Descendants of Richard (1608-1684) and Mary (d. 1692) SISSON of Rhode Island

Sixth Generation

(Continued)

783. Simeon SISSON (John , Giles , Thomas , George , Richard ) was born 2 Apr 1786 in Unadilla, Otsego Co., New York. He died 19 Jul 1838 in Middleport, Meigs Co., Ohio and was buried in Lower (now Pioneer) Cemetery, Middleport, Ohio.

Mark Sisson, 83 Olentangy St, Columbus, Ohio 43202, says that after Simeon and his family came to Ohio, they made their home on Story's Run in Gallia County. Myra June (Sisson) Argabrite has pictures of the houses built by Simeon Sisson and the one next door built by his son Simeon Lewis Sisson, and pictures of their gravestones in Riverview Cemetery, Middleport, Ohio.

Simeon married Susannah POTTER, daughter of William POTTER and Margaret PIERCE. Susannah was born about 1786. She died 14 May 1838 in Meigs Co., Ohio.

Sussanah Potter "of Round Top, New York" seven miles from Unadilla, New York.

They had the following children:

784. Benjamin SISSON (John , Giles , Thomas , George , Richard ) was born 18 Oct 1787 in Unadilla, Otsego Co., New York. He died 8 Jul 1850 in Knox Co., Indiana.

Benjamin is buried in the lower part of Knox County, Indiana, close to the Wabash River by a place formerly known as Shields Corner but later known as Scotts Chapel Cemetery, near the Illinois border.

Benjamin married (1) Nancy MC CLURA before 1807.

Benjamin also married (2) Hannah CRANSTON in 1807 in Otsego Co., New York. Hannah was born about 1785. She died about 1808.

Hannah (Cranston) Sisson apparently died soon after the birth in 1808 of her only child, Hannah Sisson, since Benjamin Sisson married again that year.

They had the following children:

  1728 F i
Hannah SISSON was born 1808 in Unadilla, Otsego Co., New York.

Nothing more is known of Hannah Sisson after her birth.

Benjamin also married (3) Zaviah PENDLETON, daughter of Simeon PENDLETON and Tabitha NILES, about 1807. Zaviah was born 11 Oct 1791 in Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island. She died in Switzerland Co., Indiana.

Sophia (or Zaviah) (Pendleton) Sisson was reported blind in the 1850 census.

From will of Simeon Pendleton, Zaviah's father:

Nothing more than her birth is known of Lucinda Sisson.
+ 1733 M vi John Crandall SISSON was born 3 Aug 1818 and died 30 Jun 1899.
  1734 F vii

Nancy married Nathan KEITH on 27 Aug 1839 in Switzerland Co., Indiana.
  1735 F viii
Marcy SISSON was born 1822.
+ 1736 M ix Eli Daniel SISSON was born 1824 and died 7/8 Mar 1863.

787. James C. SISSON (John , Giles , Thomas , George , Richard ) was born 22 Apr 1792 in Unadilla, Otsego Co., New York. He died 17 Dec 1860 in Gallatin Co., Kentucky and was buried in Ten Mile Cem, Gallatin Co., Kentucky.

James Sisson married Lorena [__?__](who is also reported as Irene Arnold). He sold land in Hoosick, New York, in 1820 and 1824. They went to Ohio and Indiana. He appears in the 1820 census for Athens, Ohio, but not in the 1830 census there. The 1820 census shows two persons in the household 16-26 years, and one under 10. Donnie Satchwell Flynn, a descendant of James C. Sisson who has done extensive research on him, believes that there were other children born to James, between Henry and Alonzo, but neither she nor her daughter Rhoda Meier have been able to document them. James does appear in the 1850 Switzerland County, Indiana, census with sons Alonzo age 23 and Ebenezer age 21. Son Henry B. was already married and had a family by that time. James and Lorena (clearly Lorena on the stone) are buried at Ten Mile Baptist Church Cemetery near Napoleon, Gallatin County, Kentucky. His headstone states "age 70 y, 7 m, and 25 d" (which gives a birthyear of 1790 which conflicts with his brother Amos). Lorena is buried next to James; her headstone says "Lorena, wife of . . . . " The stone is broken, but a 1937 recording of all the stones in the cemetery shows "wife of J.C., died 9-5-1873, age 81 years."

This James C. Sisson is not the James who married Mary "Polly" Cartmill in Virginia; this present James (son of John and Alcha [Crandall] Sisson) was only 15 at that time. It is unreasonable to think that a 15-year-old Quaker boy went from New York to Virginia among another clan of Sissons, married a local belle, owned a large estate and many servants, and founded Sissonville, West Virginia.

James married Lorena. Lorena was born about 1792 in New York State. She died 5 Sep 1873 in Gallatin Co., Kentucky and was buried in Ten Mile Cem, Gallatin Co., Kentucky.

Lorena [__?__] is reported as Laranda in the 1850 census, and is also reported as Irene Arnold.

Carol Sisson Regehr sent a message 15 June 2000 which says:
"Per the Richard & Mary book, p. 165, it has been reported that the wife of James Sisson, son of John Sisson and Alcha Crandall of Unadilla NY, was Irene Arnold. In the 1850 census of Switzerland Co. IN, James' wife is called something like "Laranda". Her name on her grave marker is "Lorena". In fancy script, "Lorena" could certainly be misread as "Irene". Or possibly, first and second wives? Mary Shoop has recently sent copies of old letters mentioning Irene Arnold. In a letter dated March 25, 1903, from J.W. Gardner (whose line is 1.Richard 2.Geo 3.Tho 4.Giles 5.John/Alcha 6.Wilson Crandall 7.Rebecca Sisson Gardner 8.William Lewis Gardner 9.J.W. Gardner (b. 1844)) to Louie (female) Dean White (whose line is 5.John/Alcha 6.Giles 7.Henry 8.Lucinda Sisson Dean 9.Louie Dean White), J.W. gives James' wife's name as Irene Arnold. He does not state the source of this information except that it came from his father's brother's research "many years ago". Other sections contain information now known to be erroneous. But all other spouses of children of John and Alcha are correct (but incomplete in the case of Benjamin at least).

