Sgt Maj Wallace K Vance USMC was born on 7 June 1912 in Julesburg, Sedgwick County, Colorado. He served in the military during World War II and the Korean War in the United States Marine Corps after 1940. He entered the Marine Corps prior to the start of World War II. He saw early action in the Pacific, notably on Guadalcanal. He contracted malaria, so missed Tarawa, where his unit was wiped out. He went on to other islands, where he was awarded the Silver Star and promoted to Sergeant Major. He continued in service after the war, where he saw early combat in the Korean War and was at Inchon, where he participated in the famous "march to the sea." He later was pensioned out due to post-Korean frostbite. He died on 11 July 1959 at the age of 47 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. Wallace was buried after 11 July 1959 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. He was named after his uncle. The "K" in his given name is not an initial, it is his middle name.
