Some Duncan Families of Eastern Tennessee Before 1800 - Section I, Continued

7.  Rice Duncan, born about 1743; married Elizabeth -------- about 1769; died about 1777.

Rice "Durroon" signed a petition 5 July 1776 with others to the State of NC that they had purchased land from the Cherokee Indians in the Watauga area, believing it to be in VA, but found it to be below the survey line, and were seeking annexation to NC ("The Annals of TN to the End of the 18th Century" by J.G.M. Ramsey, pg. 134-9, from Bill Brown; "Overmountain Men" by Alderman, pg. 57, from Dorothy Davis Smith). Rice Duncan lived on Knob Creek, Washington Co. TN, by 1775 ("Dawn of TN Valley and TN History" by Williams; do not have copy of this reference). On 10 April 1776, Charles Robertson of Washington District NC sold to John McMahen, 640 acres on Knob Creek near the head and next to a corner of an entry that McMahen bought from Rice Duncan. This document was recorded in "Land Records of Washington Co. Book 1," pg. 48-49; copy from Charles Gordon from a personal visit to the Washington Co. TN Courthouse; this land book was not in the same series as other deed books in that county and he has been told the book has since been moved to the TN archives. The book may possibly be the "Watauga Purchase Book" which contains land grants in TN and is on microfilm. Another document from that book on pg. 32 was a patent on 19 Nov. 1775 for 320 acres to Joseph Duncan (9.). Rice Duncan died about 1777 while fighting Cherokee Indians during a campaign to the Long Island in the Holston River ("a man by the name of Duncan" without giving his first name in "History of Southwest VA, 1746-1786, Washington Co., 1777-1800" by Summers, pg. 244-5; "Journal of the House of Delegates, Virginia" for Elizabeth Duncom, May 8, 1777, and June 16, 1777, pg. 49, 78, 79; from Mrs. Alberta Westby).

Nothing has been found to prove the first name of the Duncan who was killed in 1777, but Rice Duncan (7.) was in the area, and one Rice Duncan had a son Joseph (7.1.) named in the will of Roseannah Stevenson (1.); this same Joseph (7.1.) appears to be the son of Elizabeth, whose husband was killed in 1777 and who was left with five small children, according to the Journal of the House of Delegates of VA.

Elizabeth was born 1730-40 (if on 1830 census) or 1740-50 (suggestion of Charles Gordon 17 Dec. 1990). Elizabeth settled on the south side of the Watauga River where it joins the Holston River in TN by 1794 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 6, pg. 522). The chain carriers for the survey of her land in 1794 were Joseph and Robert Duncan, who were probably her sons (7.1. and 7.4.) of the same name (NC Land Grants in TN, Book 83, pg. 415, file 1203, Grant #1157, from Alberta Westby). She had a ferry across the Holston River by 1803 ("Greene Co. TN Minutes, Court of Common Pleas, 1797-1807" by Houston, pg. 151, minutes pg. 68, 29 July 1803). As yet, there is no proof of Elizabeth's maiden name.

Elizabeth's son Joseph Duncan (7.1.) had a female age 90-100 in his household in Blount Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 269) which may have been his mother; however, a descendant, Mr. Charles Gordon of MD (address not included here), believes Elizabeth had died long before (Mr. Gordon's letter of 17 Dec. 1990). There is no proof of the identity of this female.

Mr. Charles Gordon, wrote in Nov. 1978, "Our family tradition stated her (Elizabeth's) maiden name was Dodge. We have never been able to document this. There is no evidence of a Dodge family at this time in either West North Carolina or Tennessee, and I have since discounted the theory her name was Dodge - a mistake in our family account." About one mile from U.S. Highway 11E and five to six miles north of Johnson City, Washington Co. TN, are graves for "Jesse Duncan, first white man that died in Tenn. Killed by the Indians about 1765. Erected by the Public. (On reverse: 9-18-1909)" and for "Elizabeth Dodge Duncan - From Duncan Cemetery - Date removed 7-9-52" (data from Oscar H. Hurt, 1963). The graves were removed from the Galloway Cemetery in 1952 when Boone Lake was created (info. of Mr. Charles Gordon). However, see also Jesse Duncan (8.14) listed as son of Charles Duncan, who might possibly be the Jesse Duncan in the grave.

A letter written about 1953 from Mrs. L.W. McCown of TN (address not included here) to Mr. George O. Duncan, suggested that Elizabeth's maiden name was Cobb; Mrs. McCown said she believed "that all these Washington County Duncans are descendants from Jesse and Elizabeth Cobb Duncan, sister to Arthur Cobb of Sullivan County, Tenn."). Mr. Gordon feels that Elizabeth was not a Cobb, nor has any proof been found.

Children of Rice and Elizabeth (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 6, pg. 94):

7.1.  Joseph Duncan, born about 1770; married Lydia --------; died about Dec. 1838, in Blount Co. TN (Blount Co. TN Will Book 1, pg. 32; from John C. Crawford to Nancy Reba Roy). Lydia was born about 1770; she was in Blount Co. TN 1840 (pg. 74).

