All of these may or may not be related to the Alexander / Hiram / Jessie Kelly line. Being from North Carolina doesn't help much as there were dozens of Kelly families during the Revolutionary War, some were Rebels and some, hard to believe, were actually Loyalists.

Subject: [KELLY] Drury/Drewry Kelly born ca. 1778 - 1785

Drury/Drewry Kelly/Kelley was the son of Jacob Kelly and Susannah  Allen.
He was probably born 1778-1780 (perhaps later).
1804 Drury Kelly witnessed a deed in Clarke Co., GA.
1809 Drury Kelly deeded land to Philip Allen in Clarke Co., GA.
A Drury Kelly is shown as a soldier in the War of 1812 in 4th Regt.
 (Booth's) Georgia Militia.
A Drury Kelly is shown on the 1820 census of Gwinnett County.

What happened to Drury Kelly?  Did he die or move  elsewhere?

 Thanks,
 Phyllis

My ancestors traveled from NC to Georgia in the 1820s.  I found then in Habersham County in 1830.  This was the time when the Native Americans were being relocated  out of the area and land opened in Cherokee County.  My ancestor Hiram Kelly purchased land in Habersham County in the 1820s.  I found him in the 1840 Census of Cherokee County.

Because of this I felt Evan Pearson might also have relocated.  I did not look at the history of Cass County but I did find an Evan Pearson living there in 1840.

Hope this is helpful.

Hey Y'all, please allow me to check in. My great-great-grandfather was an
Allen Kelley, born about 1835 in Georgia. His mother was Elizabeth (Stone?
Jenkins?) Kelley, shown in the 1850 Paulding (now Haralson) county, Georgia
census.. Cannot determine who Allen's father was but he died in Georgia
between 1845-1850. It is "thought" by some elderly, now deceased, family
members that his father was also named Allen or Jacob? Allen's siblings, all
born in Georgia, were Sarah in 1835, Nancy in 1838, Benjiman in 1843 in
Gwinnett county, Jacob in 1844 in Gwinnett county and Alfred in 1846 in
Jasper county. Have been trying for almost 30 years to determine who the
"mysterious" Mr. Kelley was. Obviously, he was in Gwinnett and Jasper
counties in the 1840's? Would greatly appreciate any help in that quest. I
cannot find a Drury Kelly/Kelley in any of my records of Gwinnett county?
Perhaps I have overlooked him, but I did not see him on either the 1820 or
1830 Gwinnett census?
Thanks much, and good luck.

 Hi Phyllis;
I'm not sure we have the same Allen Kelly here. My Allen C. Kelly was
 born about 1870
and married Francis Harris. They had seven children: Nellie, Alma,
 Gressed, Love, Coleman,
 Russell and Arnold.

I descend from Allen Kelly, and there is plenty of information on him and
his family.
Nancy (1790-1876 FL) m. Thornton Fowler (who died Coffee Co., AL  1850)
Jacob Jr. (1783- 1859/50 MS) m. 1st Bersheba ---   2nd Chloe  --
William Loid (b. ca. 1800) m. Mary --
Emanuel T. (b. 1810 GA- 1871 LA) m. Helen Mira Nicholson
After Jacob's death in 1835, Jane, William L., Emanuel T.and Jacob,  Jr.
move
to west - to AL and MS.
-----------------

What happened to Jacob's other children?
1. What happened to Drury/Drewry?  When was he  born?  Is he the Drury
Kelly
in Gwinnett Co. in 1820, is he go west?
Was he the Drury Kelly on the 1820 census of Gwinnett Co., GA
2. What happened to Polly?  Was her name  Mary?  Did she marry a Roberts?
Where did she  live/die?
3. What happened to Sukey?  Was her name  Susan/Susannah?  Did she marry a
McAlpine?  Where did she  live/die?
There is a Susan McAlpine (b. 1794 GA) on the 1850 census of Rankin  Co.,
MS,
and a Susan McAlpine (b. 1792 GA) on the 1860 census of Greene  Co., AL.
Are
these the same person, and is she the daughter of Jacob  Kelly?
4. What happened to Sinthy (Jacob's youngest daughter) ?  Did she married
John Evans and/or Benjamin Dearing?  Where  did she live/die?

If you have any information on Drury/Drewry, Polly, Sukey and/or Sinthy, I
would really appreciate your help.

Jim,
I checked the book that was published in 2001 and there was only one
reference to a Pearson and that was a 20th century marriage.   I'm not aware
of any supplement that has been done.

The Hiram KELLY Family is listed in the 1820 Census of Burke County

Hiram Kelly is recorded in the 1840 Census of Cherokee County, GA and
1850 Census of Forsyth County, GA.  This seems to indicate that Hiram
moved from Habersham to Cherokee County between 1830 & 1840.  It is
possible that Hiram did not move between 1840 & 1850.  The 1850 Census
places the Kelly Families on both sides of the Cherokee/Forsyth County
line and history indicates the county line was altered between 1840 &
1850.  This suggest the probability that the county line moved, not the
Kellys.

Elizabeth McGee Kelly died in the early 1840s,  Hiram Kelly's marriage
to Malinda Anderson is recorded 16 Jul 1845 in the Lumpkin county
marriage records.  The burial site of Elizabeth Mc Gee Kelly has not
been located.

Been reading about this Methodist church in Habersham County. My
 gggfather
Hiram Kelly married Elizabeth McGee in 1813 in Burke County, NC. They
 had
four children when they moved to Habersham County about 1823 where they
 had
five more children. The last was Jesse R. Kelly born 1833 after which
 the
families Kelly and McGee began slowly moving west one county at a time
 to
Atlanta where in 1859 they jumped off to Arkansas. Hiram gave land for
Methodist meeting houses in Georgia and his youngest son (my ggfather)
became a doctor and in later life a Methodist minister.

Since we don't know where they lived in Habersham, please keep an eye
 out
for the families where Kelly and McGee crop up. We have land records
 from
every county in Georgia except Habersham.

