A memorial service for Richard James Sisson (Dick), AGE 84, will be at a later date in California. Arrangements are by Mullins & Thompson of Stafford, Virginia. His body was cremated at his request.
Dick was born December 30, 1922, in Stockton, CA to Carl Hinkley Sisson and Eve Lynn Haynes Sisson and died of natural causes at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge, VA, on September 17, 2007.
Dick grew up "running wild", along with his four brothers, in Mark Twain's famed Calaveras County, California. After graduating from Calaveras High School, he attended Viola Christian College in Los Angeles, until the war broke out. He then signed up for the Navy three days before his "draft number was up". He married Jimmie "Jean" Fulfer, in 1945, and they celebrated 61 years together before her passing on July 14, 2006. He served 6 years in the Navy during WWII. He was a quartermaster aboard several ships. Most notably, he participated in the Atomic Bomb testing at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands. He worked as a glazier in Stockton, CA for 20 years and then he retired to the mountains (Bieber, Ca.) and worked for many more years as the night-watchman at a sawmill. At age 70, he and Jean packed up and moved to Oklahoma. That is the adventurous spirit dad lived. He has lived with his daughter, son-in-law, grandson and grand-daughter-in-law in Stafford, Virginia, since March 2007. Living life large in the last year, he took a cruise to Mexico, flew twice to California for visits with family, visited every civil war battleground around Stafford with his "favorite son-in-law", enjoyed several trips to Washington DC including catching the Cherry Blossoms in full bloom, and he ate shrimp every chance he got.
He taught us how to fish, camp, fix our cars, build anything and adapt to and overcome everything. We had to know how to change tires and the oil in our cars before he let us drive. He was gentle, loved a good joke and laughed easily and often. He loved to watch the antics of the birds and squirrels outside the back window and loved to hide the squirrels' pecans in the backyard just to watch them search for them later. He loved his wife whom he called "that red-head he loved so much". He cherished his kids and family. After 60 years away from church, he began attending with his daughter and son-in-law a year ago. He was active in a small group and Sunday school and loved the church services. He was glad to be a part of a loving congregation. He "rode with Louie" reading every one of Louis L'Amour's books several times over. He watched old westerns on TV and cried with the Gaither's Homecoming shows each week, and he loved to watch people. |
