Letter June 22, 1839, from William Barker, Allen Co. KY: William Boren of Madison Co. MO I am told is drawing a pension as a Rev. Soldier. I have heard him say myself that he took his Father's place and served six weeks & that he never rendered any more service. He never spoke on the subject when sober but said as much as the above when intoxicated. His father was a notorious Tory drafted as such in the Battle of Kings Mountain. These facts can be fully sustained by Jacob Miller now living in Clabourn Parish, Louisiana, & Gibson Young of the County of Simpson. I feel it to be my duty to make this communication in the hope that you will cause an investigation so that the government may not be swindled.
Letter July 9, 1839, from War Dept. Pension Office to Mr. William Barker, Scottsville, KY. I have received your letter of the 22d ult. relative to the case of William Boren. Until a full investigation of the case can be had, his pension will cease. You have mentioned the names of Jacob Miller and Gibson Young as persons who can substantiate the charge against Boren but I do not learn from your letter the particular post office to which I should send letters in order to reach these persons ...
Feb. 13, 1840, letter to Beverly Allen of St. Louis that William Boren's pension was suspended; Letter 25 Feb. 1840 from Beverly Allen, St. Louis, asking the reason; letter 7 Dec. 1849, request to pay the amount due to William Boren.

Pension Index Card File, alphabetical; of the Veterans Administrative Contact and Administration Services, Admin. Operations Services, 1861-1934; Duff to A-J Duncan (negative FHL film 540,888, some cards very faint); Joseph Duncan to Dunn (positive FHL film 540,889, some cards very dark)
Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Stephens was charged with having stolen a considerable sum of money from his neighbor, Caruthers, but there was not sufficient proof to convict, and the case against him was discharged. Soon after a man named John Duncan came to the county from Tennessee, and, hearing the reports of the robbery, planned to murder Stephens, secure the money which he was supposed to have stolen, and make his escape. He went to Stephens' house two and one-half miles east of Fredericktown, and represented him self as a land buyer. Stephens was at work in the woods not far away, with his sons, two young lads, and thither Mrs. Stephens sent Duncan. The latter by strategem succeeded in securing the ax and gun which Stephens and his sons had, and murdered all three. He went to the house, killed Mrs. Stephens, spent some time in searching for the money, and departed leaving two small children unharmed. He was arrested a day or two later, tried, convicted and sentenced to be hung on April 5, 1821. The execution took place in the northeast part of town, near the creek at what is still known as "Duncan's Hole." People came from all the surrounding counties, and several hundred were present Duncan made a full confession upon the scaffold, entirely exonerating two worthy citizens who had been indicted as accessories.
