One source is quoted as saying of him, "His was an honorable business career and his entire life was in harmony with his professions and as a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church." William was baptised into the Methodist Episcopal Church, presumably somewhere in Bartholomew County, Indiana, but no details on that have been located. Some writings said they came from England with two of William's brothers and settled in Virginia, then moved to Coshoctin County, Ohio in 1829. However, a son, Samuel W.
