Federal Census entry indicates his father was born in Ohio. Estimates of his date of birth have been found on various documents, generally ranging from 1813 to 1819, but thus far nothing has been found to indicate an actual birthdate. He lived in Fairview, Highland County, Ohio in 1860. He served in the military during the Civil War in Company D, 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry from 12 January 1864 to 31 July 1864. He enlisted in Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio, and his original enlistment papers show him as enlisting in Company D, but other documents found show him as Company B and Company E. This could reflect an error in documents, or subsequent transfers, but given his short service prior to his death, it seems unlikely that all would be correct.. In January 1864 Edmund was a laborer in Highland County, Ohio. He died on 31 July 1864 in Camp Dennison Hospital, Camp Dennison, Hamilton County, Ohio. Cause of death is shown as fistula and diarrhea. He was buried on 31 July 1864 in Camp Dennison Cemetery, Hamilton County, Ohio. Records located appear to indicate that he was buried the same day he died. He was extremely ill, and things are done during wars that are not commonly done at other times, but this seems rather unusual. Edmund was described as having gray eyes, black hair, fair complexion, and 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was buried on 4 July 1869 in Spring Grove Cemetery, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was reinterred in Section 21, Lot C313 of Spring Grove. His name in the cemetery's microfiche records is shown as Edward Brewer, but the name on his headstone is Edmund Brewer. Edmund is believed to be correct, because that is what is found in most records. His given name has also been found as Edmond and Edward. Connection to his father is based on quite a lot of circumstantial information, and not on the basis of substantiated information.
