He became a Midshipman in 1812 at the age of 7. He entered active service in 1816 serving in the Mediterranean and Pacific. Promoted to lieutenant in 1825, he passed two years of study in 1827 and served on several ships until taking a leave of absence about 1831 to get married. He served as Captain of a company of Florida volunteers, and afterward as Commander of an armed steamer. He was a Commander in the U. S. Navy in 1841 and served as Executive Officer of a frigate during the Mexican War. In 1849 he was senior member of the Joint Commission of the Army and Navy appointed to explore California and Oregon. He was Superintendant of the U. S. Naval Academy from 1853 to 1857. He held several sea commands, then saw combat with the Union Navy during the Civil War as a Captain. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1862 and took part in most major naval battles of the Civil War. He then commanded the European Squadron until 1867, and retired from the Navy in 1873.