I am guessing (bad idea I know) that since Habersham opened up in 1818
 there
were few towns in 1823 which narrows down the search (somewhat) <GRIN
Clarksville may be one there in 1823 so a possibility, but who knows?

 Thanks a bunch

FORSYTH COUNTY:

Mary Dooly (b. circa 1856) Married Hiram H Kelly in Forsyth County GA 10
Nov 1872.  Hiram was son of Andrew J Kelly & Julia E. Holbrook.
Andrew's parents were Hiram Kelly & Elizabeth McGee who were married in
Burke County North Carolina 19 Aug 1813.

My data on the family of Mary & Hiram is from the 1880 Census.  Hiram
was working in a sawmill.  I don't find any more notes for them at the
moment, but will forward your message to some who have done more
extensive research on Andrew's family.

The children I have for Hiram & Mary are: Bella born circa 1874; Julis
born Circa 1877, and Andrew J. born circa 1879.

Good to hear from you.  We are holding a reunion in Madison County
Arkansas,  June 26.  I expect we will be exchanging research information
then.  Would you like to join us?

My ggg-grandfather Hiram KELLY  moved to Habersham County between 1820 &

Thomas or William O Kelly listed in the 1830 census.

Hiram's father-in-law Patrick S McGEE and brother-in-law James P. McGEE
were also in Habersham County in 1830.

I have not locate the McGees after 1830.  Hiram KELLY had purchased land

Forsyth County in 1850.

Any leads for locating these individuals will be helpful.

HABERSHAM COUNTY, EARLIEST SETTLERS

Herbert B. Kmzey wrote a history of Habersham County, Georgia which of
particular interest to Kelly descendants.  The story is that sixty-one
families traveled in two parties from Georgia to the Nacoochee Valle, the
Habersham County.   Arriving in March of 1822, they purchased land  from
the Native Americans who were lager moved to Indian Territory.

“Early Genealogical & Historical Records       Habersham County,
Georgia”   by Herbert B. Kimzey and compiled by Nancy Kimzey Dempsy
contains a story of particular interest to Kelly descendants.
“This  history was furnished by Mrs. J. E. Wilke, Clarkesville,
Georgia.  Mrs. Richard Y. Thorpe originally made it public.  It is satd
that  a Vic Bristol was the original compile,  It is undated but from
references made in it, it was probly compiled about fifty  years ago
[1922].  Herbert B. Kinmzey published it in 1972.”

“There were sixty-one different families that came in two parties, one
just one day behind the other, using the same camp fires, one party from
Burke County, North Carolina, and one from Rutherford County, North
Carolina.  The first party led by Daniel Brown  and Edward Williams left
Burke County March 1st, and the second led by Rev. Jesse Richardson,
Abraham Littlejohn and Adam Pintner left Rutherford county about the
same time.  Travel was made more difficult by reason of the fact that
there were no roads a good part of the way and they had to cut their way
through forest; also they brought their cattle, sheep, hogs, goats, and
chickens with them.  They brought roses, some of which are still living.
I have roses of four different bushes that were brought in that party.
They also brought the Virginia and Johnson grass, etc.  Most of the
people came in on wagons, some on horseback, or driving horses and mules
and bringing their slaves with them.  They were the first white people
in this county and bought the land from the Indians an one cent an acre.”

A list of the early settlers in the area included #31 John Kelly, who
settled near Yonah Mountain.  "Rev.  Jesse Richardson and family were
the 43 family, who settled near Duke's creek,.  He had three sons, Tom,
Joseph , and John l, and one daughter who married Abraham Littlejohn.
He was a Methodist preacher and it took him a year to make his circuit.
He preached fifty-seven years and died in 1837 John L. Richardson
settled near Duke's Creek and built his house which is still standing.
Near this house the first gold was found that was discovered in Georgia
1828,"

Jesse Richardson is of interest to me, since I found Jesse Richardson
Kelly had filed a land claim in Arkansas.  I believe this is our Jesse
R. Kelley son of Hiram Kelly.  I found today that our Grandpa Hiram or
another Hiram Kelly had purchased land in Habersham County in the early
1820s, well before we believe he moved the family from North Carolina to
Georgia.  Some of the children were born in North Carolina after the
date the land was purchased.

I am in Salt Lake and I hope tomorrow to find a film with that land
purchase and print a copy for our family history collection.  I wish I
could read faster and be in more than one place at a time.  There are so
many things I want to research this week.

I wish you were all here with me.

FORSYTH AND PICKENS LAND RECORDS

Good Morning All

My husband just handed me the mail he collected yesterday. I'm excited, because there is an 8.5 x 11 envelope from John Carver. He assisted Nettie Manley with her research. I called him recently to ask his help located some data. I have misplaced of lost the copies I made

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It appears Hiram either gave or sold land to these two son-in-laws as he prepared to move to AR. John also sent me some maps so I can locate the land. I'll do that later.

There is also information from an 1850 Agriculture Census from Forsyth County. These census tell us a lot about the family life.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"In the 1850 county agriculture census Hiram owned the following: one hundred acres of improved land, one hundred acres of unimproved land, cash value of the land was $5,000 and value of farm tools and machinery was $100.

He owned two horses, three milk cows, two oxen and five other cattle. He also owned 1 sheep, forty head of swine and the value of his livestock was $305.

He harvested 60 bushel of wheat the previous year, 18 bushel of rye and 1200 bushel of corn. He raised 240 pounds of potatoes, both Irish and sweet, and made 50 pounds of butter. The value of homemade products was $32."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll not try to calculate his assests in terms of today's economy, but the following is from the 1853 Forsyth County Tax Digest. If someone calculates this into current values let me know.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1853 FORSYTH COUNTY TAX DIGEST

"According to the 1853 Forsyth county tax digest, Hiram owned 380 acres of 2nd class land.