Joseph was in Blount Co. TN on 23 Jan. 1821 when he sold his share of the land from his mother, Elizabeth (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 17, pg. 362). He was in Blount Co. TN on 2 May 1832 when William Stevenson made a relinquishment bond in Washington Co. TN (Wash. Co. TN Deed Book 20, pg. 146, recorded 15 March 1834) that Stevenson would release his right to land where he lived, formerly owned by John Duncan (1.) on the fall branch of Horse Creek, to take effect at his death or when he left the place, and he would not benefit from the statute of limitation on the part that Joseph Duncan had. He was in Blount Co. TN on 19 March 1838 when he sold some land, on the Fall Branch, formerly the property of John Duncan, to William Stevenson (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 22, pg. 151). Joseph was in Blount Co. TN 1830 (pg. 269). He had an unidentified female age 90-100 in his household, who may be his mother Elizabeth; however, see the comments of Charles Gordon under Rice Duncan (7.).

According to the will of Roseannah Stevenson in 1825 (see John Duncan 1.), John's land was left to Joseph Duncom Junior of Rice Duncom and Rice Duncom Jr and Marvel Duncom sons of Joseph Duncom Sen. This will indicated that Roseannah's first husband John Duncan (1.) had a brother Rice Duncan Sr. (who had a son Joseph) and a brother Joseph Duncan Sr. (who had sons Rice and Marvel). Part of John's land was in the hands of Joseph Duncan of Blount Co. TN after Roseannah's death; therefore this Joseph Duncan of Blount Co. TN must be the son of Rice Duncan Sr. Since this Joseph Duncan was deeded land by his mother Elizabeth, this indicated Elizabeth's husband was Rice Duncan who was killed by the Indians. Although no grantor deeds have been found for Rice Duncan (Jr.) and Marvel Duncan for their part of John's land, see Rice Duncan (9.1.) and Marvel Duncan (9.2.), both in Warren Co. KY at the same time as a Joseph Duncan (listed as 9.).

Joseph's will, probated 7 Jan. 1839, named his wife Lydia Duncan and the following children:

7.1.1.  Marvel Duncan, born 1796 TN; married 1st Sarah Colville (Index to War of 1812 Pensions); married 2nd Mary Kirkpatrick or Kilpatrick (b. 1804 TN) on 29 April 1830 in Blount Co. TN (data from George O. Duncan). Marvel died 25 Aug. 1863 on Cane Creek, Walker Co. GA; Mary died 16 Aug. 1884 in Waterville, GA (Index to War of 1812 Pensions).

Marvel was in the war of 1812 from 10 Jan. to 14 July 1814 in Capt. Joseph Duncan's company of TN Militia and in the Creek Indian War in Capt. Paris's Co. from 4 July to 1 Oct. 1836; his widow Mary applied for a pension and bounty land in 1878 when she lived in Walker Co. GA (Index to War of 1812 Pensions).

Marvel was in Blount Co. TN 1830 (pg. 269) and went to Walker Co. GA before 1837 ("Monroe Co. TN Records 1820-1870" by Reba Bayless Boyer, Vol. 2, pg. 48, Death Notices from Hiwassee Patriot, published Athens, TN, II-16; and Vol. 2, pg. 93, Monroe Co. Circuit Court records 1837, pg. 350); he was in Walker Co. GA 1850 (pg. 437, #1300) with family:

7.1.1.1.  Marvel L. Duncan, born 1824 TN; married Susan A. -------- (b. 1828 NC); lived in household near his father in 1850 (pg. 437, #1302). One Marvel Duncan died by 8 October 1868, James Wardlaw was the Administrator ("Births, Marriages, Deaths, Legal Notices Walker Co. GA for the years 1892-1896" with Misc. Information 1868-1869, by Griffith, pg. 115). Child on census:

                        7.1.1.1.1.  William L. Duncan, born 1849 GA (1850 census).

7.1.1.2.  Lafayette Duncan, born 1834 GA.

7.1.1.3.  Hugh Duncan, born 1836 GA.

                  7.1.1.4.  Sarah A. Duncan, born 1838 GA.

7.1.2.  Sally Ann Duncan; married Isaac Campbell on 14 May 1818 in Blount Co. TN ("Ansearchen News" Vol. 27, 1980, loose marriage bonds; from Evelyn Sigler) or Andrew Campbell on 31 Aug. 1820 in Blount Co. TN ("Early East TN Marriages" by Sistler; from Pat Boyd and Shirley Harper). The family has not been traced.

7.1.3.  Elizabeth Duncan, born 1801 TN; married Moses Scruggs (b. 1785 NC) on 23 April 1830 in Blount Co. TN. Moses D. Scrogs was one of the executors named in Joseph's will. Moses Scruggs was indexed in Blount Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 275) and 1840 (pg. 74). The family was listed in Blount Co. TN 1850 (pg. 14, #187) as Moses Scroggs 65 NC, Eliza 49 TN, Mary 64 NC, Jane 66, Peter 19 VA, and Sarah Honston 2 GA.

7.1.4.  Robert Duncan, born 1805 TN; probably lived with his brother Marvel Duncan (7.1.1.) in Blount Co. TN 1830; was one of the executors named in Joseph's will probated 1839; married Mary -------- (b. 1815 TN) before 1840. His wife's name was given as Mary Ann in an 1844 deed (Buchanan Co. MO Deed Book B, pg. 77).

