According to an article "Waterloo Lady Mother of 15" dated Marshalltown, Iowa, Jan 9, [what year?] Harriet Ellen Sisson Lyon and her husband lived in Iowa as man and wife for sixty-five years. had fifteen children, 59 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. She was born either in Vincennes or Evansville, Indiana. Her death certificate gives her birthdate as 14 March, 1824 (rather than 1822) and her death date as 24 May, 1916. Milford Hall Lyon was the youngest of fifteen children born to Harriet Ellen (Sisson) and Edmund Burke Lyon. He was born "just a few months before his mother celebrated her fiftieth birthday anniversary" which was in 1822 or 1824 according to other sources. She would have been fifty in 1872 or 1874 but Milford was born in 1868. According to her obituary, Ellen was born near Evansville, Indiana, on the banks of the Wabash March 14, 1824, which also credits her with fourteen children. She spent her girlhood on a farm near Lockport, Illinois. Soon after he marriage she and Edmund settled in Clayton County, Iowa.

Harriet married Edmond Burke LYON, son of Rev. Richard LYON and Mary Emmaline MURCH, on 18 Mar 1843 in Prairie du Chien, Crawford Co., Wisconsin. Edmond was born 12 Feb 1818 in Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey. He died 8 Sep 1903 in Wheaton, DuPage Co., Illinois and was buried 10 Sep 1903 in Union Cem., Humboldt, Humboldt Co., Iowa.
Edmund Burke Lyon has been reported born 10 or 12 February 1818 in Princeton or Camden, New Jersey. He went out to Michigan when a youth of 18, from his native New Jersey to Warrensburg, Pa., to Niles, Michigan, and from there to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and on to "the wilderness of Iowa." In 1837 he "landed at Dubuque on a hunting trip with Mr Jett, an Indian commissioner, who died and was succeeded by Lyon. As commissioner Lyon made several peace missions to Indian tribes that were inclined to hostility." He settled in Northwestern Iowa in 1842. He was of LaPorte City, Iowa when he married Harriet Ellen Sisson in 1843. Edmund Burke Lyon was the first sheriff of Clayton county. He was buried next to A.A. Bravinder, his daughter Lucy Anna's husband.
