The name and family of Rubottom in America came from residents and bearers of the name in Wales. The name probably originated in the southeast corner of Lancashire. The name originated from the name Ra + botom, Ra being "deer" and Botom meaning "valley." Thus, Rabotom, meaning valley of the deer or deer valley.
The first record of the surname in America was the record of the birth of Thomas Rubottom's oldest son Simon Rubottom in 1769, in what is now Chatham County, North Carolina. Family tradition has it, Thomas Rubottom was a very young man when he entered America. Some family tradition is he entered America at Charleston, South Carolina. Other tradition is he probably entered America at Philadelphia or Chester, Pennsylvania. There are several records indicating Thomas Rubottom was born in Wales and came to America by way of Ireland and Holland.
Descendants of Thomas Rubottom, the emigrant, have moved to all parts of America. They have contributed substantially to the advancement of American civilization. Outstanding traits of the family include, determination, energetic, religious, conscientious and keen minded. The Rubottoms have won success as craftsmen, clergymen, educators, farmers, statesmen, politicians, lawyers, businessmen, and engineers. They have been leaders in developing areas in North Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Utah, Idaho, Pennsylvania, Texas, Arkansas, Arizona, California, and Missouri.
Thomas Rubottom served his country in the American Revolution. The Rubottom family have contributed sons to all the wars in which the United States has been involved.
The Christian names most favored by the family are: Thomas, Simon, Ezekiel, William, John, Charles, Joseph, George, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary Elizabeth, Jane and Julia.

The surname is strongly represented across the Atlantic.
The family name of Rubottom in the United States has been spelled Rubottom on all documents and reports, without variation, from the emigrant Thomas Rubottom to the family name today.
The native Welsh characteristics are very strong in the Rubottom family in America today. They like freedom, religious freedom, music, conversation, and group meetings.