Robert was in Crawford Twp., Buchanan Co. MO, in 1840 (pg. 158); Justice of the Court 1843 (White Co. TN Will Book C, pg. 162); and in Washington Twp., Buchanan Co. MO, in 1850 (pg. 21, #267) with children. (see "Biographical Sketches of the Bartlett Marshall Duncan and Henry Utz Families" by W.H. Utz, 1936.) Robert died by 8 July 1854 when Robert McDow and wife Julia deeded land to Joseph B., Marcas A., and Louisa J?. Duncan, heirs of Robert Duncan decd; McDow had given a bond to Robert Duncan on 2 May 1850 for the land for which Robert's widow Mary had now paid (Buchanan Co. MO Deed Book K, pg. 585). In January, 1854, a suit was filed in the MO Supreme Court by Mary Duncan, administrator of Robert, against Marquis D. LaFayette Duncan (7.1.4.2. or 7.1.5.2.). ("MO SGA Journal" Winter, 1984, pg. 16, Cases in the Supreme Court of MO 1853-54, File #14, Box 65.) Children from the census:

7.1.4.1.  Joseph B. Duncan, born 1842 MO (census).

7.1.4.2.  Marcus A. or Marquis DeLafayette Duncan, born 1843 MO (census).

7.1.4.3.  William Duncan, born 1849 MO (census); possibly died before 1854.

                  7.1.4.4.  Louisa J?. Duncan, born 1850-1854.

7.1.5.  Bartlett Marshall Duncan, born 1 Dec. 1806 TN, probably Blount Co.; married Rachel Thompson on 27 Sept. 1827 in Blount Co. TN; married 2nd Amanda Melvina Lawrence on 26 Sept. 1833 in St. Clair Co. AL, by John S. Willson JP (from Helen Henson); died 19 Oct. 1885 in Buchanan Co. MO. Rachel died 27 Feb. 1831. Amanda was born 10 Dec. 1814 ("Utz Gen." below); at age 90 she lived with her son John H. (Buchanan Co. History below); she died 19 Dec. 1905 Buchanan Co. MO. Both Bartlett and Amanda are buried in the Sparta or Old Sparta Cemeteries, Buchanan Co. MO (cemetery records in St. Joseph Public Library, Buchanan Co. MO, from Helen Henson). "Biographical Sketches of the Bartlett Marshall Duncan and Henry Utz Families" by W.H. Utz, 1936, gave the 2nd marriage date as 10 Sept. 1833 in Blount Co. TN.

Bartlett Marshall was in Blount Co. TN 1830 (pg. 269) as "Barkly Duncan"; he was elected a Justice of the Peace for Cherokee Co. AL on 9 April 1836; served in Donaldson's Mounted Company of AL Militia from 25 June 1836 to 3 Sept. 1836 in the Creek War, and built the first cotten gin and compress in the Cherokee Purchase of AL ("Cherokee Co. AL Heritage" Vol. IV, #1, Jan. 1975; from Helen Henson). He has not been located on the 1840 census. His son John H. Duncan (7.1.5.6.), born 1840 Cherokee Co. AL, said Bartlett was a Colonel in the AL State Militia ("History of Buchanan Co. and St. Joseph, MO"). On 15 Oct. 1842 he applied for Bankruptcy in Cherokee Co. AL and his property was sold 17 Aug. 1843 (Vol. 15, "AL Records" by Gandrud, Cherokee Co. AL Applications in Bankruptcy, pg. 52, 71, from Evelyn Sigler).

Bartlett Marshall went to Buchanan Co. MO about 1845 (1877 "Buchanan Co. MO Patrons of the Atlas" from "MO Pioneers" Vol. 2, Feb. 1968, pg. 63; this source also said he was born in Washington Co. TN); he was in Center Twp., Buchanan Co. MO, in 1850 (pg. 72, #1004) as Bartlett Duncan 45 TN, Amanda 36 TN, and children.

The 1830 Blount Co. TN census (pg. 269) for "Barkly Duncan" shows an inconsistency. The household consisted of one male 15-20, one male 30-40, one male 40-50, and one male 50-60; one female 10-15, two females 15-20, and one female 40-50. Bartlett was born in 1806, and would have been age 20-30 in 1830. The data given here is from the printed 1830 census.

Children of Bartlett Marshall Duncan (data from "Biographical Sketches of the Bartlett Marshall Duncan and Henry Utz Families" by W.H. Utz, 1936; see that source for later generations; additional information from Mrs. Helen Henson of MO (address not included here)):

Lived on Watauga River until 1831 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 19 pg. 495); not located 1840 census. He may be the Rice Duncan indexed as a soldier in the War of 1812 in Bunch's Regiment (1814), E. TN Militia (data from Mrs. Mildred Hofer).

--   In Sullivan Co. TN 1850 (pg. 80) a Clora Duncan (female) was in the household of Cornelias Trusler b. 1804 VA, Elizabeth b. 1805 TN, Elizabeth b. 1836 TN; Susan Motron b. 1785 TN; and Clora Duncan b. 1769 TN. It is possible this was the widow of Rice Duncan, but there is NO PROOF. Mr. Charles Gordon suggested that Clora Duncan was the widow of John Duncan who died in 1811 in Granville Co. NC, since the name Clora is very unusual.

