He owned 242 acres of land called "John's Fancy" in January 1788 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He bought this land from his father, then deeded a part of it to his son, Joseph. He a founder of the town in 1794 in Salisbury, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The town of Salisbury was laid out by Joseph Markley in 1794. Douglas Baker was the surveyor. He laid out the original 56 lots. He sold 18 lots on which buildings were erected up to 1802. He donated the lot for the first schoolhouse. The highest price he received for any lot was $10.00, which was for lot number 54 where the current firehouse now stands. Joseph owned 1500 acres of land previously owned by his father from 1804 to 1815 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He bought his father's land in 1804, most likely from his mother but this is not verified. He sold it in 1815. He owned the Trickle Farm after October 1814 in Ashland, Ashland County, Ohio.
