      Z-433/440: Will of Joseph Duncan, sound mind but much affected in body, (1) give my soul to God, (2) payment of my honest and just debts and funeral expenses. Item, My wife and children being provided ample estate and income by her father and there grandfather the late James R. Smith I do not desire to do a great deal more for them, therefore I give my wife in trust for the joint use of herself and my children, the household and kitchen furniture, the carriage & horses, a two horse wagon & harness & horses therefor, six milch cows and three domestic animals necessary for the use & support of my family with power to convert it or any part into other property of like or different nature, and be reserved from the sale hereinafter ordered. Item, after the (above), my executors to support my aged and beloved mother during her natural life. Item (after the foregoing), should my sister Polly Ann Linn be in indigent circumstances, $1000 be invested by my executors in a tract of land for her sole and separate use and yearly support. Item (after the foregoing), my executors pay some $10 or $15 to Arnett. Item, when the foregoing provisions have been satisfied, my executors, if my estate is not exhausted, to convey in fee to the heirs of Joseph Cooley then being, 1/4 Section of my land in the Military bounty tract, Illinois. Item (after the foregoing), my executors pay $1000 to trustees of (blank) in Jacksonville in the erection of a new house to worship Almighty God. Item (after the foregoing), $2000 to estabish in neighborhood of Jacksonville an institution for relief and education of the blind, and like sum ... a lunatic asylum. IL bought by me of David Ingalls. Item, the residue of my property be equally divided between my children and the offspring of any who may have died leaving such. Each boy as he arrives at 21, and each girl at like age or marry, shall be entitled to an equal share of my estate, provided that Court of Probate of Morgan Co. may order that share be paid the child's guardian. Appoint my brother James M. Duncan and my friend William Brown executors, without security. My remaining personal property be sold at public auction ... Item, my executors be agents to lease out the property secured to my family ... investment of trust funds which came to my hands from the executor of the will of the late James R. Smith.       Pg.544: "Morgan County Directory" DUNCAN, J.C., farmer and stockraiser, Sec. 24, P.O. Waverly. Mr. D. was born in NC, May, 1840. His parents, moving to VA, he there remained until he attained his fourteenth year, when he went to MO, where his mother died. The father, not altogether pleased with the prospect in MO, removed to VA. Of a restless, stirring disposition, however, prior to the rebellion he made his way to IL, where he lived in the several counties of Morgan, Sangamon and Macoupin. J.C., who heads this sketch, married Mrs. Arminda J. Allis, relict of Richard Allis, and a daughter of Andrew J. Stice, an old pioneer of this county. Mrs. Duncan died April 27, 1878, leaving to the care of her husband five children: Clara A., Ira J., Irwin L., Minnie A., and Chas. W. (MAD: See ?? Columbus Duncan in 1850 Grayson Co.       Pg.654: Samuel Wood attended school after 1826 in Madison County near Silver Creek. The school was taught by Rice Duncan. "The schoolhouse was a log structure where no floor was laid down, and no window pains interfered, but the ventilation was abundant; here the scholars were instructed in Webster's spelling book and the New Testament; when these were thoroughly understood the education was completed."

      Pg.812-3: DUNCAN, RICHARD Y., blacksmith, Franklin, Morgan Co. IL, was born at Jacksonville, IL, February 20, 1860, the son of Captain John B. and Adeline G. Duncan, natives of Tennessee and Kentucky. Mrs. Duncan's ancestors saw service in both the Revolutionary and Black Hawk Wars. While still a young man John B. Duncan became fired with an enthusiasm to serve his country, which at length resulted in his enlistment in Company H, 32 IL Volunteer Infantry for service in the Civil War ... its Captain ... lose his leg. ... Mexican War and also took part in the Mormon troubles. ... He was the father of twelve children -- six boys and six girls. His death, which resulted from gangrene, occurred July 18, 1864, when he was in his 44th year. His widow survived him many years, dying at the age of 81.
            Richard Y. Duncan received his education in the public schools of Franklin. Very early he began to learn the blacksmith's trade, so that when he was only 18 he started in life for himself as a journeyman. For 27 years he has followed this calling ... On May 1, 1884, he was married to Caroline, daughter of Henry Reinbach, of Franklin, Ill., and of this union five children have been born -- Dessau, Meda, Ruth, Harold and Esther. ... Republican ... Masonic ... Christian Church.
      Pg.813-4: DUNCAN, WILLIAM PERCY, B.S., M.D., ... young physician and surgeon of Jacksonville, Morgan Co. IL, was born in Jacksonville, October 30, 1878, the son of Edward and Emily (Ruddick) Duncan, natives of Pennsylvania and Indiana respectively. The grandfather, Robert Duncan, was born in Beaver Co. PA, in 1809, and the grandmother, Martha (Neville) Duncan, was born in the same county, in 1816. The former, who was a farmer by occupation, died when 78 years old, and the latter, at the age of 62 years.
            Edward Duncan was born in Beaver Co. PA, August 16, 1838, and received his mental training in the district schools and at Beaver Academy, being afterward, for 12 years, a teacher in the schools of Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois. He enlisted August 9, 1862, in Co. G, 134th Reg., PA Volunteer Infantry, ... In 1868 he located at Cerro Gordo, IL, where he followed the occupation of teaching. In 1876 he graduated from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, ... after which, at Jacksonville, he began the successful practice ... member of the Centenary Methodist Church .... On March 16, 1869, at Seymour [Jackson Co.], IN, Dr. Duncan was married to Emily Ruddick, a daughter of Solomon and Elizabeth (Fisher) Ruddick. Two children were the result of this union -- Helen, who was born September 14, 1874, and died May 4, 1900, and William Percy.
            Dr. (W.P.) Duncan ... in October, 1904, he located at Jacksonville ... On July 21, 1903, Dr. W.P. Duncan was married to Florence Tunison, a daughter of Henry Cuthbert and Catherine (Murray) Tunison. One child -- Edward Tunison, born June 7, 1904 -- resulted from this union. ...

