Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Pg.606-7: James F. Duncan, educator of a quarter century's experience in White Co., now in charge of the 8th grade of public schools of Monticello; born in Carroll Co. IN Nov. 30, 1865, one of nine children, two of whom are decd. Their parents were William and Wealtha (Briggs) Duncan, substantial people of Scotch-Irish ancestry, for many years identified with farming interests of White Co.; the family to White Co. in 1866. William Duncan had in the meantime gained an honorable record as a soldier in the Civil war; he enlisted in Co. K of the 63rd IN Infantry, being mustered in at Indianapolis, ... about one year; occupation a farmer & stock raiser, Republican, Christian Church, died Feb. 10, 1904, his wife died Oct. 19, 1890, both now at rest in Princeton Twp. James F. Duncan reared from infancy in White Co., educated local schools, two years Valparaiso University, 1 year Univ. of Colorado; 1908 became teacher of 8th grade in Monticello, Republican, Mason, he & wife in Christian Church. On Dec. 16, 1891, Mr. Duncan mar. Miss Dora Sexton, dau. of Louis W. and Sarah (Briney) Sexton; Sexton family were early settlers in Princeton Twp, Mrs. Duncan's parents now reside at Wolcott.
Pg.777: Robert E. Duncan, insurance man, White Co., of Monticello, a son of William Duncan, he was born Oct. 17, 1862, in Monon Twp, White Co., where his early life was spent. Born and reared in VA, William Duncan came with his parents to White Co. when but 9 years old; soon after the outbreak of the Civil war, he enlisted in 46th IN Volunteer Infantry, returned to Monon Twp, upwards of 30 years engaged in general farming; fall of 1888, soon after death of his first wife, he moved into Village of Monon where he lived retired until his death in 1899; he mar. first in White Co. to Weltha (MAD: sic) Briggs, born NY State, and of 9 children, 7 now living. He mar. 2nd Cordelia Elder who survives him; he was Lincoln republican, member of Christian Church. Robert E. Duncan ... moved to Monticello on March 7, 1901, ... mar. March 26, 1890, Miss Eva R. McCampbell, dau. of David T. and Elizabeth (McCullough) McCampbell, who are of Scotch ancestry, republican, member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, member of Presbyterian Church.

Pg.328: JOHN D. SCROGGS was born in Blount County, Tenn., October 10, 1820, and is the eldest of the six children of David and Margaret (Delzell) Scroggs, natives respectively of North Carolina and Tennessee. The family came to Putnam County, this State, in 1831, moved to Carroll County in 1832, and thence moved to this county in 1836, and located on land which the father had previously entered. The elder Mr. Scroggs was, in his days here, the only blacksmith between Burnettsville and Monticello; he died here in December, 1874, preceded by his wife in about 1848. John D. Scroggs was reared a farmer, and at the age of twenty began life by cutting wood, splitting rails and getting out square timber. This he continued until March, 1847, when he purchased the farm where he now lives. He was married, March 27, 1851, to Maria, daughter of John Gibson, and born in Ohio. In February, 1852, Mrs. Gibson died, and December 6, 1856, Mr. Scroggs married Eliza C. Carson, who died in April, 1860. November 19, 1860, Mr. Scroggs married Mrs. Margaret (Duncan) Delzell, and she died in April, 1875, leaving a family of four children -- David, Susan A., Margaret E. (deceased) and Joseph A. Mr. Scroggs is a Democrat and a member of the United Presbyterian Church. He owns eighty acres of good land, well cultivated and earned through his own industry and energy. (MAD: 1880 White Co. Vol.1, pg.297, History of Lincoln Twp. Samuel Duncan was a native of the State of NY, removing with his parents to Ohio, from there to Indiana, and from the Hoosier State to Iowa in 1853, when he became a citizen of Madison Co. He has held various Lincoln Twp. offices.

One son and one dau., Josephine S. & Charles H.; Mrs. Skinner died Sept. 25, 1862, and on 5 Aug. 1864 he married her sister Charlotta, born White Co. IN 8 March 1840, who was the mother of 5 ch: Edna R., Willie, Harry B., Loren H., Laura C. Mrs. Skinner d. 12 July 1884 and the Dr. then married Emily J. Hess ... Dr. Skinner lived White Co.
