His family lived in Virginia and North Carolina about the time of his birth, even owning property, according to one source, that actually straddled the state line. His son Dennis' 1880 U. S. Federal Census entry indicates his father was born in Ohio. Estimates of his date of birth have been found on various documents, generally ranging from 1813 to 1819 but the 1850 census indicating 1805, but thus far nothing has been found to indicate a specific birthdate. He appeared in the census on 7 August 1820 in Chatham County, North Carolina. He lived with his parents and siblings in Chatham County, North Carolina on 7 August 1820. He enlisted in Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio, and his original enlistment papers show him as enlisting in Company D, but other documents found show him as Company B and Company E. This could reflect an error in documents, or subsequent transfers, but given his short service prior to his death, it seems unlikely that all would be correct.. In January 1864 Edmund was a laborer in Highland County, Ohio. He died of fistula and diarrhea on 31 July 1864 at the age of 51 at Camp Dennison Hospital in Camp Dennison, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was buried on 31 July 1864 at Camp Dennison Cemetery in Camp Dennison, Hamilton County, Ohio. Records located appear to indicate that he was buried the same day he died. He was extremely ill, and things are done during wars that are not commonly done at other times, but this seems rather unusual. Edmund was reburied on 4 July 1869 in Spring Grove Cemetery, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was reinterred in Section 21, Lot C313 of Spring Grove. His name in the cemetery's microfiche records is shown as Edward Brewer, but the name on his headstone is Edmund Brewer. Edmund is believed to be correct, because that is what is found in most records. He was described as having gray eyes, black hair, fair complexion, and 5 feet 8 inches tall. His given name has also been found as Edmond and Edward. Parents: Dennis Brewer and Pherabe .

His mother continued to live on the land until her death. He signed a will on 24 April 1802 in Brunswick County, Virginia.