      Pg.270: DUNCAN, RICE, was born March 5, 1781, in NC. He was brother to Marshal and John. When young his father's family moved to Cumberland Co. KY. He was there married to Barbara Antle. They had four children, and Mrs. D. died. He married Luranah Rutherford. They brought one child from Kentucky to St. Clair Co. where they had five children and moved to Morgan, and then to Sangamon Co., arriving Oct., 1837, in what is now Salisbury. Mrs. Luranah Duncan, died May 29, 1862, and Rice Duncan died Oct. 7, 1863, both in Salisbury township. Of their children --
            SIDNEY S., born Dec. 18, 1810, in Kentucky, married in Sangamon Co. to Mary Rogers. They had three children. He was Judge of Morgan Co. court, and died Aug., 1872, in Jacksonville. His widow resides in Chicago.
      Pg.84: ANTLE, REV. JOHN, was born April 15, 1789, in Cumberland Co. KY. Elizabeth Buchanan was born in Cumberland Co. PA. Her parents moved to Lincoln Co. KY, when she was seven years old. Her father died in that county, and she went to live with a married sister in Cumberland Co. John Antle and Elizabeth Buchanan were there married. They had five children. The family then moved to Morgan Co. IL in 1829, and from there to Sangamon Co., arriving Jan. 9, 1830, in what is now Salisbury township. Mrs. Elizabeth Antle died Sept., 1844, and John Antle died August 30, 1864, she in Menard Co. and he in Salisbury. ....
      Pg.157: BUCHANAN, REUBEN, was born March 20, 1809, in Woodford Co. KY. His father moved, in 1819 or '20, to Morgan Co. IL. Reuben remained there until 1834, when he came to Sangamon Co., settling at Salisbury, where he was married to Barbara Duncan, a step-daughter of Solomon Miller. She was born March 15, 1812, in Cumberland Co. KY. Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan had four children, three of whom died young. The only one living -- Mr. Buchanan moved from Salisbury to Springfield in April, 1847, and was engaged in the grocery business until his death, which occurred Nov. 14, 1861.       Pg.251-2: NATHAN C. ANTLE. The mother of our subject was born in St. Clair Co., this State, January 25, 1820, and bore the maiden name of Nancy Duncan. She is a devoted member of the Christian Church and even at her advanced age finds ways in which to make herself useful. Her father, Rice Duncan, a native of South Carolina and a schoolteacher in his earlier years, was one of the early settlers in St. Clair Co., this State. Thence he removed to Morgan Co., where he farmed for some years, then located near Salisbury on the county line, where he improved and became the owner of one hundred and seventy acres. He was never idle, and having a wonderful constitution lived to be 83 years old, and during his entire life was probably unexcelled in industry. He reared a family of ten daughters and two sons, one of the latter, Sidney Duncan, having been Judge of Morgan Co. several years.

They were married in his native county, on the second day of October, 1828, and twelve days thereafter the young couple, with all their worldly goods, departed for the great West, intending to make Illinois ... their home for the future. On the eleventh day of November, 1828, they arrived in Morgan Co., where they remained some sixteen months, when they came to this county, arriving here on the fourteenth day of March, 1830. ...

            In White Co. TN, on the 2d of October 1828, John Huston married Miss Ann, daughter of William and Mary (Duncan) Melvin, and to them were born the following children: William M., a practicing physician of Blandinsville; Walter, Rigdon and Crockett, all deceased; Preston of this sketch; Thomas, a farmer and stock raiser of Columbus, Kan.; Mary, wife of Strather Givens, a retired farmer of Abingdon, IL; and John, who carries on farming and stock-raising in Blandinsville Township. The father of this family was called to his final rest July 8, 1854, and the mother, who long survived him, passed away January 22, 1892. ...
      Pg.188: WILLIAM M. HUSTON, M.D., almost quarter century engaged in practice of medicine in Blandinsville, born Jacksonville, Morgan Co. IL, 6 Aug. 1829, one of family of 8 children whose parents were John and Annie (Melvin) Huston. Father and mother both natives of White Co. TN, and marriage was celebrated there. The lady was a daughter of William and Mary (Duncan) Melvin. In 1830 John Huston removed with his family to McDonough Co. IL, and farmed. Of children, William M. of this sketch is eldest; Walter L. died age 22; Rigdon, farmer & stock raiser of McDonough Co. is now deceased; Preston retired farmer living in Blandinsville; Thomas B. retired in Columbus, Kan.; Mary E. wife of S. Givens retired farmer in Abingdon, IL; John farming in Blandinsville Twp; and Crockett, decd, farmer of McDonough Co.

      Pg.387, Atchison Co., Atchison. P.P. DUNKIN, contractor and plasterer, Atchison, Kan., was born in 1836. In 1845, went to Morgan County, Ill. In 1855, went to Virginia, Ill., where he learned the trade of plain and ornamental plasterer. In 1857, commenced taking contracts. In 1863, went to Missouri where he followed his trade, and in 1865 came to this place, and has plastered many of the largest blocks, among these the Ogden block, Price block and a large number of the best residences. He employs twenty men in the various capacities of his business, and last year paid out $10,000 for labor alone. Was married in 1859 at Randolph, Mo., to Miss Sarah Palmer. They have six children -- Dora I., Squire W., John W., Mary, George and Ollie. In 1869, he was appointed Deputy Marshal of this place and held the office two years. Is a member of the Atchison Lodge K. of H. (MAD: Indexed Phillips P. Dunkin)