One John Duncan married Chloe Moore on 2 Nov. 1793 in Granville Co. NC as his second wife; his first wife was Nancy Coward whom he married on 8 Aug. 1763 in Granville Co. NC. John Duncan Sr. died about January, 1811, when his widow, Chloe Duncan, refused administration of his estate in February, 1811, and petitioned for her dower in his manor house and 160 acres on Tabbs Creek; John Duncan, Henry Duncan of Johnson Co. NC, and Seamore Duncan of Orange Co. NC were bondsmen for his estate on 7 May 1813 (Granville Co. NC Court Minutes 1810-1813, Feb. 1811; from "Granville Co. NC Abstract of Court Minutes, 1746-1820" by Gwynn, pg. 238; also "Guardian Accounts, 1810-1856, Granville Co. NC", author not given; both from Evelyn Sigler; also "Granville Co. NC Abstract of Wills and Estate Records 1808-1833" Vol. II, by Zae Hargett Gwynn; also copies from original court records, book and page not given, from Charles Gordon). This family is being researched by Mr. W.A. Duncan of KS (address not included here) and Mr. Joseph M. Duncan of GA (address not included here). The family of Ambrose Harrison Duncan in Granville Co. NC by 1771 is being researched by Mr. Charles O. Duncan of NC (address not included here).

The following children are brothers and sisters. It is not yet known whether they are children of Rice (7.2.) or of Jesse (7.3.), or if there were more brothers and sisters. (See 1913 letter of George Rice Duncan 7.2.4.6. in Appendix.) However, this set of children is listed under Rice Duncan (7.2.) to separate them from the other probable children of Rice (7.2.) or Jesse (7.3.) Duncan.

7.2.1.  Lucinda Duncan, born 3 July 1801 TN; married Aquilla Parker on 3 or 8 Feb. 1824 in Washington Co. TN (Washington Co. marriage records show "Lucinda Dun" marriage date 3 Feb. 1824; Family Bible Records shows marriage 8 Feb. 1824 near Bristol); died 19 May 1865 Marion Co. IA; buried Pleasantville, Iowa. Aquilla Parker was born 11 Dec. 1793 (Bible), died 7 Feb. 1851 in Sullivan Co. TN. (Information from Mrs. Alberta Westby). Aquilla Parker was in Washington Co. TN 1830 (pg. 201); and in Sullivan Co. TN 1840 (pg. 124) and 1850 (pg. 102, #1294).

The family bible of Aquilla and Lucinda Parker was located by Mrs. Westby in the possession of her aunt by marriage, Mrs. Eddath Dyer, who was in her late 80's in 1978. Mrs. Dyer also had family bibles of Elizabeth Parker Dyer, and of Peter Aquilla Dyer and Martha Hardin Dyer (Mrs. Westby's grandparents). The Parker bible contains the birth and marriage dates of Aquilla Parker and Lucinda Parker, the birth and death dates of Rice Duncan (7.2.4.), the birth date of S.V. Duncan (7.2.4.2.) and several of the Woods and Dyer relatives, as well as dates for the children of Aquilla and Lucinda Parker. (See Appendix)

(line of Mrs. Alberta Westby of IL (address not included here)). Mrs. Westby wrote in 1978 that "A Dyer relative in Iowa who once lived with her grandmother Eliz. Parker Dyer (Mrs. John) said that she remembered that her grandmother said - 'We grew from beans as we had Bean relatives' - She also said that Eliz. said she named one of her sons Melvin Dyer after 'Uncle Johnny Melvin'." Samuel Spurgeon was born 1802 Washington Co. TN (census), the son of William Spurgeon and his 1st wife Jesse Gray (info of Larry Spurgin); Samuel died Sept. 1851 or 1853. TN 1840 ("Harland" on pg. 141) next to John Snapp, father-in-law of Rice Duncan (7.2.4.); Ellis Harland apparently died 1841-50, when his widow Mary lived in Sullivan Co. TN (pg. 120) in 1850 with their children.

--   Ellis Harland Duncan may have been named for an Ellis Harlan, born about 1734 in Chester Co. PA, of Guilford Co. NC in 1764, a Quaker ("Genealogy of the Harlan Family" by Alpheus H. Harlan, about 1920; extract from Charles Gordon). No Ellis Harlin or Harland has been located in 1771-1774 Surry Co. NC tax lists; 1778, 1801, 1814, or 1819 Washington Co. TN tax lists; 1796 or 1812 Sullivan Co. TN tax lists; 1830 Washington or Sullivan Co. TN census. Mary Duncan who married John Bowman (7.3.1.) and lived in Barren Co. KY in 1850 named a son Ellis Harlin Bowman (7.3.1.4.). There may or may not be a close family connection to the 1850 Barren Co. KY (pg. 452) family of Thomas Harlan 64 VA, Elizabeth 61 VA, and Amanda 16 KY, who had an unidentified Sarah E. Duncan age 14 born KY in their household. Mr. Charles Gordon suggested that Sarah E. Duncan may in fact be Sarah E. Baker, granddaughter of John Snapp (see 7.2.4.) but there is NO PROOF.

