this place has been bad, Juliett also has had bad health, though her health is now improving. Mary & Ann & Charly has been verry healthy -- I keep them at school, whenever we have a school -- Mary & Ann are both reading -- Your little grand-daughter -- Winningham is some pumpkins. Please give Mr. Cane an answer immediately -- as they wish to marry with your approbation on the 16th of the present month. Juliett & the family unite with respects & love to you & yours. Respe'ly
| Mary E. Rubottom | Jas. McManus |