They had the following children:

+ 1737 M i Henry B. SISSON was born 22 Apr 1820 and died 15 Dec 1908.
+ 1738 M ii Alonzo SISSON was born about 1827.
+ 1739 M iii Ebenezer SISSON was born Jan 1829 and died 1918.

789. Sarah SISSON (John , Giles , Thomas , George , Richard ) was born 27 Oct 1800 in Unadilla, Otsego Co., New York. She died 4 Jun 1861 and was buried in Musk Road Cemetery, Chapin Farm, Pittsfield, NY.

Birth and death dates for Sarah and Alvin are from their headstone. After the death of Sarah's father John Sisson, Alvin Peck and Aaron Sisson bought up most of the shares of John Sisson's homestead. Sarah's mother Alcha (Crandall) Sisson lived with her daughter Sarah Peck until Alcha's death in 1832.

Thanks to Ron Peck for much information on Sarah's descendants!

+ 1747 M viii Edward Lester PECK was born 1836 and died 1900.

791. Isaac T. SISSON (Arnold , Giles , Thomas , George , Richard ) was born about 1795 in Exeter, Otsego Co., New York. He died about 1875 in Medina, Orleans Co., New York.

David Henry Sisson wrote me, David Arne Sisson, and said that he believes that Isaac T. Sisson is a son of Arnold Sisson (Richard, George, Thomas, Giles, Arnold), not of Samuel M. Sisson (Richard, George, Thomas, Giles, Samuel M.).

Isaac married Eleanor TOBEY, daughter of Lott TOBEY and Abigail TOMPKINS, about 1810 in New York State. Eleanor was born about 1792 in Otsego Co., New York. She died 24 Jan 1847 in Pembroke, Genesee Co., New York.

Eleanor's parents names are theoretical. An Eleanor Tobey, wife of an Isaac T. Sisson is mentioned in Surrogate File #106, Rensselaer County, NY, according to a message from . This Eleanor (Tobey) Sisson had siblings Priscilla (Tobey) Allen, Philip Toby, Elisha Toby, and Nancy (Toby) Bonesteel. The author of the message was seeking "evidence that Lott Tobey on 1820 Census, Grafton, Rensselaer County, NY, was the same person reported to have married Abigail Tompkins at New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1790. The will of Abigail Toby who died April 1838 (Surrogate File #106, Rennsalaer County, NY) names" the children listed above.

792. Giles SISSON (Arnold , Giles , Thomas , George , Richard ) was born about 1805 in Livonia, Livingston Co., New York. He died 5 Mar 1882 in Leroy, Genesee Co., New York.

799. Elisha SISSON (Nathan , William , Thomas , George , Richard ) was born 18 Dec 1763 in Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island. He died 23 Apr 1844 in Lyons, Wayne Co., New York.

Elisha Sisson (Richard 1, George 2, Thomas 3, Nathan 4, Elisha 5) is listed in the Rhode Island 1777 Military Census (as transcribed by Mildred Mosher Chamberlain, and published by the Genealogical Publishing Co., in 1985) as 16 to 50 years old (and therefore as eligible for military service) and living in Westerly, Rhode Island. Family legend says he was a captain and Revolutionary Volunteer from Connecticut, but there is no military or pension record for him in the National Archives. As a member of the Rhode Island General Assembly he was "a Commissioner to the U.S." He probably took part in Shays' Rebellion in Massachusetts in 1786. The 1790 Federal Census of the Town of Wilbraham, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, page 131, shows Elisha Sisson (Film ID# MAS1a2811868 or MAS1a2811870), with one free white male of 16 years and under; two free white females. The 1800 Federal Census of Barre, Orange County, Vermont, lists him and shows one free white male 10-16 years, one 26-45 years; one free white female under 10 years, one 10-16 years, one 26-45 years. Elisha is listed in Lyons, Ontario County, New York, in 1820 (page 117), and in Lyons, Wayne County, New York, in 1830 (page 119) and 1840 (page 59). According to his son William, Elisha went from Westerly, Washington County, RI, to Wilbraham, Hampden County, MA, to Barre, Orange County, VT, to Scipio, Cayuga County, NY, to Fayette, Seneca County, NY, to Lyons, Wayne County, NY, to Sodus, Wayne County, NY, and back to Lyons, probably by 1816, when his son William was in Lyons. He died at 6:00 AM April 23, 1844. The Rochester D.D. newspaper of 4 May 1844, page 2, column 7, reports "Deaths: In Lyons on the 23rd ult., Captain Elisha Sisson, father of Hon. William Sisson of that village, in the 81st year of his age." According to his wife Elizabeth (Chappell) Sisson's family Bible, as continued by their son William, Elisha Sisson was buried "in the Presbyterian Cemetery, near John Smith's, in the Town of Lyons, Wayne County, NY." SOURCES: The Sisson Newsletter, v.3, no.2; The Elizabeth (Chappell) Sisson family Bible (in the possession of David Arne Sisson).