Ellis Harlan Duncan died many years before 1913; he had sons John and Richard who went to KY near "Glassco"; his oldest daughter Fannie married a Hall, both dead before 1913; the other daughter married a Ford, she died without children. (Geo. R. Duncan letter 1913; see 7.2.4.6.; see Appendix)

                        Children from 1850 census:

7.2.3.1.  Jonathan Duncan, born 1831 TN; went to KY.

7.2.3.2.  Francis Duncan, born 1833 TN; married -------- Hall; died before 1913.

7.2.3.3.  Elizabeth Duncan, born 1836 TN.

7.2.3.4.  Richard Duncan, born 1838 TN; went to KY.

7.2.3.5.  Sarah Duncan, born 1840 TN; married -------- Ford; died without children.

7.2.4.  Rice Duncan, born 18 March 1813 (bible record); married Ellenor H. Snapp (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 12, pg. 156); died 17 Oct. 1847 (Bible records of Lucinda Duncan who married Aquilla Parker, 7.2.1.). Ellenor was born 1819 TN, the daughter of John Snapp and his second wife Nancy Sullins (info of Charles Gordon). Rice Duncan made an agreement 2 Aug. 1843 with John Snapp for the maintenance of John and Nancey Snapp during their lifetimes and also the maintenance of Mary G. Baker and Sarah E. Baker until they reached 18 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 13, pg. 395). The Baker children have not been traced; they may be children of John Snapp's daughter Emmaline Baker (info of Charles Gordon); however see Mr. Gordon's comments on Sarah E. Duncan (under 7.2.3.) in the household of Thomas Harlan in Barren Co. KY in 1850 (pg. 452).

Rice lived on Sinking Creek on the north side of the Holston River in Sullivan Co. TN in 1838, but also had land on Gilliham's Branch of Sinking Creek and on south side of Holston River in Sullivan Co. TN (Sullivan Co. Deed Book 12, pg. 156; Book 13, pg. 393; and Book 14, pg. 104). He was in Sullivan Co. TN 1840 (pg. 141) next to John Snapp; Ellis Harland Duncan (7.2.3.) lived on the other side of John Snapp. Rice's widow and children were in Sullivan Co. TN 1850 (pg. 120) one household from Mary Duncan, widow of Ellis Harland Duncan (7.2.3.) as Ellen (no last name) 31 TN and children.

Ellen H. Duncan, widow of Rice, mortgaged her share of the land on Sinking Creek to John Yoakley 10 Oct. 1856 since she was in debt to R.P. Gott and James A. Wells (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 19, pg. 134). John and B.L. Yoakley were witnesses to deeds to Rice Duncan in 1843 and 1845 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 13, pg. 393, 395; and Book 16, pg. 320). Jesse Duncan (7.3.) lived with Charles Yokeley in 1850.

Mr. Charles Gordon said in his letter of 5 Nov. 1978 that Alfred Duncan (7.3.3.) was a gunsmith and taught his brother Rice the trade.

The heirs of Rice Duncan were involved in a Chancery Court suit in 1869 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 24, pg. 48) which involved, among others, Joseph Birdwell (see also Lydia Duncan who married Benjamin Birdwell, 7.3.3.1.). Children of Rice Duncan (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 24, pg. 1, 48):

7.2.4.1.  John Snapp Duncan, born 1838 TN. He went to IL before the Civil War and was killed in a railroad accident about 28 years before 1913; his widow lived at Bluff City, IL; they had son McClelland who lived in MO and daughter Eleanor who married -------- Burke. (Geo. R. Duncan letter 1913; see 7.2.4.6.)

7.2.4.1.1.  McClelland Duncan, a son, lived in MO in 1913.

7.2.4.1.2.  Eleanor Duncan, married -------- Burke by 1913.

7.2.4.2.  Samuel Vance Duncan, born 5 Oct. 1840 (Bible record of Aquilla and Lucinda Parker, 7.2.1.) Sullivan Co. TN; to Marion Co. IA 1860; married Melissa Jordan, daughter of Miles Jordan, on 5 Nov. 1868 in Marion Co. IA ("Biographical History of IA" pg. 625, from Mrs. Alberta Westby; and 1881 "History of Marion Co. IA" pg. 732).

"The Biographical History of Iowa" said the father of Samuel Vance Duncan was George Rice Duncan, and that Samuel's grandfather was Joseph Duncan; that three of the five sons of Rice were still living; and that all the sons of Rice had been in the Civil War. S.V. Duncan went to Pleasantville, IA, near where "Aunt Lucy" (7.2.1.) lived; and then to Dallas, TX; he only had one child Dr. Miles who lived in Dallas (Geo. R. Duncan letter 1913; see 7.2.4.6.; see Appendix).

7.2.4.2.1.  Miles Duncan, a doctor, lived in Dallas, TX, 1913.

7.2.4.3.  Nancy A. Duncan; married John W. Ford; lived in Sullivan Co. TN 1870 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 25, pg. 71). They moved to TX, both died before 1913, their children lived in Dallas Co. TX (Geo. R. Duncan letter 1913; see 7.2.4.6.).

7.2.4.4.  William Duncan, born 1843 TN; in Confederate Army; died soon after the close of the war ("Biographical History of Iowa" pg. 625) "in the Confederate" (Geo. R. Duncan letter 1913; see 7.2.4.6.).

