Alfred Schottler was born in 1883. Alfred's death certificate, signed at the time of death, lists his year of birth as 1881. He died in 1927 at the age of 44. According to a notebook that his mother kept, Alfred died in 1927 of a stroke. He was reportedly attended to by a doctor from Sep 15 to Nov 15 1927, and the stated cause of death was "general paralysis of the insane." Diagnosis was confirmed at the time by clinical and blood test, and the Wasserman Test (a commonly used test for Syphillis). He died at St. Erne Sanitarium, reportedly at age 46, but that was based on the 1881 year of birth put on his death certificate. Alfred's death certificate lists his mother as Josephine, so this could be her nickname. Parents: Joseph Francis Schottler.

He was buried after 22 April 1952 in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California. Francis was an Insurance salesman. Shirley Ann (Schottler) Bowman states quite a few years later, "I remember F. H. as a child, because he had vinding machines and always had candy for us kids. He was an insurance salesman and living with his second wife, Sarah Hagen, when I knew him. Daddy and he had not remained close because Daddy said that he had dated Sarah even when Minnie was ill and near her death." Parents: Joseph Francis Schottler and Frances Matilda Roberts.

Joseph Francis Schottler was born in 1846 in Baltimore, Maryland. His date of birth has also been found as 1847. Between 1870 and 1875 he was a Butcher in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. Between 1876 and 1888 he was a Realtor in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. Between 1877 and 1878 Joseph was a Clerk in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. Between 1878 and 1879 he was a Poultry Salesman in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He appeared in the census in 1880 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He is shown in the Census as residing in the 2nd Ward, and with a middle initial of "E." He appears to have been living in a boarding house at the time of the census, and is shown as "single," although "widower" would have been more accurate. In 1880 Joseph was a Real Estate Agent in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. In 1891 he was a Coal dealer in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. In 1893 he was a Realtor in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. In 1905 Joseph was a Realtor in San Rafael, Marin County, California. Although involved in other professions from time to time, Joseph Schottler primarily worked in real estate much of the time, always returning to it after trying other things. He died on 25 February 1914 at the age of 68 in Redwood City, San Mateo County, California. He was cremated after 25 February 1914 in Oakland, Alameda County, California. He was cremated, and his ashes were never claimed by the family. At last report, they were still stored in the "urn room" at Mountain View Cemetery and Oakland Crematorium. This ads further mystery to this couple, as his wife Frances' life is also full of mystery, and it is almost as if she disappeared without a trace. Joseph's great granddaughter, Carol Ruth (Schottler) Ewing, helping with family research and writing to her sister, Shirley Ann (Schottler) Bowman many years later, wrote: Don (her husband) and I went to Oakland today and stopped in at the Mountain View Cemetery and Crematorium to see if Joseph Schottler was there. He was, as you can see by the enclosed copy of a page out of a huge leather volume. His ashes were never picked up by the family and remain stored in the "urn room" as you can see on the right of the document. It's interesting that "Minister" was crossed out and "Mrs. Winter, Christian Science" is there. He is "warehoused" somewhere in the vast archives and not placed in a niche. It is a beautiful cemetery. The Oakland Hills fire (a "runaway fire in 1996) damaged only the eucalyptus trees on the edges of it, and didn't hurt the many huge old trees on the grounds. The chapel was so pretty--the architect was the same woman who designed William Randolph Hearst's Castle. The lady who helped us was very helpful. We had the date of his burial (burial?), otherwise I don't think she could have found the record, so I guess it wouldn't be possible to find Frankie if she were there. I looked up Phthisis (on the document) in my medical dictionery and it said it was an old term for tuberculosis infection or any disease characterized by emaciation and loss of strength, especially of the lungs." Parents: Joseph Francis Schottler and Adelaide Ann Brockman.

Spouse: Frances Matilda Roberts. Frances Matilda Roberts and Joseph Francis Schottler were married on 21 May 1871 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. Children were: Francis Harrison Schottler.

Children were: Schottler, Alfred Schottler.

Lester Harrison Schottler was born on 1 November 1903 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He was a member of the Lone Scouts of America after 18 November 1917 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He had been a Lone Scout as a boy, and he remained a loyal supporter of the Lone Scouts throughout most of his life. Certificate (membership) number was 241987. About 1960 he was a Bus Driver in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California. He loved the printing business and was thought of by many to have printer's ink in his veins, but for the sake of earning a living for his family he worked for seventeen years as a bus driver for Palo Alto City Lines, later Peninsula Transit in Palo Alto, California. Before 12 November 1969 Lester was a Printer in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California. Lester Schottler's first love was printing. During the depression, he lost his print shop in Redwood City and took a job as a bus driver, but in his later years he returned to printing, running a small print shop initially in South Palo Alto, and later out of the garage in his home. He died on 12 November 1969 at the age of 66 in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California. Death occurred at 4:00 PM at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, 751 South Bascom Avenue in San Jose. Cause of death was listed as "cardiogenic shock, caused by myocardial infarction." He was buried on 14 November 1969 at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California. Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov 14 1969, at 2:00 PM, at the chapel of Tinney & Sons Funeral Home in Palo Alto. He is buried at Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto, alongside his wife of more than 39 years, Ruth Eva Markley. It is believed by some that Lester Schottler may have been a twin at birth, but the other one was stillborn. If it is true, no documentation or other evidence of it has been located to verify it. Verification is made even more difficult by the fact that he was born in San Francisco in 1903, and most of the city records went up in flames during the earthquake that destroyed the city in April 1906.

Shirley Ann (Schottler) Bowman, writing many years later, said, "I have such fond memories of my Dad. He was a hard worker, a most honest man, and a good father to his kids. All of the kids at school used to tell me how lucky I was to have a Dad like him, as he was always so good to the kids that rode his bus." David Cann (Louise's son) remembers him as "the most purely honest person I have ever known. He once worried himself terribly over the fact that he mistakenly overcharged a lady by $1 for a printing order. Despite the fact the amount was small, he phoned her to make sure she was home, then got into the car and drove to her house to personally return the dollar to her. It was nothing more than a very minor math error on the invoice, and the amount was small, but he felt it was his error and he had to make it good right away. That is just the way he was, honest and truthful in every way that I was ever aware of." Parents: Francis Harrison Schottler and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Paulsen.
