She was the first Cradle Roll Superintendent and was a charter member of the Women's Missionary society at the newly organized University Heights Church and Sunday School. While there, he was asked to talk about America, its advantages, and the conditions there. The small audience was very impressed with his speech and talk of it reached some of the surrounding villages. He was asked to speak in several of these villages, and spoke even more boldly about "the land of the free and the home of the brave." John talked about the U. S. government, rights and privileges, and stated that the German people should adopt such a government. When the German authorities heard about this, they came after him, threatening to kill him. While they were searching for him, a man in the neighborhood died. His body was to be shipped to Norway for burial. The man was buried privately and John Stade was placed in the casket with holes augured in the bottom. He was shipped to Norway inside the casket, accompanied by one of the dead man's friends.
