Ed Clay left Alabama soon after the untimely death of his first wife.  Lore has it that he swapped his horse and buggy for a train ticket to Texas.  He wrote home for awhile and after forty two years his son Jim brought him back for a visit.  He decided he wanted to move back to Alabama so he bought a farm and moved back. He was diagnosed with cancer after  two or three years and his children moved him back to Texas where he died.

Chester was a native of Jacksonville, Alabama.  He became a banker and resided in Montgomery where he became ill with tuberculosis and it became necessary for the family to move back to Jacksonville.

Chester married Tremlett Herndon RANDOLPH on 6 Sep 1897. Tremlett was born 4 May 1876. She died 25 Mar 1901.

Mrs. T.R. Mattison, wife of Mr. Chester Mattison, died at the family residence corner Madison Avenue and Lawrence Street at 8 o'clock yesterday morning, after a two week illness of Smallpox.

Mrs Mattison was 24 years of age and one of the most beautiful and cultured young married women of Montgomery.  She was born and reared in Blount Spring sand as Miss Tremlet Randolph, a daughter of the late Hon. Bret Randolph. was considered one of the most popular young women of North Alabama.

Several weeks ago Mrs. Mattison visited Selma and it was there she contracted the disease which caused her death.  Shortly after returning home she was seized with smallpox.

The deceased is survived by a husband and one child, a brother and sister who have much sympathy in their sorrow.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon.  Many friends attended the funeral while many more gathered at the cemetery to pay the last tribute to the dead.  Rev. E.G. Murphy of St. John's Episcopal Church conducted the funeral services.  The floral offerings were abundant and beautiful.