Amount of tax on professions, dentist, polls, ect.-----------------

1853 FORSYTH COUNTY TAX DIGEST page 107 Hightower District”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are intersted in Hiram's AR land you can find the information on the BLM web site. There are also entries for Joseph and Jesse. Jesse filed on land in I think it was Carrol county. That record has his middle name.

Back to work for me. I'm due in Salt Lake no later than Sunday and I have a desk full of work to finish.

The following post may not be my Kelly family, but it is interesting because some of the names appear in my direct line of Kelly.

Joseph Kelly is a gguncle born NC about 1815, raised in Habersham County, GA; moved family 1858 to Madison County AR.

Rachael Speer, this Joseph's wife, may be related to Mary Speer, wife of Patric Stuart McGee, my ggggparents from NC, died about 1840 Cherokee County GA.

Children of Henry and Sarah Stewart Kelly:
Nancy
Rachel
Rebecca
Sarah
Samuel Henry
Jesse Marklin

Rebecca, Sarah and Jesse Marklin; My ggrandfather was Jesse R. Kelly and Rebecca and Sarah were his sisters names.

These coincidences may indicate a family relationship, but not my direct line.

I have been compiling some data from what I can find on Ancestry.com and LDS Family  Search.  I will  write a summary report this evening  and send it to everyone.  Monty is the sister of Don Kelly and Marie Privitt.  Tom Coniff in AZ( email:<azhtc@aol.com ) is also doing Kelly research and has a lot of data posted on the net.  Tom's wife is descended from the Phillips/Kelly connection.  His website is descendants of David and James Phillips.  The Phillips connect with Hiram Kelly's descendants in several generations.

Monty Ramsland lives here in CA.  I think she may have gotten the Benjamin Kelly information from Tom.  I think I sent him a message asking him about the source, but I don't recall receiving an answer.  I'll try again.  Meanwhile I am searching the net for every Benjamin Kelly in NC during the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Another site including Hiram Kelly is posted by the ex-wife of one of the descendants of Jacob Marvin Ellis &  Laura Lorene Roberts (married  18 Sep 1892 @ War Eagle).  Jacob son of James Ellis and Nancy Ellen Nelson moved his family to OK and the family migrated from the area around Durant OK  to the vicinity of Lubbock TX.

I'll call Willie early tomorrow morning. Her blood pressure is high and she has other serious health problems.  She has had some problems passing out in the past.

Willie Bohannan is my mother's first cousin.  I know her well.  (Oh, by the way, for JoNelle, Willie has had a stroke or something.  They are running some test on her.  She passed out a couple of weeks ago.  She doesn't show any outwardly signs but are trying to figure out what happened.

I have collected information from Willie, Jo Nelle, Monty, and anywhere else I could get it.  But I will admit, I have not had the chance to verify everything I have.

Let's all share what we have and see what happens.  OK???

Jesse R Kelly son of Hiram and Elizabeth (McGee) Kelly was born 29 Nov 1833 in Habersham County Georgia.  Hiram Kelly is listed in the Burke County, NC Census of 1820, Habersham County Georgia, 1830, Cherokee County, Georgia 1840, Forsyth County GA 1850, Madison County AR 1860.

Hiram Kelly married Malinda Anderson 16 July 1845.  Hiram and Malinda had three children with them at the time of the 1850 Census of Forsyth County, GA.

Other than ages and birth places given for the children, I cannot prove the Hiram listed in the pre 1850 census is my GGG Grandfather.   I have found some property records placing in him in GA and I am attempting to locate the Burke County, NC land records for Hiram Kelly.

I just sent a time line based on the results of my research to Don.  I
spent this after noon visiting with the folks living in Burke County
NC.  I still had about three pages to read when Ancestry.com shut down
to work on their servers.   James  and Ruben Kelly listed who could be
brothers to Hiram, but given the age span  and margin for error in the
entry, I cannot elimate them as the possible father of Hiram.  Alexander
is the correct age, but there is no evidence as yet to confirm that
possibility.  I cannot recall what I read that leads me to be doubtful
tha Alexander is the father.

I have been checking the catalog for the LDS Library and printing call
numbers for books and film I want to check when I get to Salt Lake in
May.

I spent most of my research time this  week researching the Thomas
Francis family, It appers that Thomas and Elizabeth Francis are th
probable parents of Elizabeth Rebecca Francis, who married Joseph
Kelly.  Joseph and "Rebecca" Kelly were living in Cherokee county GA in
1850.  I have read the online marriage indexes for Cherokee, Forsyth,
Habersham and other nearby counties and have not found a record of the
marriage.  My friend in Salt Lake has been checking as well, also with
no result.

I have a report to write tomorrow and some flyers to do.  I'm leaving
early Friday morning to drive to Santa Barbara for a meeting.   I'll
return home Sunday, but next week I need to print the handouts for my
class..

I'm headed for slumberland.  Maybe I'll dream of where to find the
Joseph Kelly marriage record.

Later,

Forsyth County:

Last summer Willie told me that Rebecca Francis Bedingfield had been name for her grandmother, Elizabeth Rebecca Francis Kelly.  I began searching shortly after my return home and found in on page 212 of the 1850 Census for  31st District of Forsyth County, GA beginning on line 64:  Thomas FRANCIS age 64 born VA, Elizabeth  age 53 born MD, Arnold  age 25, Cynthia age 23, Nancy age 21, Sarah age 14, and Susan age 11 all born in NC.

When I called Willie to tell her what I had found she was firmly conviced that this is her family based on the given names. I began searching for additional supporting evidence and the following is some of my recent findings on this line.

I hope to find this publication.  My census research leads me to believe that Elizabeth Francis, who married Joseph Kelly may be the daughter of the 1st Thomas FRANCIS listed in the census and sister of the younger Thomas Francis.  The data from the 1880 Census of Madison County AR  ([page 579 B]  indicates Liza R KELLY <1828 was born in NC, her father in VA and her Mother in MD.

