Samuel William Fitch was born on 31 August 1826 in Rockingham County, Virginia. The Bartholomew County Courthouse in Columbus, Indiana shows that Samuel W. Fitch was born 31 Aug 1826, although the stone on his grave at Mount Healthy Cemetery states his birthdate as 31 Jul 1826. The former date is being used here, as it was found on official records, so is presumed correct. He lived in Coshocton County, Ohio in 1829. Samuel Fitch and his family moved from Virginia to Ohio when he was three years old. He owned a grocery store after 1835 in Waymansville, Bartholomew County, Indiana. He later sold the grocery store to go into farming. Samuel lived in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana after 1835. His father died in 1835, and Samuel moved with his mother, brothers, and sister to a farm near Columbus. He was organizer of Mount Pleasant Church. in 1846. He owned a land grant of eighty acres in 1847 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. Before 1854 Samuel was an a farmer and a miller in Bartholomew County, Indiana. After 1856 Samuel was a Farmer in Bartholomew County, Indiana. He was one of first members of the Mount Healthy Church in 1866 in Mount Healthy, Bartholomew County, Indiana. He was elected as Bartholomew County Auditor in 1898 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. One source states, "He has also been prominent in public affairs and in 1898 he became the candidate of the Republican Party for the office of County Auditor, to which he was elected by a majority of two hundred and twenty eight votes, serving in that capacity in a most acceptable manner for four years and forty days. He has, however, never been an active politician in the sense of office seeking, but has always given his time and energies to his business interests."

It might be interesting to note that one of his employees as County Auditor was his son-in-law, Roseberry M. Dye. Samuel owned 280 acres of farmland about 1904 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. The Biographical Record of Bartholomew County states, "Mr Fitch is today the owner of two hundred and eighty acres of valuable land in Jackson and Ohio Townships, all of which is under cultivation. This he has improved and there is upon it very good buildings, well kept fences and all modern accessories. He also owns three pieces of town property in Columbus and also property at Mounty Healthy, Jackson Township." He was Methodist Episcopal Church about 1904 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. In 1904 he reportedly belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church, but no further information has been located as to length of membership or other details. It has been said of Samuel Fitch that "He belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church and is a man of unquestioned honor and integrity whose life has been free from the influences which leave a shadow upon character and warp one's best possibilities. In all life's relations he has been found true to the duty and trust reposed in him and was recognized as a trustworthy official as well as an honorable citizen." He died on 22 October 1913 in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana. By the time Samuel W. Fitch died in 1913, he had fathered eighteen children by two wives. When he died, both wives and eight of his children had already died, most of the children in infancy or early childhood. They moved to Waymansville, Bartholomew County, Indiana in 1854. He was the father of eighteen children. His second wife preceeded him in death, as did the first, but he had one sister living in Minnesota. The above information was provided to me by Shirley Ann Schottler (Bowman), who has done extensive research of this family, and I acknowledge and am thankful for her help.
Quoting below from information furnished to me by Shirley Ann Schottler (Bowman), who received it from Bartholomew County, Columbus, Indiana. It apparently was excerpted from a book entitled "Biographical Record of Bartholomew County, Indiana, 1904:
"Samual W. Fitch -- In a career that has been active and energetic, Mr. Fitch has won success, his farming interests now representing two hundred eighty acres of farming land. He has also been well known in connection with public affairs and at one time served as auditor of the county."
"Mr Fitch spent the first twenty years of his life upon the old home farm, assisting in its cultivation and improvement. He then left home, starting out upon an independent business career. In 1854 he embarked in merchandising in Waymansville Ohio township, now Jackson township, Indiana, following that pursuit for two years, after which he resumed farming. He has cleared two hundred acres of land in this county, rolling logs, teaming and doing other such work incident to the improvement of a new district. He lived here in pioneer times when this was a frontier district. He has seen many deer in the forests; also wolves and a great deal of small game. He has killed many turkeys and has thus supplied the family table with meat. He remembers when many of the houses were log cabins, when the land was not yet improved and roads were not yet laid out. As the county has advance, however, he has taken a deep and abiding interest in what has been accomplished and has assisted in large measure in movements for the general good."
"Mr. Fitch is today the owner of two hundred and eighty acres of valuable land in Jackson and Ohio townships, all of which is under cultivation. This he has improved and there is upon it very good buildings, well kept fences and all modern accessories. He also owns three pieces of town property in Columbus and also property at Mount Healthy, Jackson township. His life work has been honorable and has been attended with excellent results, for he has gained thereby a very creditable success. He has also been prominent in public affaire and in 1898 he became the candidate of the Republican party for the office of county auditor, to which he was elected by a majority of two hundred and twenty eight votes, serving in that capacity in a most acceptable manner for four years and forty days. He has, however, never been an active politician in the sense of office seeking, but has always given his time and energies to his business interests. He belongs to the Methodist Episcopal church and is a man of unquestioned honor and integrity whose life has been free from the influences which leave a shadow upon the character and warp one's best possibilities. In all life's relations he has been found true to the duty and trust reposed in him and was recognizeed as a trustworthy official as well as an honorable citizen."
