656. Lemuel SISSON (Mary SISSON , Richard , Richard , George , Richard ) was born 21 Apr 1769 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. He died 29 Apr 1849 in Little Compton, Newport Co., Rhode Island.

In 1812 Lemuel removed to Newport, and in 1816 to Sakonnet Point in Little Compton. Here Lemuel became a tenant of the Roach Estate, at the time one of the best farms in the town. Lemuel's home became the mecca of the early Methodists. The first religious services held in the town by that denomination were at the Lemuel Sisson house, in 1820, preaching by the Rev. Mr. Dorchester of Portsmouth, RI, once every two weeks.

Lemuel married Susanna LAKE, daughter of David LAKE, on 29 Sep 1793 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. Susanna was born 28 Apr 1775 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. She died 20 Feb 1826 in Little Compton, Newport Co., Rhode Island.

Barbara married Barnabas SISSON [scrapbook], son of Joseph SISSON Jr. and Mary SHEARMAN, on 17 Dec 1797 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. Barnabas was born 9 May 1772 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. He died 19 Aug 1809 in Sakonnet River and was buried in Union Cemetery, Po16, Portsmouth, RI.

Barnabas (or Barnard) Sisson was a farmer and a mariner. He and his wife Barbara Sisson were married by Elder William Bliss. Barnabas administered his brother Jabez' estate, November 10, 1800. Barnabas was drowned in the Sakonnet River when his boat was upset.

Nothing more than his birth is known of Michall Sisson. Is his name mistaken? Could his name be Michael? or Michel?

Michael married Sarah G. MATTESON.

The Summer 2000 issue of the Sisson Newsletter (vol 14, no 2, page 18) reports that Michael E. Sisson married Sarah Bassett, daughter of Rev Mr. and Sarah (Tripp) Bassett. I do not know whether Sarah ever married a Mr. Matteson or whether Matteson is an error and she married only Michael Sisson. I leave Sarah's record as I originally had it, with the surname Matteson, but cautioning researchers to check both surnames.

Richard Shearman Jr. received a license as a pilot-captain on seagoing sailing vessels, signed by William Ellery:
"I, William Ellery, junior deputy Collector of the district aforesaid, do hereby cerify that Richard Shearman, an American Seaman, aged twenty-one years or hereabouts, of the height of five feet, eight and 2/8th inches, light compelxion, light hair, dark blue eyes, and was born at Portsmouth in the county of Newport, ..."

Obituary in Newport Mercury, Saturday, Oct. 14, 1865:
"Died - In Portsmouth, 11th inst., Richard Sherman, aged 74 years. He was a worthy member of the Society of Friends and was highly respected and esteemed by all who kenw him. The widow and orphan always found in him a faithful friend, ready at all times to serve them. He was often called to serve the town in an official capacity. For about thirty years he was Town Clerk, in which position his accuracy and efficiency was acknowledged by all. While thus ohonored and respected by the public, he was most tenderly beloved by his family. They mourn not as those without hope, but feel that their loss is his gain; that he has gone from labor to reward."

Richard married Sarah Ann ROGERS, daughter of Joseph ROGERS and Sarah GEORGE. Sarah was born 1791. She died 8 Jan 1863.