Elizabeth Francis listed in the 1880 census of Hightower Forsyth County GA  [page384 B] age 83 born in MD list her parents as being born in MD.  The two unmarried daughters ( Nancy A age 41 and Sarah E age 38) residing wih Elizabeth are shown to have been born in NC, their father in VA and Mother in VA.

Page 384 A,  list Thomas M Francis, age 47, born NC, father VA, mother VA..

The 1860 Census of Cumming P.O. Forsyth County GA, page 403, begining on line 2: Thomas FRANCIS, age 73; his wife, Elizabeth age 61 Born MD, and daughters Adaline 27, Emaline, and Susan L. all born in NC. (sorry my note does not include the ages of the
younger girls)

1850 Census for  31st District of Forsyth County,GA beginning on line 64:  Thomas FRANCIS age 64 born VA, Elizabeth  age 53 born MD, Arnold  age 25, Cynthia age 23, Nancy age 21, Sarah age 14, and Susan age 11 all born in NC.

Using Ancestry.com I found Thos Francis in 1840 Census of Iredell County NC (page 208, family 6); 1830 Iredell County NC. Thomas Francis (page 28 line 4); 1820 Hertford County, NC page 202 9th from the bottom of the page) Thomas Francis.

I am continuing to search for more information to support the conclusion that Thomas and Elizabeth Francis are the parents of Elizabeth R Francis KELLY.

Hi Don,

Thanks for your response I cannot put our Kelly/Kelleys together. The positive information on the Kelleys I have is from Benjamin and Mitilda "Millie" Spearman Kelley and their children. William, David, James Turpin, Susannah, Nancy, Eleanor(my line).I have complete info on Eleanor. I also know James Turpin (J T) moved with his wife's family the Murphrees to Texas in the early 1860's.

I have lots of research on the Nelson Kelley family who moved from Stafford  and Fairfax Co. Va. to Anson Co NC. Then to Laurens Co. SC. Nelson moved on to Bedford Co Tn. between the 1800 census and the 1810 census. His son Reubin moved along with him to Laurens Co. SC he was on the 1810 Census in Anderson Co. SC and had moved to Bedford Co. TN. soon after 1810. I know Reuben had a son named Benjamin. I cannot prove the link yet.

Some of the families traveling with this Kelley family out of VA. into NC didn't stay in SC but moved on into GA. The Higginbottoms moved on to GA. So who knows all of these Kelleys may be one happy family at some point.

If any of these names are in your line I would love to work with you on research.

Again thanks for sharing your info with me. Till later Becky

What do you know about Hiram Kelly? This is strange. My mother's blood-line has the Turner's who would have come from Hambersham/Lumpkin Counties during this time period.
But, then I had an ancestor's whose second husband was a Hiram Kelly.  Maybe, we should compare information.

Per Kelly family history, Hiram Kelly had a daughter Mary S (Polly) Kelly born 1815 in Burke County, North Caroline. She was first born of Hiram Kelly and Elizabeth McGee. The family moved to Habersham County about 1825. We don't know who Mary married, but the name Turner has cropped up a few times. The Kelly family moved to Madison County, AR in 1858 and settled first near Hindsville, then the family dpread from there into Benton County by 1863 and were still there in 1934. Most now live around Springdale in Washington County.

I am not sure of the source of the dates.  I referred to the file from my former laptop and I am not sure when it was updated.  I will cross referrence with my cencus notes and the files of our AZ cousin-in-law.

There was a Kelly Family Bible.  Willie is sure she copied information from that Bible.  Those she believed had the Bible do not recall having seen it.  I think my next trip to AR I'll visit with the Bensons and any other Kelly Cousins in AR to  compare data.

The other research I requested related to Elizabeth M (Kelly) Monroe,
daughter of Elizabeth and Hiram Kelly born about 1819 in Burke County,
NC.  I was provided data indicating she is buried in Sons Chappel
Cemetery in Washington County AR.  Forsyth County, GA marriage records
her marriage 1840 to Thomas Monroe.  I believe there is also a GA
record
of a deed transfer from Hiram Kelly to Thomas Monroe.   My file
indicates this couple were the parents of nine children. born beteen
 1843 & 1863.

presented evidence that Perry D Monroe had died intestate in
Washington

Fannie K.  Monroe were named heirs-at-law.  The record also includes
the
coordinates for real property in Fayetteville and Washington County
and
additionally personal property valued at $25.

This record is not a concrete indication that this is the family of
Thomas and Elizabeth (KELLY) Monroe.  There are some sound clues, if
my

about
1848, and their youngest son's name was Price born about 1863.

Not all of the AR records are on film in the Family History Library.
I
may not be able to move forward with this family until I can make a

I would appreciate any related information you can share.  I did not

I found your  page through a search on Ancestry.com.   Naricssa SARTOR
was the first wife of my  GGG-Uncle Benjamin Kelly.  The children I have
in this family are:  Mary E. (ca 1846), Malinda (1850-1909), Hiram
Lumpkin (16 Dec 1853 - 4 Oct 1832) and Johnson (b. 1855)

Benjamin Kelly married a second time (15 Feb 1866) to Mary Jane
Chatham.  I believe I have found the second family in the 1880 Census of
Dawson County GA.  Benjamin Kelly reportedly died  at 62years of age in
Dawson County    This appears to have been second marriage for both
since the information provided by other relatives list Mary Jane's
parents as Jesse B and Susan (Edwards) Wallace.

I will be happy to share any family information from my files.

I sent blind copies of the previous message to a number of Kelly researchers and the Cherokee and Forsyth County list.

There is a good chance that the Thomas Francis I found in the census is the father of Elizabeth Rebecca  Francis Kelly.  His birthplace and that of his wife match that of the parents of Rebecca Kelly based on the 1880 census.

I have not found a Richards family as yet although I believe I have some additional information in my notes.  I cannot recall the source but I'll check it out soon.

