Samuel Fletcher DeFord, a banker of Ottawa, Ohio, was a son of John DeFord, whose earlier years were spent in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and his later life in Carroll County, Ohio, and who married Matilda Littell, a daughter of Alonzo Littell and a cousin of Eliakim Littell, founder of "Littell's Living Age."
