According to a descendant, Edwin ran away at age 13 (about 1883) after Kate married "Old Man Flint." "This was preceded by Edwin's desire for a pair of high-buttoned yellow shoes, which Flint said he could not have. Edwin got a job (maybe a newspaper route), saved his money, and bought the shoes anyway, at which point Flint beat him. This is no doubt the last in a series of incidents, and I don't know whether Flint was really an ogre or if their disagreements were mostly occasioned by Edwin's resentment of him as a stepfather. It is interesting to note that Edwin ran away shortly after his half-brother Angelo married and presumably moved away. Edwin eventually ended up in Independence, Missouri, where he met his wife Georgia. In 1905 Edwin got a job with the railroad and moved his family to California and eventually settled in Oakland." In 1905 Edwin worked for the railroad and moved to Oakland, California.