I talked with Willie yesterday.  She had an appointment with the doctor today, because she was having some chest pains.  I'll call her tomorrow morning.  I think she goes to a doctor in Springfield for major medical issues.  She would be tired today.

I have a doctors appointment tomorrow to review the medications I am taking.   I'm also packing for the FGS Conference and working on the material for my presentation there.  Never a dull moment.

I'll try to keep everyone posted about Willie's health and any new data on the Kelly family.

I have developed the following time line for the Hiram Kelly.

1813 - Marriage bond for Hyrum Kelly and Elizabeth McGEE posted in Burke County, NC
1820 - Hiram Kelly listed in Burke County NC Census
1830 - Hiram Kelly and Patrick Steward McGee (father of Elizabeth McGee) Habersham County GA census
1840 - Hiram Kelly listed in Cherokee County GA Census
1845 - Hiram Kelly marriage to Malinda ANDERSON recorded in Lumkin County, GA marriage book
1850 - Hiram Kelly, wife Malinda, and daughters recorded in Census of  Forsyth County, GA
1860 - Hiram Kelly, filed for land patents in  Madison County AR.
1860 - Joseph Kelly, firle for land patent in Madison County, AR
1860 - Hiram Kelly, wife Malinda and daughters recorded in Madison County AR census
1860 - Joshua Ellis, son-inlaw of Hiram Kelly filed land patent in
1862 - Hiram Kelly  died, buried in Austin Cemetery, Benton County, AR
1863 - Joseph Kelly murdered by bushwhackers in Madison County AR buried Austin Cemetery, Benton County AR
1863-  Jesse Richardson Kelly  did not travel to AR with Hiram and the other family members.  It is possible he had not yet completed medical school.  One child was reportedly born in 1859 in GA and the next born 1863 in AR.  Dr Kelly did file as adminstrator for his fathers estate and later the estate of his brother. Family oral history states Dr Kelly took his family and Joseph's family to TX for a period of time after Joseph was murdered.  Court records relating to Hiram's estate also noted Jesse Kelly was not in the area.

Children of Hiram and Elizabeth (McGEE) Kelly

Forsyth county marriages were found in Forsyth County marriage Book A.  Film located in the Family History Library Salt Lake City UT.

I am currently searching for record of the marriage of Josheph and Elizabeth Rebecca (FRANCIS) Kelly.  They were shown as a family in the 1850 Census in Cherokee County.  I would also like to identify the parents of Elizabeth Rebecca, and suspect she may be the daughter of Thomas (age 64 b. VA)  and Elizabeth (age 53 b. MD) FRANCIS, who are listed in the 1850 Census for the 31st district of Forsyth County, GA [page 212 B, family 754 beginning on line 36]. The Francis children all born in NC listed with the family are: Arnold K (25); Cynthia (23); Nancy A (21); Elizabeth (17); Thomas (19);  Sarah E. (14);   and Susan C (12).

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

 Surnames: Turner, Rich, Stuart

Hiram Turner of Habersham Co. GA.  (wife Mary (Polly)  had a daughter named Nancy Minerva Turner who became the wife of George Washington Stuart of Izard Co. AR.  I think you can view the Hiram Turner family on the GA. 1850 census, in 1860 they are in Fulton Co. AR,  with additional members.
I think....Hiram's wife is Mary Rich,  they were married in Lumpkin Co. GA, 1835.   I am trying to find more about the Rich and Turner families. Kelly,  I am not sure if we have connected before or not.  Would like to hear from you...or anyone with information about these famlies.

CHEROKEE COUNTY

04/06/08

NOTE: Correct spelling is Kelly.

From the the Cherokee County Site:   Index of Cherokee County
GA Marriages

KELLEY, Jesse K.             RICHARDS, Elizabeth Ann       Feb 21, 1854
B 237

This indicates the record of the marriage will be recorded on page 237
of Cherokee County GA Marriage Book B.

This index was transcribed and then placed on the net.  Clerks spelled
names by sound and the way they believed it should be spelled.  These
two factors could account for Kelly being spelled with an extra E and
the K is very likely R and difficult to read..

Hiram Kelly is listed in the 1830 Habersham County Georgia Census on the page following following the McGee’s.  I’ll extract the census information from Ancesty.com this evening. Some of the names in this message are found on Family Search.

I found a James McGee born in Ireland with a daughter named Rebecca born in Burke County, GA.

The IGI has the 24 Feb 1825 marriage  of Anna Magee and Abel Anderson in Habersham, GA

Ancestry.com  Georgia Death Records  shows the 25 Dec 1946 death of an Abel Ancerson in Cherokee County, possibly a decendant of  Anna and Abel Anderson.

The IGI file has Hiram Kellys from 1845 through 1978.  Some I recognize, some possible, but it is going to take some serious research time to sort through.

My current project is to trace the families listed in my database in through the census.  Ancestry has not indexed all the census as yet.  I have some information in my notes and some I’ll just have to read the census.  It is only time, right, but if you have any state, county, page numbers etc. send them along to speed up the process.

I'll report later.

I keyed "Jesse Kelly" into the Google web search and got the links to the information.

A microfiche of the(I believe) Habersham county land records included an exerpt from a history of the early settlers.  The story was that two wagon trains left Burke County NC for Georgia.  The leader of one train was Richardson the other a Kelly.  Supposedly the second group was able to use the fire pits of the first group. I took the time to key the text into my computer, but I cannot find it tonight.  I think the microfiche is still in the file at the local family history center.  I'll find the fiche either here or in Salt Lake and try to photo copy the story.

It occurs to me that Jesse Kelly's middle name Richardson could have come for the surname of the leader of the wagon train.  The sound of a name is often more accurate than the spelling in those early days when  people were not as well educated.

I have not found any documentation that Joshua and Sarah (Kelly) Ellis lived in Atlanta.  They were in Cherokee County GA in 1840, and Forsyth County in 1850,   AR in 1860.

John L Richardson settled near Duke's Creek and built his house which is still standing.  Near this house the first gold was fond that was discovered in Georgia in 1828.

