Obituary of Thomas Peyton Rubottom, son of Ezekiel and Parmelia Parish Rubottom

The Greenville Sun
May 28, 1908

Thomas P. Rubottom was born November 11, 1827. Departed this life May 18, 1908, aged 80 years, 6 months and 7 days. He was married to Mary Cox in the year 1851, from which union, a boy and a girl were born. The boy died in infancy. The girl grew up to womanhood and became the first consort of our townsman, J. A. Stephens. In the fall of 1856 the first companion died, and sometime in 1859 he remarried to Delilah Creasy, who became mother of two boys dying in infancy, and in 1872 she died.

Having lived a widower about six years, he again married Sarah E. Walker, of which marriage five boys and one girl were born. The girl died in infancy. Four of the boys are still living. Having lost this companion during the 80's, about the year 1890 he again remarried to Melissa J. McGhee, who survives him.

"Uncle Tom," as he was familiarly called, was born in Wayne County not over two hundred yards from where he was buried. He was the son of Judge Rubottom, a pioneer settler of Big Lake Creek. "Uncle Tom" made a life record that will be long remembered in Wayne County. He became converted and February 18, 1882, was baptized and became a member of the Greenville Baptist church, of which he lived a member in full fellowship till death called him from labor to reward.

Farewell father, farewell husband,

Peaceful be thy silent rest;
Slumber sweetly, God knew best
When to call thee home to rest.

Well, the delightful day will come,

When the dear Lord will bring us home;
And we shall see his face;
then with our Savior, brother, friend
A blest eternity we'll spend,
Triumphant in His grace.

An Acquaintance of 60 Yrs.

NOTE: There is still confusion over the second wife of Thomas Peyton Rubottom. Some information shows that his second wife was Frances Edward, while other information shows his second wife was Delilah Creasy. Continued research is being done to try and solve this mystery.
