He served in the military during the Civil War as a Captain in the 1st Vermont Infantry Volunteers in 1861. He served in the military during the Civil Was as a Lt. Col. in the 1st U. S. Sharpshooters at the Battle of Malvern Hill on 1 July 1862 in Virginia. Four soldiers were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their heroism during this battle. Among these four was Lieutenant Colonel William Ripley who, at a critical moment during the battle brought up two regiments, which he led against the enemy himself. Lieutenant Colonel Ripley was severely wounded in this action. Others who earned Medals of Honor in this battle were Private William Osborne, Private Peter Rafferty, and First Lieutenant John Tobin. William served in the military during the Civil War as a Major General in the 1st Vermont Frontier Forces in 1864. He was finally issued the Congressional Medal of Honor that he earned in July 1862 on 11 March 1893. There was no reason found for it taking 33 years to be given to him. He died on 16 December 1905. One source indicates that he died at the age of 99, but this is not documented. William was buried after 16 December 1905 in Evergreen Cemetery, Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont.