It is a strong possibily that Hiram and Elizabeth Kelly traveled to GA with one of those two wagon trains into Habersham county GA and the middle name of their youngest child was in honor of the Richardson who led one of those wagon trains.  During those early days words were frequently spelled  by sound,   The clerk who wrote the name on the Land Patent spelled the name as he heard it.

------------------------------------------------------------
If Jess and Elizabeth Richards were married  21 Feb 1854,  it is possible that Elizabeth may be in the 1850 census with her father and mother.  I checked the census files on  Ancestry.com for a John Richards considering that her oldest son might be named for his grandfather, but my search was not successful. I did not have time to try other given names.

Perhaps one of the other cousins has some clue to the given name of the father of Elizabeth Richards Kelly.
I have not been able to locate Hiram's widow Malinda except in the probate records.  Not all the Madison county records have been filmed by LDS and those I would like to search now are among those not available in the library.

I found some links to your pages on Google.  The information differs from my files.  This is the information I have in my file.  I'm sending blind copies to some other cousins, who can correct me if my information is incorrect.

Information provided me  Marcus L.(4 Nov 1856) and Mary Elizabeth (21 Jan 1859) were born in Georgia.  I checked the LDS 1880 Census CD's and Marcus L Kelly (age 22) born in GA was residing in Fayetteville Washington County AR. with his wife, Hester (age 21) , son Archibald (2)  and sister Henrietta (18) were born in AR.

The 1880 Census the family of J R Kelly  age 49 (GA) and his wife Elizabeth age 46 (SC) included a daughter Mary E. 19 (GA).

"History of Washington County Arkansas"  page 846, is a biography of William Hamilton Benson, who married (20 Feb 1890 [ source=Washington County Marriage Book]) Julia Elazine Kelly.  The book biography written by Joe Benson indicates  Jesse Kelly graduated from Atlanta Medical School in 1859.  I met Joe a few years ago, at that time he was an attorney in Fayetteville.

This would seem to indicate that Jesse and Elizabeth did not move to AR until late 1859 or early 1860.

Hiram and Joseph Kelly and Joshua and Sarah (Kelly) Ellis are believed to have arrived in Arkansas in 1858, and  BLM records indicate they were granted homesteads in 1860.  Jesse Richison* Kelly of Carrol County was granted a patent for 80 acres of land in Washington County in 1882.

I would appreciate any corrections to my data along with the source of the information.  I'm trying very hard to be as accurate as possible..

Austin Cemetery near Best, AR is well maintained by a cemetery committee.  My cousin and his wife were recently planing to mark their burial site in Austin Cemetery.  I am not sure if she is still treasure of the cemetery committee, but during my last visit to AR she was contacting the person who does the mowing in the cemetery.

I have not located the parents of Elizabeth Richards, although I do check from time to time to see if any possibilities surface.

Hi Jonelle--long time no contact! g Hope you are doing well.

Had a computer crash for Christmas, naturally the ONLY thing we couldn't

restore was the email! LOL I've been going nuts trying to find everyone's

address-- took me a good 10 minutes of searching online to find yours (after

looking through all my file drawers and online genealogy for it-- can't

believe it wasn't anywhere!).

Anyway, I've finally just gotten a packet of genealogy info I was promised

back in August on Benjamin Kelly's daughter Azzie Lee's family (real name

Arbellar Ruth Sarah Azalee Kelly!). Most of this was on the Thomason line,

Azzie's husband and their kids. But all of this is the research of one of

Azzie's sons-- Vernie Thomason who was born in 1903. MOST (but not all) of

what he's written I've been able to prove, or haven't had a chance yet to

prove or disprove. There is one item that's rather important that he

mentions a few times and based on his comments (he died 6 or 7 years ago),

I've tried and tried to prove this and have only found evidence that it's

very unlikely-- so what I'm saying is this guy's memory could be flawed.

Anyway, he says it twice, and the last time he makes a big point of it--

Benjamin Kelly was a DUTCHMAN. The second time he says "full blodded sic

Dutchman."

Now I've checked to see if this might have some esoteric meaning, but in the

dictionary, Dutchman indicates a person of the Netherlands, but also could

loosely refer to someone of German descent. I've checked my new book "The

Writer's Guide to Everyday Life in the 1800s" hoping for maybe some slang

use of the word Dutchman that might give a clue as to where that came from,

but the only thing Dutch in there is dutch oven. g

Have you heard of anything like that on the Kelly line? I thought we had a

letter that indicated Ben's father Hiram or grandfather was from Ireland?

Also, his information, on the same page as the "full blodded dutchman"

comment there is listed a burial at Scudder Cemetery named "Geo Wohn (?) Kel

ly April 1818 (big space) 1852" He has that squared off in a box as if to

separate it from the other info on that page (that page contains mentions of

Jesse Wallace and Sarah Edwards Wallace (Ben's wife's parents) and Mary Jane

Wallace, followed by Azzie and her husband and a listing of their children.

All along this page he has notes about the different ones-- dates, where

buried, marriage, etc. In looking at this guy's notes, he was one heckuva

tenatious genealogist! He really badgered family members to supply him with

info! g I wish I had his nerve and zeal.

Anyway, I'm curious about what you think about the Dutchman, and if you hav

a clue about this Geo Wohn Kelly.

Oh, one last thing-- you might want to update your records. My

mother-in-law died last month-- granddaughter of Azzie Lee Kelly and J.W.

Thomason via daughter Velva Thomason McLemore-- Mary Frances McLemore

Hawkins Rogers, born Feb 3 1929, died Feb 20 2000.

Between her and my grandmother dying in Jan, and before that the computer

crash-- I haven't gotten much genealogy done lately. Just starting to get a

little time in when this long-awaited package arrived.

Long lost cousin,

Rhonda

I almost think we are kin!  My people went from NC to GA or NC to TX
 then to AR--then to TX.

