He became one of William Penn's first purchasers in England by receiving the grant of 250 acres of land, to be laid out in the province, the deeds of lease and release for the tract being signed by William Penn himself on Mar 3 1681 in his London land office. John accompanied his brother Thomas to Pennsylvania. John's grant of land was surveyed to him on Oct 25 1683 in Marple Township, and there he and Thomas proceeded at once to make their settlement. Fox and some of his followers believed in a literal interpretation of every statement in the Bible. When they read Isaiah 20:2, which stated that the prophet was to walk in Jerusalem "naked and barefoot," they endeavored to approach the cities of England in the same manner. The civil authorities were more concerned over their personal "revelations" than they were over their understanding of the scriptures, so they threw them in jail for "preaching against sin in the streets." Lawrence is listed as having served one such sentence, but the court record does not say whether it was for the exposition of his text or himself.
