Hello Listers:
I have not posted in a while & have decided to try again. I am searching for
any KELLY ancestors/descendants or researchers who are looking for the same
surname from about 1828 to 1891 in the Kent & Grenville County areas.
My BRICK WALL is Thomas Francis KELLY. He is buried in Burritts
Rapids;Oxford-On-Rideau Township; Grenville County; Christ Church Anglican
Church Cemetery. Thomas KELLY died in Peterborough County; Belmont Township
on 28 April 1891 at the reported age of 1892, according to his death record.
His tombstone lists him as having died on 28 April 1891 at the age of 90. Oh
well, what is two years <grin!
Thomas Francis KELLY's place of birth on the Death Record from Peterborough
County & the Ontario Census of 1871 list his place of birth as Ireland
[Around 1799 or 1800]. According to the Oxford-On-Rideau Township, Grenville
County Census, Thomas & Hannah KELLY had the following 15 children born
between 1838 and 1866
[Only 28 years Folks!]:

Their eldest son, James KELLY, married Rebecca TOMPKINS [Daughter of Nathan
TOMPKINS- War of 1812 Veteran & son of Israel TOMPKINS-A well-known United
Empire Loyalist] in Kent County; Harwich Township, Ontario. James & Rebecca
KELLY were the parents of my Grandfather, Nathan Tompkins KELLY, who was born
on 24, August, 1867 in Blenheim, Harwich Township, Kent County, Ontario.
Nathan Tompkins KELLY & James & Rebecca Tompkins KELLY immigrated to the
United States in 1879 & ended up in Findlay Ohio, where my father, Luther
James KELLY was born in 1907.
It appears that most all of these KELLY's were Irish Protestant; More
specifically-Thomas Francis KELLY was Church of England or Episcopalian; Some
of the other KELLY's listed were Methodist.
Now I know that with all of these "KELLY KIDS!" that I have listed that I
have to have some cousins; whether they are KELLY'S; TOMPKINS; FULCHER'S;
ROSE'S; BROWN'S; or GREW'S out there somewhere. If anyone recognizes these
names please e-mail me or contact me on my message board on my website listed

Hello Listers:
On July 13, 1999 I received an e-mail from a Dorothy Howe Suri <e-mail name
Dotsuri regarding a Naomi Kelly; born February 8, 1845 in Burritt's Rapids,
Ontario Canada. She indicated to me that she was a fifth generation
descendant of Naomi Kelly Howe Morgan. At that time, I was unaware that
Thomas & Hannah {Brown} Kelly had fifteen children, one of which was a Neome
or Naomi Kelly born in Burritt's Rapids about 1845 or 1847.
Subsequent, to Dorothy Suri's e-mail I discovered the following:
1. From "Who's Where, A Guide To The Cemeteries of Rideau Township,"
edited
by Jim Kennedy and produced by the Rideau Heritage Board of Publication,
Township of Rideau, in 1980, Thomas KELLY and Hannah KELLY are listed as
being buried in Christ Church Anglican Church Cemetery, Burritt's Rapids in B
10. The inscriptions on the small white vertical monument that was
repaired
and restored by the cemetery board in 1997 reads....."Hannah KELLY; Died
15,
March, (Blank) Ae 78 years."......[This (Blank) year is unusual &
basically
means that the place where her death should have been engraved was quite
smooth & appears as though it has never been cut! Has anyone else come
across a similar situation?] On the adjacent side of this four-sided
gravemarker is another inscription which reads......"Thomas KELLY; Died 28,
April, 1891, Ae 90 years."
2. According to the 1871 Census of Ontario, Thomas KELLY's birhplace was
listed as Ireland and his age as 61. His religion was listed as Church of
England, Anglican and his occupation was listed as a lobourer! This 1871
Census of Ontario shows Thomas KELLY as residing in Leeds & Grenville, North
District, (070) & in the Subdistrict of Oxford (E).
3.Thomas KELLY & his wife, Hannah {Brown} KELLY, are listed with their
children on the 1861; 1871; & 1881 Leebee Census for Oxford-On-Rideau
Township, Grenville County, Ontario, Canada as follows:
(1)James KELLY; {My Great-Great Grandfather}...Born 09, September, 1838 in
Burritt's Rapids, Grenville County, Ontario, Canada!
(2)Susana KELLY; Born about 1841 in Upper Canada!

