Stephen Sisson was born in Otsego County, New York. He sold "1/13th of John Sisson farm" to Ira Sabin and sold 200 acres in Unadilla, New York, for $400 to John Gardner. According to the Pomeroy (Ohio) Sentinal of the 6th of either January or February, 1906, Stephen Sisson "in 1816, at the age of 21, rode a horse from Otsego County, New York, to Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio, to look over the new country where his friends, the Holcombs, had settled in 1804. He was so well pleased with Gallia County that the following winter he made a sleigh and drove back to his old home near Unadilla, New York. His report of the new country induced his uncles David, Giles, Amos, and Simeon to return with him in 1817. His father being dead, he brought his mother and her family with him to Ohio." All of them joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a class leader, exhorter at Bethel, Ohio, an abolitionist and Republican. Stephen and Matilda Varian were married by Rev Gould at Gallipolis, Ohio. Stephen was a carpenter with 500 acres. Ahas and Lucinda's descendant Beth Becktel says "Most of the Morehouse family are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Gallia county. I have a photo of both Ahas's and Lucinda's tombstones. They read: Ahas S. Morehouse/ died/ Nov 23, 1848/ aged/ 52 ys, 5m 7d. Lucinda/ wife of/ A.S. Morehouse/ died/ Nov 20, 1862/ aged/ 65 y ?m 15 d." Ahas and Lucinda were married by Samuel Barlow, J.P.
Lucinda married Ahas Selic MOREHOUSE on 23 Jun 1818 in Gallia Co, Ohio. Ahas was born 16 Jun 1796 in Otsego Co., New York. He died 23 Nov 1848 in Porter, Gallia Co., Ohio and was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia Co., Ohio.
Ahas Selic (or Selig) Morehouse has been incorrectly called Charles Selic/Selig Morehouse. The problem probably arose from someone's mistaking Ahas as Chas (an abbreviation for Charles). Another possible source of the confusion may be due to a gravestone in Fairview Cemetery. There is a stone for Daniel W. Morehouse, b Nov 18, 1835, d Nov 16, 1910, "son of Charles S. and Lucinda Morehouse." "Samuel Gorton of Rhode Island and his Descendants" by Dr. Thomas Arthur Gorton (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1985) gives further information about Ahas S. Morehouse. "The History of Gallia County," Chicago and Toledo: H.H. Hardesty, Publishers, 1882, page xv, states "The first Methodist preaching in this vicinity was by the Rev. Henry Baker, about the year 1817, at the residence of Ahaz S. Morehouse, a log house located at the mouth of Mill Creek, then outside the corporation. The reception of the Methoist itinerant was throught the instrumentality of his wife, Lucinda Sisson Morehouse, the sister of Stephen Sisson, who is now living at Gallipolis, in the eighty-eighth year of his age."
