Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Pg.195: Moultrie Co. IL, City & Twp. of Sullivan. John H. Dunscomb, born in Trumbull Co. OH on 8 June 1839; his father, Orren H. Dunscomb was a native of Vermont and emigrated to OH in 1803, settling at Weathersfield in Trumbull Co.; he was one of early pioneers of OH; he married Sophia H. Gray, a native of Trumbull Co. Mr. Dunscomb was 4th in a family of 6 children, raised in his native county and obtained good education in common schools; his mother died in 1851 and his father in 1855. In the latter year, then 12 years old, he came to IL; for a year or two, he was employed by the month in Moultrie Co. and in 1857 began teaching school in Lovington Twp. In 1859 he went to TX and was a resident of that State at the time of the breaking out of the rebellion. Against his wishes he was obliged to enter the confederate army; he served with a regiment on the frontier where there were few chances of getting away, but in March 1865 suceeded in reaching Mexico where he remained till after the close of the war, July 1865; he returned to Moultrie Co. and resumed teaching, every winter till 1873 when he was elected treasurer of Moultrie Co. on the independent farmers' ticket; re-elected in 1875. In 1877 became Treasurer and Agent of Moultrie Co. Co-operative Association, and took charge of its store at Sullivan. Sept. 22, 1867, he married Jane E., dau. of Samuel and Eliza Mitchell; he has six children by this marriage. His father was one of the early members of the free-soil party and he himself is a republican. Justice of Peace 1872; Methodist Episcopal Church.
