John Hackleman died of drowning about 20 years of age in the south fork of the Yadkin River in Iredell County, North Carolina, United States. He and a friend were said to have been pursuing a thief who had stolen two of his father's horses. Upon arriving at the ford of the Yadkin River, the two were unable to get help crossing and the stream was quite swollen from recent rains. The two went into the stream, but the current took them downstream and John was drowned about 10 miles NE of Statesville Courthouse while his companion survived.