7.2.4.5.  Joseph G. Duncan, born 19 Dec. 1845 Sinking Springs, Sullivan Co. TN; in Confederate Army; married Elizabeth Spitzer on 8 Nov. 1866 in Washington Co. TN; died 6 Feb. 1936, age 90. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jesse Spitzer (1805-1873) and Elizabeth Hoover (1813-1870). (Line of Mrs. Charles (Wylda Grant) Gordon; data from Mr. Charles J. Gordon of MD (address not included here); some data from Mrs. Carl D. James of MI (address not included here) to Mrs. Bobbie McDowell.) Lived near Brownsboro in Washington Co. TN in 1913; his children all married before 1913 (Geo. R. Duncan letter 1913; see 7.2.4.6.).

7.2.4.6.  George Rice Duncan, born 1848 TN; lived in Sullivan Co. TN 1870 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 25, pg. 71). Dr. George R. Duncan of Fall Branch, TN, wrote a letter 16 April 1913 to Miss Celia Spurgin of Bristol, TN, which said, among other family news, that Lucy Parker and Celia's grandmother Rosanna Spurgin were sisters of George's father Rice and his Uncle Horlan. George's father had 5 boys and 1 girl. (letter of Geo. R. Duncan 1913, from Larry Spurgin) George had 8 children, the oldest, Dr. O.R. Duncan, lived in the same county that Bristol was in (Geo. R. Duncan letter 1913; see Appendix).

John and B.L. Yoakley were witnesses to deeds to Rice Duncan (7.2.4.) in 1843 and 1845 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 13, pg. 393, 395; and Book 16, pg. 320); and John Yoakley held a mortgage from Rice's widow Ellenor in 1856 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 19, pg. 134).

The following children are listed under Jesse Duncan simply to separate them from the known brothers and sisters, listed above under Rice Duncan (7.2.). Some or all of them may be brothers and sisters and/or children of either Rice (7.2.) or Jesse (7.3.). However, there is NO PROOF that any of them are actually children of either Rice or Jesse.

7.3.1.  Mary "Polly" Duncan, born 1792 TN; married John Bowman (b. 1800 TN) on 31 July 1820 in Washington Co. TN; in Washington Co. TN 1830 (pg. 201); not identified 1840; in Barren Co.                   7.3.1.6.  A daughter ? who married -------- Hagan; had daughter Malinda Hagan b. 1845 KY who lived with John and Mary Bowman in Barren Co. KY in 1850. There is NO PROOF that Malinda Hagan was a granddaughter of John and Mary Bowman.

7.3.2.  Susannah Duncan, born 1800 TN; married Edmond Hodges on 13 April 1811 in Washington Co. TN, bondsman James Haws (Edmend Hodge on the marriage record). Edmond was born 1783 TN, the son of William Hodges ("Genealogy of The Sanders, Alison and Collateral Families of Sullivan & Washington Counties, TN" by W.R. Sanders; extract from Charles Gordon). They were in Washington Co. TN 1830 (pg. 200) and 1840 (pg. 195); in Barren Co. KY 1850 (pg. 469) with children. Also in Barren Co. KY 1850 (pg. 471) were John and Mary Bowman (7.3.1.), as well as numerous other Hodges families from TN.

--   There was also in Meigs Co. In 1850 Alfred's household (#897) consisted of Alfred Duncan 46 TN gunsmith, Margaret 36 TN, Emeline 33 TN (see 7.3.5.), and children.

Mr. Charles Gordon said in his letter of 5 Nov. 1978 that Alfred was a gunsmith and taught his brother Rice (7.2.4.) the trade. Alfred Duncan was listed as having made the famous Marcellus Armstrong gun, for which he received $100 in 1828 ("The Lure of the Great Smokies" by Robert Lindsay Mason, 1927, dedicated "To the memory of my father þ A Pennsylvania Covenanter of the Duncan and Renfrew Clans of old Scotland"; extracts from William Johnson).

Madison Duncan, his brother John P. Duncan (7.3.3.5.) and Rebecca's brother N.W.G. Baxter served in Company G, 60th Mounted Infantry, CSA. This unit was captured in General Grant's successful seige of Vicksburg, MS and was imprisoned in Ohio ("Tennesseeans in Civil War" pub. 1965 by Civil War Centennial Commission of TN; from William Johnson). The family was in Sullivan Co. TN in 1870 (pg. 509), then the Memphis, Shelby Co. TN area; then lived at Lebanon, Indian Territory, in the early 1870's. They moved to Algoa, Brazoria Co. TX in 1898.

TN (pg. 509) the household consisted of J.P. Duncan age 35, Sarah age 34, and the following children:

                        7.3.3.5.1.  William B. Duncan, born 1861 TN.

                        7.3.3.5.2.  Mary E. Duncan, born 1863 TN.

                        7.3.3.5.3.  James E. Duncan, born 1867 TN.

7.3.3.6.  Edmond B. Duncan, born 1838 TN; living in 1859 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 20, pg. 560).

7.3.3.7.  Alfred L. Duncan, born 1840 TN; living in 1871 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 24, pg. 516).

7.3.3.8.  Samuel D. Duncan, born 1843 TN; living in 1869 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 24, pg. 515). Samuel lived with his sister Elmira (7.3.3.3.) in 1860 Sullivan Co. TN census.

7.3.4.  Solomon "Dinkin"; married Susan Parker on 31 Aug. 1824 in Washington Co. TN; was a witness to a deed 3 Jan. 1826 from Sarah (Harris) Parker, later decd. (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 18, pg. 298). (See also Lucinda Duncan who married Aquilla Parker, 7.2.1.).

