She said she only had a few moments to rescue her most prized possesion, a brand new set of dishes, so she gathered them all in her apron and ran outside. In her panic, she dropped them all on the ground once she was outside and, of course, they were broken. She spoke of huge family get-togethers when they would go up into the mountains, where the men cut trees for firewood for the winter. She said the women all got together and cooked big meals for the men when they finished for the day, cared for the children and visited, which she thoroughly enjoyed." After Ralph and Shirley were divorced, he converted his trucking licenses to hauling freight, and continued driving truck until his death in 1996. Ralph died in May 1996 at the age of 62 in Monte Vista, Del Norte County, Colorado. Ralph reportedly died of cancer, but type of cancer and any other details are not known.
