He served in the military during the Civil War in the Union Army between 1861 and May 1864. He served in the military during the Civil War as an officer in Company E, 29th Infantry Regiment, U. S. Colored Troops from 12 May 1864 to 30 July 1864. He signed up as a Captain and was killed in action at the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia. One source indicates that he died at the Battle of Antietum in 1862, but this is thought to be incorrect. On 26 Oct 1863, Governor Salomon received authority from the War Department to raise a regiment, battalion, or company of Colored soldiers in Wisconsin, and issued orders to that effect. There being so few African Americans in the state, little effort was made to raise a company until Dec 1863, when Colonel John A. Bross of Chicago, who had been commissioned to raise the Twenty-ninth Regiment United States Colored Troops, sent his recruiting agents into Wisconsin and succeeded in enlisting about two hundred and fifty able-bodied Colored men, who were credited to the state. The Twenty-ninth U. S. Colored Troops was organized at Quincy, Illinois in Apr 1864. In June of that year, the regiment joined Burnside's (Ninth) Corps before Petersburg, Virginia. After the Petersburg Mine Explosion on Jul 30, Colonel Bross led the Twenty-ninth in a charge against enemy lines. He led his men far in advance of any other federal units. Seeing the hopelessness of the attempt to storm Cemetery Hill, he ordered his men to fall back. Just at that time, Bross was struck by a musket ball in the temple and killed, wrapped in the colors of the regiment. In this attack his regiment lost two hundred enlisted men killed, wounded, or missing. The Twenty-ninth remained at Petersburg through the remainder of 1864, and took part in such engagements as the Weldon Railroad, Poplar Grove Church, and Hatcher's Run. In 1865, the Twenty-ninth took part in the Bermuda Hundred near Richmond and the Appomattox Campaign in April which ended the Civil War. In May 1865, the Twenty-ninth was stationed along the Rio Grande River in Texas, where it remained until the regiment was mustered out on 9 Nov 1865. William died of wounds received at the Battle of Petersburg during the Civil War. on 30 July 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia. William Henry Flint and his son William are believed to have served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and are reported to have served at least part of the time in the same unit, although this fact and the specific unit are still in question. They are also reported to have been killed in action in the same battle, Antietum in 1862 by one source and Petersburg in 1864 by another source. It is pretty well determined that William Henry did die in combat, but his son William W. is reported to have moved to Omaha, Nebraska Territory after the war, so his death of war wounds seems very doubtful. Obviously, considerable research remains to be done to determine the facts. Parents: David Flint and Mary Churchill. Spouse: Emeline Vickery. Emeline Vickery and Capt.
