Ichabod was adopted by his step-father Gilbert H. Sisson, taking Sisson as his surname.

In 2003 a descendant of Ichabod Babcock Sisson took part in the Sisson Y-Chromosome DNA Project, and was found to carry the same DNA as many other descendants of Richard and Mary. We therefore accept Ichabod Babcock Sisson's descendant's Y-chromosome DNA as evidence that both Ichabod and his descendants are linked genetically to their immigrant ancestor Richard Sisson through Ichabod's paternal line.
