Hugh Tomlinson was born (date unknown). Parents: Humphrey Beckett Tomlinson and Susannah .

Hugh Tomlinson was born in 1720. He served in the military in the Maryland Militia in 1748. He was listed as a member of Capt. George Beal's Troop of Horses from Montgomery County, Maryland. His brothers Grove and James, and Edward Mockbee were also listed as part of that Troop. He was a farmer/planter in Frederick County, Maryland. Hugh owned tracts of land called "Johnney and Molley" and "Elizabeth's Delight" before 1765 in Frederick County, Maryland. He also owned part of the resurvey of "Elizabeth's Delight," as well as 4 horses, 2 heifers, 4 cows, 10 sheep, and one female Negro slave. He signed a will in 1765 in Frederick County, Maryland. He named four sons in his will: William, Hugh, Jr., Grove, and Humphrey Beckett Tomlinson. The latter is six years older than William, but is not named as one of "my three children." All of Hugh, Sr.'s land was bequeathed to his second son, Hugh, Jr. William and Humphrey were named second and third in line, should Hugh, Jr. die without leaving any lawful heirs. William was bequeathed one mare colt, one heifer, and one feather bed.
There is a possible explanation for the fact that William did not ingerit his father's land. Stories have been passed down through the generations that William T. Linson took a slave belonging to his father in England and sold it to pay passage on a French ship to America. Other stories say that he "stolt" his father's horse and slave in Virginia and went to Ohio. Still another says that "his father in England learned him the carpenter trand and old William t. Linson went on the sea or ocean as ship's carpenter when he was about fourteen years old and never saw any of his folks afterwards. He was on the sea about nine years."
As with most stories that are passed down, many of the facts become confused. However, each may contain some degree of truth. It is unclear as to whether the stories pertain to William, Sr. or William, Jr. It is a fact that William Tomlinson, Sr. was born in Frederick County, Maryland, so it does not seem possible that either he or his son would have sought passage on a ship from England to America. One possible explanation might be that William Tomlinson, Sr. took a horse and/or slave belonging to his father when he was fourteen and left home, possibly to work as a ship's carpenter. This being so, William (born 1750) would have been gone at the time that his father wrote his will in 1765. Having fallen out of his father's good graces, his father would very likely have left the bulk of his estate to his second son. If the timing is correct, William would have returned to Maryland about 1773 after both of his parents had died. This would all be plausible, since his first child was born in Frederick County in 1775. However, this is all conjecture, and will likely never be proven. He died in 1765 at the age of 45 in Frederick County, Maryland. Hugh was buried in 1765 in Johnney and Molley, Frederick County, Maryland. He lived in the part of Frederick County, Maryland that became Montgomery County in 1777, after his death. Parents: Grove Tomlinson.

He bought this land on the south side of Rocky Creek, in the northeastern part of what later was to become Iredell County when it was created in 1788. It occupies an area known as the "Claude A. Tomlin's Plantation." He died about 1786 at the age of 34 in Rowan County, North Carolina.