No Solomon Duncan or Solomon Deakins or Solomon Dinkin has been found in 1830 TN census, but see also Solomon Duncan, 8.3.1. There is NO PROOF this is actually a Duncan.

7.3.5.  Emeline Duncan, born 1817 TN; lived with Alfred Duncan (7.3.3.) in Sullivan Co. TN 1850. Emeline could possibly be a sister of Alfred, or possibly the widow of the unidentified male, born 1810-1815, who lived with Alfred in 1830 and 1840.

7.4.  Robert Duncan, born before 1776; probably married -------- Evans (suggestion by Mr. Hurt); died 1814. He lived on the Watauga River in Washington Co. TN 1801 (tax list); in Roane Co. TN 1802 ("History of Roane Co. TN" pg. 15, 17, from Mr. Oscar H. Hurt); lived on White Oak Creek, a tributary of the Clinch River near the Holston River in eastern Roane Co., near the "Great Road" connecting Knoxville and Kingston (data from Mrs. Evelyn Sigler); was on jury duty 20 April 1814 and died before 17 Oct. 1814 when Evan Evans and Joseph Duncan were appointed administrators of his estate, and Evan Evans, Joseph Duncan, William McKamey, and John Smith were the bondsmen (Roane Co. TN Minute Book 1813-1815, pg. 129, 177; from Mr. Oscar H. Hurt). The Joseph Duncan who was administrator and bondsman must be Robert's brother (7.1.).

This was probably the Robert Duncan who was in Christian's Regiment of Militia, Territory South of the River Ohio, as a private in the Company commanded by James Gregg in Sullivan County, from Sept. 1 to Dec. 3, 1793. (Natnl. Archives Record #147, Service 1784-1811, card numbers 43202463, 43202520; from Stuart Duncan.) The Robert Duncan (10.) who had a son Charles in Sullivan Co. TN was dead by 1782. The Robert Duncan (8.10) son of Charles of Washington Co. TN was probably too young.

--   One Robert Duncan lived in East TN in 1816; he was a soldier in the War of 1812 from Jan. 10 to May 25, 1814, in the 2nd Regiment, Mounted Gunmen, (Brown's), E. TN Volunteers, and signed a power of attorney on 13 May 1816 to William B. Carnes to receive his pay (Military Record from Evelyn Sigler; index from Mrs. Mildred Hofer). This Robert Duncan cannot be the Robert Duncan who died before 17 Oct. 1814 (7.4.); he might possibly be Robert Duncan (8.10.) who lived in Washington Co. TN. However, it is likely he was the Robert Duncan just below who was in Knox Co. TN in 1816.

--   One Robert Duncan was born 1785 VA, son of Robert and Catherine Duncan (Botetourt Co. VA Will Book A, pg. 255, June 1787); married 1st Catherine Darr, daughter of Joseph Darr, on 18 Oct. 1804 in Botetourt Co. VA; married 2nd Mrs. Elizabeth Lyons on 21 Nov. 1809 in Montgomery Co. VA. Elizabeth was born 1785 VA, the widow of William Lyons of Blacksburgh whose will was recorded in July 1808 in Montgomery Co. VA Will Book 1, pg. 346. Robert Duncan was appointed the guardian of Polly, Jane and Betsy Lyons, infant children of William Lyons, in 1816 in Knox Co. TN (Knox Co. TN Guardian Book 0, pg. 127, 156, 157, 174; Montgomery Co. VA Will Book 2, pg. 416). Robert and his family were in Knox Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 370), 1840 (pg. 26), and 1850 (pg. 382). His son William Duncan was born 1820 TN; married 1st Margaret McCloud on 12 March 1840 in Knox Co. TN; married 2nd Sarah Tindell on 23 Nov. 1847 in Knox Co. TN; was in Knox Co. TN in 1850 (pg. 207/414), Benton Co. MO in 1860 (pg. 85) and 1870 (pg. 23), and in Benton Co. AR in 1880 (pg. 18; 1860-80 census from Al Drew). This family is being researched by Mr. Albert L. Drew of MO (address not included here).

Some of the children of Robert Duncan are identified in a deed from his heirs Joseph Duncan, Evan E. Duncan, Robert D. Duncan, William Wormsley and wife Jennett, and Alexander Y. Davis, when they sold his land on 29 March 1847 (Roane Co. TN Deed Book K1, pg. 127-129, from Michele Duncan to Judy Player) and others are from the data of Mr. Oscar H. Hurt (from Mrs. Bobbie McDowell):

7.4.1.  Evan E. (Evans?) Duncan, born 7 Aug. 1795 in Sullivan Co. TN; married 1st Elizabeth Price on 18 May 1817 who died 19 April 1818; married 2nd Elizabeth Jenkins on 7 Dec. 1820 (bond date) in Roane Co. TN; Elizabeth died in 1831 and he married 3rd Mary Ann Jenkins in 1831 in Roane Co. TN by Gray Haggard MG; died 15 Sept. 1862 Roane Co. TN (War of 1812 Pension Application). Mary Ann lived in Knox Co. TN in 1881, Post Office Vancouver in Loudon Co. TN, and drew a widow's pension approved 3 Dec. 1881 (Index to War of 1812 Pension Applications); she was born 28 March 1812, died 10 May 1891 (Florence Johns Mackey). Evan E. Duncan and his third wife, Mary Ann, are buried at Hickory Creek Cemetery, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Knox Co. TN.

