In addition to serving as County Commissioner in Douglas County, William had also served as Second Surveyor of Todd County and also different town offices over a period of several years. William Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge 180 between 1888 and 1889 in Osakis, Douglas County, Minnesota. William was the Second Commander of the G. A. R. in Osakis, the first Crow/Crowe descendent to become a member of the Masonic fraternity, and the first Worshipful Master of Osakis Lodge 180. William was a firm believer in Masonry and was probably one of the best informed Masons of his time. He held an office in the Masonic Order for 23 syears. In 1890 he was nearly burned to death while saving the records of the Masonic Lodge during a fire. One ear was burned to his head and both hands so crippled he was never able to open them entirely again. He died in 1927. Following his service in the Civil War, he added an "e" to his surname, and thus the name became "Crowe" from then on. According to one source, "William was a man of intense convictions and considerable temper. He called a spade a spade, regardless of the consequences. His honesty was outstanding and merchants at Osakis said his word was worth more than all the notes they had in the bank. While not a Prohibitionist, he was a firm believer in temperance." The same source further stated, "William had kept a diary since the Civil War. In this, he had written many interesting things, not only pertaining to his own life as well as to that of the relatives. For instance, he gave a very detailed account of the removal of his parents, William and Elizabeth Lock Crowe from Ohio to Indiana. He described the log cabin they built in Indiana and their life in that community. He also described the attempt of the trappers and hunters to drive the settlers out and the vicious neighbor who shot his father's horse. He mentioned the town of Rockford and what a lawless place it was. He also told of how his father saw a man murdered in Rockford. After the mob had hanged the guilty man to a post, the people cut him down so the law could take its course. In this diary he also told the story of his trip to Minnesota with David Loch, Lyman Loch and Nelson Fitch. This incident can be found related in the history of Nelson Fitch. His diary consists of many volumes which his son, Cassius, was asked to donate to the City of Osakis because of the valuable history he had written of the town. After 1923 he was a Newspaper worker in Sunnyside, Yakima County, Washington. Cassius relocated to Sunnyside, Washington to work for the Sunnyside Sun newspaper, where he remained as of 1938. He was named after his father's cousin, Cassius Lock/Loch. Like his father, Cassius was a faithful Mason. He passed through the chairs of the Blue Lodge and Royal Arch Masons. In 1938 he was reportedly serving as Grand Royal Arch Captain of the Grand Chapter of Royal Masons of Washington. Merlin took his first two degrees of Masonry in the same lodge as George Washington at Fredericksburg, Virginia. His third degree was taken in Osakis in 1919 so his father might witness the work. Merlin served as Patron of the Eastern Star, Commander of the local American Legion Post in 1932, and acted as drum major of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps from the time it started in 1927 until 1934. He won the drum majors state championship title in 1928, and in 1937 acted as the drum major judge at the American Legion convention in Walla Walla, Washington.
