March 1, 1837.  Received of John Robertson, former Guardian of Mary Sisson, all the property both real and personal and all the money and everything else that come to his hands as Guardian aforesaid.  Signed:  John Lawson

Mary Sisson was the youngest child of Charles and Barsheba Sisson.  She lived her childhood at the family home in Habersham County, Georgia, until the death of her father on May 23, 1832.  I believe that she returned to Monroe County, Tennessee, with her older sister Cassie and her husband John Robertson.  The Robertson family along with Polly migrated to Calhoun County, Alabama about 1833 -1834 and continued a friendship with the Lawson family that had began in Tennessee.  John Lawson and Polly Sisson married and lived in Benton County, Alabama until the mid 1840s.

Mary married John W. LAWSON on 17 Jan 1836 in Near Decatur, GA (Possibly Habersham County). John was born 13 Feb 1813 in Sevierville, Tennessee. He died 13 Mar 1865 in Elmira, NY Confederate POW Camp.

[Sisson.ftw]

John W. Lawson joined the Confederate States of America Army in January 1863, in Macon Georgia, for three years.  He served in Capt. Slaten's Company. Macon Light Artillery, Georgia Artillery.  He was captured at Petersburg on June 17, 1864.  He was transferred to Elmira, New York, POW Camp on June 17, 1864.  He died on March 13, 1865.

In 1850, John and Mary Lawson were in the Western Division of Monroe County, Mississippi.  He was listed as a merchant with a personal worth of $40,000.  A clerk listed as James Hampton was living in the Lawson household.

1840 Census

Number in household including slaves    17
number in manufacturing                             5  mining
Number in agriculture                                  1

This record indicates that John and Polly Lawson had thirteen slaves and a worth of $40,000.

In 1850, John Lawson gave the following power of attorney to Josiah Walton.  In 1851, the Lawson's last child was born and given the name of Josephine Walton Lawson.  I believe that there is a family connection between these two parties but have not discovered the connection.

He was elected Circuit Judge in 1860, and volunteered for service in the CSA Army at the onset of hostilities in 1861.  He became a Lt. Colonel in the Confederate Army and was killed when a large mini ball pierced his left side while fighting in a skirmish with Union Troops at Dansville, Virginia.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville.

Excerpted from:  Alabama:  Her History, Resources, War Record and Public Men by Brewer Pg. 543, 544

Martin was somewhat above medium height, compactly built, with florid complexion, and prominent brow.  In his profession he was laborious;  as an advocate eloquent and impassioned, with a soaring fancy;  impressing juries with the sincerity of his words.  As a jurist, his decision in the stateVs. Murphy, adopted by the supreme court as law, is a monument to his ability.  He was furthermore, an humble christian, an honest man, and an affectionate friend, and a true soldier.

"With him duty was a guiding star - one that was never lost sight of;  and in the shinning but rugged path marked out by it he was never known to falter or waver.  This was conspicuously manifest in the last act of his life.  He had obtained leave of absence from the army to hold his courts, but postponed his departure to take part with his regiment in the expected engagement.  To a comrade who found him on his knees before the expedition set out, he expresses the conviction that the last day of his life had dawned, and he was prepared for it.  The death that he looked for found him where duty placed him."
