His first marriage was to Margaret Catherine Abeln on 24 April 1861 at the German St. Joseph Church in St. Louis City, Missouri. Margaret Catherine Ablen, daughter of Johann Bernard Abeln and Anna Catharina Herbers, was born circa 1837 in Prussia, and died between 1873-1878 in Lawrence County, Tennessee.

- Henry Cordes was born in November 1864 at Mudcreek. He died in November 1864 at Mudcreek, and was buried on 19 November 1864 in St. Libory Church Cemetery, Mudcreek (now St. Libory), St. Clair County, Illinois.
- John Xavier Cordes

His second marriage was to Maria Catharina (Schmidt) Mueller on 16 September 1879 at SS. Peter & Paul Church in St. Louis City, Missouri. Maria Catharina (Schmidt) Mueller, daughter of Johann George Schmidt and Anna Maria Elisabeth Rose, was born on 14 February 1836 in Effeln, Westfalen, Germany. She died on 2 May 1918 at St. Charles, St. Charles County, Missouri, and was buried on 4 May 1918 in St. Peter Church Cemetery, St. Charles, St. Charles County, Missouri.
