He served for a while on bar tugs, and was later master of a number of small steamers running out of Astoria. He was also in charge of a pilot schooner stationed off the mouth of the Columbia River until given command of a lightship. In 1892 Archibald was a Captain of the lightship "Columbia River No. 50" in Oregon. He was given the first command of the first lightship on the Pacific Coast, the "Columbia River No. 50," built by the Union Iron Works of San Francisco. It was placed in service off the mouth of the Columbia River in 1892 for the safety of shipping entering and leaving the Columbia River and surrounding Pacific coast. He appeared in the census in 1920 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. In 1920 he was an a Master Mariner for a shipping company. According to his obituary, his funeral was "at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, May 2d" and handled by "Grays, Divisadero street at Post with interment private." In view of the fact he spent nearly all his life on board ships or otherwise near the sea, it is thought that this would indicate he may have been buried at sea but this is has not been documented.