Anyway, on Hiram, he was listed on the 1830 census for Habersham
county.  No township was mentioned.  It was a federal census with ID #
 GA55993584

There were 4 Hiram Kellys in NC from 1840 to 1870 that were on the
census.  If it is the same Hiram, he seems to have purchased land in
Fayetteville AR on 01 Feb 1860.  there show to be three instances of
land purchase by this Hiram on that date at that location.

I had to stop last night, but I will do more looking today.  I am DAR
 regent, and today is DAR.

 Hi,
I was coincidentally updating my bibliographical files with info from the
Marietta, Georgia library and five minutes ago ran across an Edmond Kelly in
the Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby
 Gilmer Moss, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc, Baltimore, 1983. The entry is;
 Kelly, Edmond       R5840 (Nat'l Pension Claim #)
 d. 6 October 1842 (age nearly 100)
In 1775, he was in the Snow Campaign under Col. Richardson and the following
spring, he enlisted under a Lt. Taylor, Capt. Francis Boykin and Col. Thomson
for a fiftour.  He was in the battle of Sullivan's Island.  In addition, he
was at Savannah.  He volunteered for a second tour in the same unit and becam
a scout.  After the fall of Charleston, he went to North Carolina and joined
units there.  He was sent to Virginia during this nine-month tour.
Thereafter, he returned to South Carolina and was again a scout.  He was at
Gate's defeat.  Audited Account in the SC archives 4198B.

The 1800 SC census lists an Edmund Kelly in the Newberry District pg 81 males
 00201 Females 00001.

Perhaps this helps,  Ed Kelley - Georgia

Subject: [KELLEY-L] James Kelly in County Cork?

Hi, everyone.  This is for Harold Kelly, who asked about a James born in
County Cork.  I have Kellys who (I think) were originally from
Ballyhaunis,
County Mayo but who seem later to have relocated to Queenstown/Cobh in
County Cork.  With so little information, it's hard to know whether there
might be a connection, but my GG-GM, Minnie Kelly, was born in 1855 and
died in 1910 (same generation), and she had a brother named James.  The
others were John, Charles, Martin, Rosemary, Annie, Kate, and Lizzie
(Elizabeth Veronica) -- unless I'm forgetting one or two.  Minnie's full
name was Mary Ann Theresa.  Her parents were Patrick Kelly and Ellen
(Lyons) Kelly.  Minnie, Lizzie, and Kate at least were in Philadelphia by
the late 1870s/80s; Minnie married Alexander Munro, Lizzie Phillip
McDonald, and Kate Joseph Hutchinson.  I think their father, Patrick
Kelly,
had a sister named Mary; those two are said to have been raised in the
North of Ireland by a relative named Canon McGuire.  They may also have
made a stop in Canada before moving on to the U.S.

 Hope this helps -- though I don't suppose it will. :}

From: Erin8576@aol.com Subject: Info needed on William Arthur Kelly, Georgia

 Hi all....

New to the list, and looking forward to sharing info!

I'm researching my great-grandfather, William Arthur Kelly

Born 8/4/1871 or 1872, in Cartersville, Ga.  (Bartow County)

Married 1/10/1892  (recorded 1/14/1892) by Bartow County
Justice of the Peace Frank Watkins, to Annie Irene Harvey

Worked most of his adult life in the store of Sam Allen, in
 Cass Station, Georgia.

William's first memories was of growing up in a foster home,
or a home he had been hired out to, not sure which.  Remembered
a half sister, Sally, who later married Bob Wright of Atlanta.

Nothing is known of his parents.  Any help anyone could offer would
 be greatly appreciated!!

 Thanks

From: "Lyn Sherwood" Fawnette@worldnet.att.net Subject: Ida Mae KELLY NACE, Atlanta, GA/Tampa, FL
Researching my great-grandmother, Ida Mae KELLY NACE.  She was born in
Atlanta, GA 4/28/1862, parents supposedly from County Cork, Ireland.  She
had several brothers, don't know if they were younger or older.  She
married William Wiker NACE also from Atlanta, GA and they later relocated
to Tampa, FL in the early 1920's where they both lived until they passed
 away.

There is some thought that the family might have come from Pennsylvania
before they moved to Atlanta, GA. Although a family member recalls Ida
saying, "I was born in Georgia, but conceived in Ireland."

Would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.  Thanks!

JOEL KELLY - PICKENS DISTRICT SC - Hopefully we can put
some of these Joel's together....

Joel listed in Pickens District SC
1830 - one male 15-20 and one male 20-30
two females 5-10 and one 40-50.
1840 - one male under 5; one 30-40
          one female 30-40
1850 - Barbara Phillips Kelly - 50
          George Washington Kelly -14
           Marianne - 10
           Reuben - 5

Apparently Joel was born between 1800 and 1810 and died
between 1840 and 1850.

A list of some of the Kellys living near Joel
 according to the US Censuses:

1830  - James, Andrew, and Disa.
1840 - Solomon, Patrick, Andrew and Benjamine
1810 - Elisha, John, Joseph, and Reuben
1820 - Andrew, Elisha, James, John,

My Joel m. Barbara Phillips, d/o Levy Phillips (Rev. War Vet)
and had the children listed in the 1850 census.

His son George Washington Kelly (Civil War Vet)  married Sarah Ann
Elizabeth Butler, d/o of Daniel and Amelia Childers Butler, also of
Walhalla, but I think they moved across the Tugaloo River to Madison
County, GA.  After the war, George and Amelia moved to Rome, Georgia,
and then on to Falls and Limestone Counties, Texas.

I have information on most of Joel's descendents but have been unable
to find Joel's parents and have no idea where they lived prior to moving to
SC.

I would love to hear from anyone with information on this illusive family.

