He died in a duel with Andrew Jackson, later to become President of the United States, on 30 May 1806 in Harrison's Mills, Kentucky. Dueling was illegal in Tennessee, so both dueling parties had a day's ride and an overnight stay ahead of them before they met. The dueling ground was across the Red River at Harrison's Mills, Kentucky, and the two parties met there before the sun was over the trees on May 30. His body was returned to Maryland by Huyett Truxton, his faithful Negro man-servant. Charles was buried on 3 June 1806 in Grove Road Cemetery, Maryland. He was buried on 29 May 1966 in Wiltshire Manor, Caroline County, Maryland. Following the discovery of his grave where he was buried following his duel, he was reinterred here at the mansion where he was born, and where his family lived for generations. Actually, there is no cemetery at the spot where he is now buried. His is the only grave there. The owners at the time of reinterment donated the land to the Caroline County Historical Society.
