After 1860 he was a Methodist minister in Colorado. He was said to have been among the first to preach the gospel in southern Colorado and had "a wonderful experience" there among the first settlers of that state. He rode hundresds of miles, often over the summits of the snow clad mountains. His young son Irving was with him at first, but he sent the boy home in the fall. In the springtime, he settled on a ranch near where Colorado Springs is now located, and then sent for the entire family. William died on 11 August 1871 in Colorado City, Pueblo County, Colorado.