In response to Jennifer's post, as follows:

I am seeking info on Elias (Elisha?) Kelly and Marianne Jennie Weeks
(Meeks?). They were married, possibly in SC, because their son Marion was
born there. They had at least one son, Marion Samuel Kelly, who married
Julia V. Inman. Here's what I have so far:

Below is an outline of my KELLEY line -- my direct descendant being Joel (b.
abt. 1775), and his father has not been proved yet to be this Richard.
Considering the Joel, Samuel and SC commonalties with your line, I wondered
if you saw any further commonalties.

General Notes:Jasper, Georgia"The county seat of Pickens County was named for Sergeant

William Jasper, an American soldier of Revolutionary War fame, who died on Georgia soil.

Before the town was incorporated in 1857, it was a small Long Swamp Valley community of

pioneers. Early businesses included a lumber mill, marble plant, harness and shoe shop.

Geographically, the county was unsuited for large plantations of the type that made slave labor

I would also be interested in the Kelly connection especially with Sheffield family. my Gr-grandmother Sara Winnie Sheffield b: 3 JUL 1832 AL mar Daniel Kelly Trant, b: 28 APR 1822, Warren Co., GA. They had 13 children. Have data on all 13 .
Sara parents were Thomas Sheffield b:1803 NC, mother Nancy Bush Beasley b: 1809 NC. Also have their ancestors.
Daniel Kelly Trant father was James Trant b: 1788, Warren Co., GA .
His parents were John Trant d: Warren Co., GA 1799, whose wife Sofie was exetrx.
James Trant married Rebecca Kelly b: SC 1798. Believe her father to be Daniel Kelly born in Ireland, township unkn.
Marriage settlement signed in SC of Daniel Kelly, Jr. Married Ann Marion, Jan. 1797
Settlement signed by three members of General Francis Marion's family. Same Daniel?

My grandfather James Monroe Kelly b: 25 Jul 1862 (bros. John, Thomas & Frank, sister) orphaned, lived with his Trant cousins who had moved to Dale Co., AL. He married Mary Frances Trant, 5th child of Daniel Kelly Trant. They were cousins and is so noted in the census of 1880.
We don't know if James Trant had bro/sisters nor if Rebecca had bro/sister.
Any suggesstions appreciated.

Information about the early settlement at Savanna, Georgia.

In Georgia, beginning in the mid-1830's, a mass of Irish came in to Savannah as a direct response to work opportunities. Ill-fated canal projects and the 1830 Central of Georgia Railroad project, completed in 1843, contributed to a fifteen year expansion of the regional economy. The majority of Savannah's Irish came from only six of Ireland's thirty-two counties, Wexford, Cork, Mayo, Tipperary, Cavan and Kerry. A strong link was established between Savannah and Wexford, which provided "acquaintenance, kinship and remittances." By 1850 nearly half of the foreign-born and 55% of the Irish born were living in the middle Atlantic states; 13% of the foreign-born and 10% of the Irish-born were living in the South.

Exactly when and where did William Washington Kelly die? William Washington and Mary Chamblee Kelly had two children: William Rosea (b. 1867 in Blount Co.,AL) and Washington Truman (b. 1869 in Blount Co., AL). I would appreciate any information on any of these people, especially William Washington Kelly and Thomas Kelly.

KELLY, Hiram:

Hiram conveyed most of his land in Forsyth Co. to his sons-in-law, Theron E. Monroe and Thomas L. Monroe before he moved to Arkansas in 1857. Therefore, the Monroe brothers and families remained for the moment in Forsyth County, Georgia.

Land Records:

Oct 14, 1857: Land Deed book C, page 221, deeds and mortgages, Canton, Cherokee Co., GA. Hiram Kelly of Forsyth Co., GA to William Gilstrap of Pickens Co., S.C.; Lots 324, 325, 326, half of 327, 253 and 254, each containing 40 acres except 327 which also contained 20 acres of the east half of 327. This research done by a pr5ofessional researcher hired by Nettie Manly of Roswell, GA. He stated they were the last dates that placed Hiram Kelly in GA.

Thanks again.....Betty.

From Cousin Jonelle.

KELLY, Hiram:

Hiram born 1787 N.C.; He lived in Burke Co., NC. Recors show him later living in Forsyth, Habersham and Cherokee Counties, GA before he moved to AR.

Hiram married Elizabeth McGee (born S.C.) in Burke Co., N.C. Bible records indicated four older children born in Burke Co., NC. Younger children Benjamine, Ruth and Jesse born in GA...(Ggrandfather Jesse born Habersham Co 1833). Jesse R. attended medical school in Atlanta, practiced medicine in Texas and Arkansas.

Don Jonelle thinks that Jesse's middle name may be Richison. She found a land patent #708, Carroll County, AR, dated 3 Aug 1882, with this name. Jesse had a son John T. Kelly, born in GA. I don't have his spouse or children. Other children, Marcus born GA, Alexander?? 1858-1858??, Mary Elizabeth, GA, Hiram Alexander, AR, Sarah Rebecca, AR, Lydia Jane, AR, Julia Ellazene, AR, Edward Lee, AR, Hettie G., AR. Is there another Elizabeth Ann Richards(on). because Elizabeth Ann Richards was married to Jesse, Her father was from Iceland and Mother, Moss, from MA, according to Maries notes. So Elizabeth Ann was his mother not his wife. Since Marie refused to send me her sources, I'm stuck until I can justify this information. If you have the source, please send to me. Thanks Love Monty

Am looking for the parents of my grandfather James Monroe Kelly/Kelley. James named his oldest son Marion Franklin and there are other Franklins in our family as given names. I have two lines of Kellys, since James married his cousin Mary Frances Trant whose grandmother was Rebecca Kelly born SC. Rebecca's father was Daniel Kelly supposedly from Ireland and shows in records in SC and in Warren Co., Ga in 1805 in tax records. Both the Trant/Trent and Kelly/Kelly families were in Wilkes Co. and Warren Co. at same time. James mother supposedly was named Martha and when she died James father remarried. James had brothers Thomas, John and Frank and a sister if this passed down info is correct. James father was a gunsmith and was killed by an inebriated customer. Does this have any connection with your family?
