Expedition Against the Indians in 1791: Capt. Jonathan Rucastle's Co., Major Thomas Paterson's Battalion Levies, 2nd Regiment Infantry, U.S. Army: #17, Duncan, Joseph, Private, entered April 19, '91, 6 month period, left service Nov. 19, 1791. (The above battle took place with the Indians near Port Recovery, OH, on November 4, 1791.)
War With Great Britian, 1812-1815: Capt. Robert Conovers' Company of Infantry, 3rd Regiment, NJ Militia: #16, Duncan, George, Private, entered Sept. 20, 1814, for duration of war, left service Dec. 9, 1814. (pg. 97)
Capt. Isaac Smith's Company of Independant Artillery; Cape May, NJ, Independant Regiment: This company volunteered to defend seacoast for the war:
#55, Duncan, Peter, Teamster, from Spring, 1813 to close of war.
#56, Duncan, Stephen, Teamster, from Spring, 1813 to close of war.
While these men were not mustered into the service as Militia, they were employed under Government contractors. The majority of these men served from date of their contract to Feb. 17, 1815 (close of the war). (pg. 147)
Officers and Enlisted Men in U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from NJ.: Duncan, Silas, Midshipman, Nov. 15, 1809; ordered to serve on Frigate "President" Flagship of Capt. John Rodgers. North Atlantic and West India Squadron. Nov. 12, 1810 to Feb. 1814; took part in engagement with British Frigate "Belvidera" off Nantucket Shoals, Atlantic Ocean, June 23, 1812; Ordered to duty on Lake Champlain, April 18, 1814, and assigned as Acting Lieutenant on Flagship "Saratoga", Capt. Thomas MacDonough commanded Squadron; on Sept. 11, 1814, while in command of one of the galleys, detached from the squadron to arrest progress of British Fleet against Platsburgh, NY, was wounded by a cannon ball in right shoulder, permanently disabling his right arm; Rec'd thanks and a sword of honor by a Resolution of Congress, approved Oct. 20, 1814 for gallant service in this action; made Lieutenant Dec. 9, 1814. Died Sept. 14, 1834, after commanding 3 different ships. Took leaves Jan. 1, 1825 and Jan. 1, 1833.

Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.
