Armstead Doggett was born about 1792 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He served in the military during the War of 1812 in the 5th Regiment of Virginia Militia from 31 March 1813 to 14 October 1813. He served as a private in Lt. John Lamkin's company of infantry, and later transferred to Capt. Edwards' company. He served in the military during the War of 1812 in the 1st Regiment of Virginia Militia from 4 August 1814 to 17 December 1814. He served a second term in the War of 1812, this time in Capt. Allen's company of infantry, where he was originally appointed a second corporal, then corporal on Aug 22 1814. Armstead owned government land warrant after 1815 in Milan, Sullivan County, Missouri. His two services in the War of 1812 each entitled him to a bounty land warrant for 80 acres of land, and both were left at his death to his widow. Records from the general land office in Washington, D. C. show that warrant 55164 for 80 acres near Milan on Jun 18 1857, and was patented Jun 10 1897. It might be worth noting that, if dates shown here are correct, both he and his wife had died by this time, so final ownership of the land grants is unknown. He owned government land warrant after 1815 in Dakota City, Dakota County, Nebraska. Warrant number 25993 for his second military service in the War of 1812 was for 80 acres of land near Dakota City, and was patented Mar 13 1871. It is not known if he actually worked or farmed either parcel of land, or who the current owners are. He died on 27 December 1847 in Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio. Armstead was buried after 27 December 1847 in Hillsboro Cemetery, Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio. One history of Highland County (Ohio) mentions "Armstead Doggett came to Hillsboro about 1828, and as a skillful workman, established himself in a large and profitable business manufacturing saddles for men and women." [The date is apparently wrong, however, as other records indicate he and Mary married in Highland County in 1818] Another history states that "Col. A. Doggett named the tavern he opened in 1826 the "Eagle Hotel.' He named it after a local spring that was a favorite spot of social enjoyment. All of his children were born in the hotel." [no explanation for the title "Col.," as he was reportedly a Corporal.] Parents: James Doggett and Ann Brown. Spouse: Mary Allison. Irick's Company, then subsequently Company C, 2nd Division, Ohio Infantry, commanded by Col. George Morgan. He enlisted as a private, and mustered into service for three years on 8 Sep 1861 at Camp Chase, Ohio. He was appointed a First Lieutenant, but subsequently honorably discharged due to ill health. From 4 June 1863 to 30 April 1865 Cary was a Special Agent & Deputy Provost Marshall, 6th District of Ohio. He expected to be buried with them. My father's body should be moved to the lot he owned in Ohio, and buried with those he assembled to be near him in death." This book was published in 1938, and apparently he was reinterred some time later, as there is evidence he was moved from Colorado to this location sometime between 1938 and 1954.
