At the age of 3 she (Mary Matilda Curl) moved with her parents to Henry County. Iowa, near the town of Salem. James and Mary lived in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois before they returned to Earlham, Iowa, where they lived 22 years.Mary was a
birthright member of the Society of Friends Church. In 1898 Mary was united with the Presbyterian Church at Fort Madison and her husband became a member of this church in 1901. There were six children born to this union, only 3 growing to adulthood.