(14)Thomas KELLY; Born about 1859 or 1861 in Upper Canada!
(15)Albert KELLY; Born about 1863 or 1866 in Ontario, Canada!
My problem is that I I have misplaced Dorothy Howe Suri's e-mail address and
I need to desperately contact her to advise that I have discovered a Naomi

Hello Richard & Listers:
In the spirit of your e-mail here is my first post for the New Year!
Are there any Tompkins or Kelly descendants out there who are aware of the
following:
My Great Great Grandfather James KELLY [Born: 09, Sep., 1838 in Burritts
Rapids, Oxford-on-Rideau Township, Grenville County, Upper Canada & who
died:
07, Feb., 1922 at about 83 years of age in El Dorado, Butler County,
Kansas]
appears on the 1861 Oxford-on-Rideau Leebee Census at age 23 as a part of his
father's Thomas Francis KELLY's [Born somewhere in Ireland about 1800-Died
28, April, 1891at age 90 or 92 in Belmont Township, Peterboro County,
Ontario-Buried in Burritts Rapids Christ Church Anglican Cemetery,
Oxford-on-Rideau Township, Grenville County, Ontario] family, just before he
migrated to Harwich Township, Kent County, Upper Canada.
I found James KELLY on the 1871 Ontario Census as a 33 year old farmer of the
Methodist Religion [His father, Thomas KELLY, was Anglican or Episcopalian]
living in Kent District; Harwich Subdistrict. The 1871 Ontario Census also
lists James KELLY's birthplace and his ethnicity as Irish.
The Archiva Index to the 1871 Census of Ontario - National Archives of Canada
lists James KELLY as follows: "Age: 33; Birthplace: Ontario;
Religion:
Methodist: Origin: Irish; Occupation: Farmer; District: KENT (002);
Sub-district: Harwich (D); Division: 2; Page: 8; Microfilm
reel: C-9891:
Reference: RG31 -- Statistics Canada."
James KELLY subsequently married Rebecca TOMPKINS [Born: about 1841 in Upper
Canada or Quebec-Died: May of 1923 in El Dorado, Butler County, Kansas at
the age of 82. She was the daughter of Nathan TOMPKINS] in 1862.
The "Kent County, Ontario Marriage Registers 1857-1869; Volume One"
lists:
"James KELLY, age 22, of Harwich, born Canada, s/o Thomas & Hannah,
Married
04, May, 1862, Rebecca TOMPKINS, age 21, of Harwich, Born Canada, d/o Nathan
&
Rebecca. Witnesses: Richer TOMPKINS of____________; Eliza
TOMPKINS
of____________.
While residing in Kent County from about 1862 until about 1879 (17 years) ,
James KELLY & Rebecca KELLY had the following children:
1. Electa Hannah KELLY (Married name--PRESSNELL): Born: 14,
February, 1862
in KENT County, Ontario, Canada. Died: 13, March, 1915 in Findlay,
Hancock
County, Ohio. Her Record of Death in probate court indicated that she was
52
when she died of paralysis. Her occupation was listed as a dressmaker. Her
address was 882 Park in Findlay, Ohio at the time of her death and she had no
surviving children.
2. Nathan Tompkins KELLY (My Grandfather): Born: 24, August, 1867 in
Blenheim, Kent County, Ontario, Canada. Died: 06, December, 1934, at
age
67, in Artesia, Eddy County, New Mexico. He died early on a Thursday
morning
(8:30 a.m.) at his home, about a mile Northwest of Artesia, of pneumonia.
He
had moved to Artesia, New Mexico in 1924, during the early oil boom and was
an oil rig driller and builder. The U.S. 1900 Census of Findlay, Hancock
County, Ohio, lists Nathan TOMPKINS KELLY and his father, James KELLY, as
attaining the status of a naturalized U. S. citizen in 1879, at about the age
of 14. Since his youngest sister, Orpha Jane KELLY, was born in Kent
County
in 1875, it appears that he and his family emigrated from Canada between 1875
& 1879. Because his maternal grandparents, Nathan & Rebecca
TOMPKINS both
died in 1879, it is conceivable that this is the year that Nathan Tompkins
KELLY & his family emigrated to the U. S.
Nathan Tompkins KELLY married Laura Marie STATELER on 25, December, 1893 in
Ohio. They had the following children:
(1) Nathan Tompkins KELLY, Jr. (Born: 21, Dec., 1894 in Findlay, Hancock
County, Ohio-Died: 27, October, 1977 in Artesia, Eddy County, New Mexico)
(2) Carl Stateler KELLY (Born: 05, Jan., 1896 in Findlay, Hancock County,
Ohio-Died: 22, November, 1966 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma)
(3) Laura Marie KELLY (CHESNUT) (Born: 27, Aug., 1898 in Findlay, Hancock
County, Ohio-Died: 12, Jan., 1978 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan)
(4) Hugh David KELLY (Born: 12, Jul., 1900 in Findlay, Hancock County,
Ohio-Died: 16, Aug., 1973 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma)
(5) Doratha Rebecca KELLY (PAINTER) (Born: 07, Jul., 1904 in Findlay,
Hancock County, Ohio-Died: 1998 in Waco, Texas)
(6) Luther James KELLY (My Father) (Born: 15, Jun., 1907 in Findlay,
Hancock
County, Ohio-Died: 15, Jul., 1972 in Borger, Hutchinson County, Texas)
3. Orpha Jane KELLY (Married name -- BRANDENBERG):
Born: 6, June, 1875 in Kent County, Ontario, Canada. Died: 09,
September,
1917, at age 42 of chronic nephritus arteriosclerosis in Findlay, Hancock
County, Ohio! The Record of Death -- Probate Court of Hancock County,
listed
her residence address as 622 Washington Street in Findlay, Ohio! She had
no
known living children.
If anyone recognizes this family please contact me.

