Elmo Sisson was active in Boy Scouts from a young age. He remained active with the program for more than 60 years. The only major Scouting award he did not receive was his Eagle - and that was only because he never learned to swim.
In 1929 he saved the life of a young boy. Elmo was delivering newspapers when he heard the child's cries for help - the child had fallen through the ice into the Battle Creek River near the Verona Dam. Elmo was able to go out on the ice, reach the child, and bring him safely to shore. When he was finished, he picked up his bag of newspapers and continued delivering the evening paper to his customers. Although he was approved to receive the Lifesaving Award from the Boy Scouts of America in 1929, it was not actually awarded until May 1984.
Elmo worked in electronics, both owning his own radio repair business and later as an electrician with Post (which became Post Division of General Foods).
He was a no-nonsense man. When asked by his grand-daughter about thunder, he gave the scientific answers, none of the "little men bowling upstairs" kinds of answers adults frequently give to young children.
Elmo and Betty were always involved in the lives of their grandchildren. Each summer they would take one or two grandchildren on an extended vacation to a different part of the United States. These trips were more than vacations - they were also learning experiences. Elmo made sure his grandchildren could read a map, follow directions, and knew basic survival skills. He even taught his granddaughters how to bake a cake over a campfire.
