Thomas Sisson was a farmer. He and his wife Hannah Brown moved to Tecumseh, Michigan, apparently from Aurora, New York, where their son George W. Sisson was born, according to The Sisson Newsletter, v 5 #4 p 11. See also the Raisin Twp. Lenawee County, Michigan, 1850 census. According to the Sisson Newsletter, v 6 #1 p 15, "Thomas and Hannah had at least six children, the first born in Rhode Island, and five born in Michigan." Immediately following George W. Sisson's birth is noted for 11 Sep 1819, in Aurora, Cayuga County, New York. The 1840 census shows: 2 m 5-10, 1 m 10-125, and 1 m 50-60; 2 f 5-10, 1 f 15-20, and 1 f 40-50. The Sisson Newsletter v 12 #4 p 11 lists all fourteen children mentioned in Thomas' will (dated 10 Nov 1849, son George and son-in-law William Tilton, executors) and gives Sources: RI VRs Arnold 4:106; Birth record book 1:149, 4:143, Town Hall records of Tiverton, RI; Thomas' will dated 10 Nov 1849;Tecumseh VR compiled by Clara Waldron; Raisin Twp, Lenawee County, Michigan, 1840 census page 142 and 1850 census page 487; Monona County, Iowa 1870 census for Thomas, Jr., (which states that both his parents were born in Michigan); family data from Mary (Kaercher) Smith, Cleveland, Ohio; family data from Laurel (Damon) Steffes, Orefield, PA.

This update to Thomas' story comes from The Sisson Newsletter, v 13, no 4: Thomas went to Tecumseh, Michigan, from Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York in 1827. He purchased 80 acres, then 160 acres "adjoining the river there." Thomas served in various civic positions in 1828 and following years.

Holder's descendants Gary Ward and Nancy Bruce Crilly were involved in a project to move the family graves from old farmland in 1998. They were assisted by Illinois archeologist Dawn Cobb. The photo in the "scrapbook" shows the new grave for Holder Sisson in the Lockport City Cemetery.

Holder Sisson was a farmer and a soldier in the War of 1812, near Evansville, Indiana, drafted January 14, 1814. According to a biographical article from "The Silent Evangel" (no publishing information available) regarding Millford Hall Lyon, a grandson of Holder, "Holder Sisson fought with General Scott at Lundy's Lane in the war of 1812, and was afterwards captain of a company during the during the Black Hawk war, and commanded a company at Fort Dearborn, where Chicago now stands." He was granted a claim (#14334) of $55 in Will County, Illinois, as a soldier of 1812 to replace personal property worn out, lost, or destroyed. He and his first wife Mary "Polly" Anderson moved to Monticello, New York. Holder and Polly had two children born in New York, one who died an infant, the other Allen Shepard Sisson. It has been reported that Holder had a younger brother Allen Shepherd born in 1812, but this was actually his son Allen who was raised by Samuel and Jerusha Anderson, Polly's parents. Polly died in 1817 "in the third year of their marriage." Holder married his second wife, Clarissa Bronson, in Vigo County, Indiana. (Other records put the wedding in Lockport, Illinois.) They moved to Will County, Illinois, in October 1831. He was a captain in the Black Hawk War and the first commissioner of Cook County and Will County. Holder lived in Cook County, Illinois, at the time that his father Philip Sisson Jr's estate was being administered in 1833 and 1834. In 1835 and following, school classes were held in a little room built by Holder as an addition to the house. Later a separate school was built. Holder also married (2) Clarissa BRONSON, daughter of Thomas BRONSON and Anne RUMSEY, on 28 Feb 1821 in Vigo Co., Indiana. Clarissa was born Sep 1793 in Roxbury, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. She died 6 Aug 1858 in Lockport, Will Co., Illinois and was buried in Lockport, Will, Illinois, Old Pioneer Cem.

Shirley Egan sent the following information to David and Joan Sisson who published it in Vol. 8, No. 4, page 10, of The Sisson Newsletter: Clarissa Brownson/Bronson was born in Roxbury, Connecticut, and moved with her parents to Barrington, Yates County (then Ontario County), New York, about 1807. Cyrus Brownson/Bronson is correctly given as her brother, but Abraham and Rhoda (Warner) Brownson/Bronson, previously thought to be their parents, are not. Thomas Brownson, Clarissa's father, was the uncle of an Abraham Brownson, however. It is likely that Clarissa and her husband Holder Sisson never moved to Monticello, New York. Holder lived near enough to Barrington during the period 1810-1820, and he did serve in the same campaign with Cyrus Brownson, to account for his meeting Clarissa in New York State, even though they were apparently married in Indiana. However, this Indiana marriage may not be fact either. Perhaps they misplaced the proof of their marriage and needed another solemnization in Indiana? See page 311 of the "Genealogical and Biographical Record of Will County, Illinois, 1900," (Chicago: Bio. Pub. Co., n.d.) by Rick Bronson of Spokane, Washington, which covers the biography of Eliel S. Bronson, son of Cyrus (Clarissa's brother) and his second wife. Rick Bronson identifies his grandfather as Thomas Bronson of Roxbury, and reports that his father Cyrus was reared in New York State although born in Roxbury, and that his father's brother-in-law was Holder Sisson. The erroneous information that Clarissa was the daughter of Abraham Bronson is pervasive in the Bronson family genealogies. Shirley Egan hopes that it will not spread to infect the Sisson genealogies.