Howdy! Eh! Kelly:
My line descends from a Thomas Kelly {D.O.B. Unknown-But of Irish
Origin}! He married a Hannah Brown {Marriage date unknown} and
they sired a son by the name of James Kelly who was born on 09,
Sep. 1838 in Burritt's Rapids, which is located in
Oxford-Township-On-The Riedeau Canal, Grenville County, Ontario,
Canada.
As a result of my research, I discovered a Thomas Kelly on
the 1842 Census of Grenville County residing in Oxford Township
on the second concession; lot two; and he had five people in his
family group.
The 1842 Census also indicated that Thomas Kelly had
resided there for seven years {Since about 1835}. I also checked
Assessments for Grenville County {Oxford Township} and discovered
a Thomas Kelley residing on Concession four; Lot six; consisting
of 100 acres in 1840. Also in the Census Records for the Four
Townships on the Rideau River, I discovered a Thomas Kelly
residing in Oxford Township in 1840. This is probably my
G-G-Grandfather.
There was a Ransom Kelly residing in Montague Township in
1825 and I discovered a baptism from Montague Township regarding
a Sarah Kelly who was born on 23, March, 1845 to a Martin &
Maria Kelly. I have also seen Military Records on a Martin Kelly
and the name has popped up a number of times during my research
in Grenville County.
From Ontario marriage records I have also been able to
determine that James Kelly s/o Thomas and Hannah Kelly also had
three sisters as follows: Martha Kelly; Jerusha Kelly; and Maria
Kelly. Now from the marriage records it appears that my Kellys'
moved around between Merrickville; Burritt's Rapids; &
Kemptville in 1873; 1874; & 1875. These marriage records
indicated that they were all Methodists.
I do know that on James Kelly's {My Great Grandfather's}
death certificate there is a mention of Montreal. Where is Mara
Township? Could the above Kelly's be related to your Martin
Kelly?
Thanks, Loren Kelly, An Irish Canadian American, Living In Texas!

I have a family story. My great-great grandfather Peter Kelly was living in Ireland and studying to become a priest, when one night on a trip to a tavern he lost his short Irish temper and in a brawl accidently killed. I wondered where there may be information on this, and to find out it's accuracy. He found himself eventually in NewBrunswick Canada and married Jane McClane (No date given), he had my great-great grandfather in NewBrunswick on March 30, 1850, who died in Germania Township, MN on March 9, 1917 Thank you Lisa

I am looking for information on my maternal grandmother her name was Margaret Kelly. She passed away in January of l928 when my mother was l8 years old , my mother's father had passed away when my mother was two years old and prior to them moving to Canada in January l9l2;
My grandmother's was born in Guernsey, her first husband's name was Thomas Moylan they had one son Ben who was born in approximately l898 and they had a daughter Margaret who died on December l4th, l895 at age 5 months.
I am in possession of two family albums which my grandmother brought toCanada with her in it are photos of her Mother , grandmother brothers, sisters etc. I am afraid that my mother told me quite a few of their names when I was around 8 or l0 years old and I remember very few . I happen to resemble my grandmother , and my daughter is more her aunt. If you know of anyone who is looking for photos of this family please let me know or if they would like to communicate. But also if you have any information on my grandmother like date of birth , her parents name and dates of birth plus her sibling names I woud love to know.
I have tried for around 5 years to find my mother nephew in the United States and have had no luck. My mothers full brother moved to the states in l952 and the only contact that we had with him was in approximately l974 when I needed information for my mother's birth certificate. I will pass the pictures on to my children but I treasure things like them and I thought that someone out there may also be searching.
My mother's half brother Ben Moylan passed away in Toronto, Ontario Canada in approximately l965. My father was not the type to encourage any contact with my mother's family. He passed away when I was a teenager. Well I hope that I haven't bored you to much. Take care and thank you for taking the time to read this e mail Yours truly Linda
My gggrandfather, Jonathan KELLY emigrated to Canada from Tyrone abt 1818, settling in Quebec. There seems to be no trace of where in Tyrone he came from. Names of his seven sons, in birth order, are James, Robert, Jonathan, Thomas, George, Samuel, Joseph. He married in Canada Sarah Jane BATES who was also from Tyrone.