He was drafted 13 Nov. 1814 in the War of 1812 in Capt. Jack McKarney's (John McKamy's) Co., 5th Reg. TN Militia, Col. E. Booth, as a private and was discharged 12 May 1815. (Index to Applications for Pensions, War of 1812; from Mrs. Mildred Hofer). At the time he entered service he was 18 years old, 6 feet tall, and had black hair and dark brown eyes; he voted in Roane Co. TN in 1815 (Florence Johns Mackey). He was in Roane Co. TN 1830 (pg. 50), 1840 (pg. 49), and 1850 (pg. 283A, #849-893). In 1850 his household consisted of Evan E. Duncan age 57 TN, Mary A. 39 VA, children, and Nancy Hollins 18 b. TN. In 1860 Roane Co. TN (pg. 68) Evan E. Duncan was listed as age 62, Mary A. 47, and children, including James E. Duncan (7.4.1.3.2.) age 2 b. TN. Evan E. Duncan also owned land in Knox Co. TN in 1855-1856 (Knox Co. TN Deeds, Book T2 pg. 341, Book V2 pg. 138, Book X2 pg. 222, 335). Mary Ann was in Roane Co. TN in 1870 (pg. 363); on the tax lists in Mulberry Twp., Franklin Co AR, 1872-1875 and 1879, and on the census there in 1880 (ED 60, pg. 23, #207-219) with Floyd Duncan age 26 b. TN in her household (from Judy Player).

In 1849 Evan E. Duncan wrote a letter home to "wife and friends" while on a trip to Arkansas looking at land. This may explain the residence of the widow and several of the children in AR in 1875 when they gave Power of Attorney to William S. Duncan (7.4.1.11.) to represent them in an action for distribution of funds against the administrators of Evan's estate (info of Florence Johns Mackey). On 29 Sept. 1870, his widow, Mary A. Duncan of Loudon Co. TN, deeded her dower interest in 1/3 of Even E. Duncan's land to W.B. Hope (Loudon Co. TN Deed Book 3, pg. 369, from Judy Player).

On 10 Jan. 1875, a power of attorney signed by Mary A. Duncan, "Elizabeth" L. Duncan (signed E.L. Duncan), Evan F. Duncan, Samuel A. "Duncan" (signed Saml. S. "Duncan") and wife Martha E. formerly Martha E. Duncan, Hugh L. Shinpauch and wife Eliza P. formerly Eliza P. Duncan of Franklin Co. AR, and Mary J. Stennet widow of Benjamon Stennet formerly Mary J. Duncan of "Crofford" Co. AR, appointed William S. Duncan (7.4.1.11.) of Franklin Co. AR their attorney; Mary A. Duncan was the widow and Ezekiel L. Duncan (7.4.1.7.), Even F. Duncan (7.4.1.12.), Martha E. "Duncan" (7.4.1.10.), Eliza P. Shenpauch (7.4.1.9.) and Mary J. Stinnet (7.4.1.4.) were the children and heirs at law of Evin E. Duncan late of Roane Co. "now Lowden" TN; the estate was distributed by Edward H. Mounger (7.4.1.2.) and Robert D. Duncan (7.4.6.) (Roane Co. TN Deed Book S1, pg. 596; registered in Franklin Co. AR 26 Jan. 1875; also extract from Mr. Hurt).

Children of Evan E. Duncan given in the power of attorney and in Loudon Co. TN deeds (data from Florence Johns Mackey of MD (address not included here), her source Roane Co. TN Chancery Record 27 May 1870 and 11 May 1876, and Loudon Co. TN Deed Book A, pg. 85, 86, 87, 88, 90, 131 (twice) and 331; and Book 3 pg. 369; and Book 9 pg. 260 and 284 (extracts from Judy Player); Roane Co. TN Wills & Settlements Book G, pg. 823?, Jan. 1869, stated there were 11 heirs, copy from Judy Player):

MO in 1845 or 1846; and are on the census there in 1850 (pg. 280). Their children (data from Florence Johns Mackey):

7.4.1.1.1.  Randolph Hugh Duncan, born 14 Nov. 1841 TN (Hugh R. on the census); died 28 Jan. 1915 in Greene Co. MO, buried Johns Chapel (Florence Johns Mackey). Duncan, Hale S. Duncan (7.4.1.1.2.), James K.P. Duncan (7.4.1.1.3.), William F. Burrham and Tennessee E. Burrham (7.4.1.1.4.), all formerly of Loudon Co. TN, sold their share of land of Evan E. Duncan (7.4.1.), their grandfather, to William B. Hope (Loudon Co. TN Deed Book A, pg. 131; extract from Judy Player).

On 2 Aug. 1871, Hugh R. Duncan (7.4.1.1.1.), Hale S. Duncan, James K.P.

7.4.1.1.3.  James Knox Polk Duncan, born 1 June 1845 in Roane Co. TN; married Mary Elizabeth Mason on 28 December 1865 in Greene Co. MO; died 29 May 1921.
